m the COLLEGE Physical Plant Administration Classes Organizations Features Athletics HIGH SCHOOL Early in September the entire staffs for the 1961 MIRROR were appointed, and the annual rooms be- came beehives of activity. Long hours were spent in writing and rewriting copy, editing pictures, and wast- ing time trying to locate materials. Homework went undone, and classes were missed; but finally with everyone ' s help the MIRROR was completed. The legend of the Indians ' using the waters of the Tombigbee to see their reflections was pieced together to establish the coimection between the MIRROR and Indian names used by the school. Since 1922 the staff has attempted to give a representative reflection of one year ' s activities. The aim of the 1961 edition has been to reflect Ita- wamba Junior College — its tradition, friendliness, and cooperation. Since every student has his own idea of what a yearbook should be, the MIRROR will not satisfy all. Yet, it is hoped that this edition will become a history for posterity and a treasured reflec- tion for each of you. Awards Classes Features Organizations Athletics

In Memoriam The 1961 MIRROR is dedicated to the memory of Philip A. Sheffield, a man who made Northeast Mississippi a better place in which to live because he passed this way. Mr. Sheffield was one of the few men who may be called great. Service to others was a guiding principle in his life, and in many social, civic, and religious capacities, he abundantly rendered service. Few educators have felt so keen a sense of dedication to the profession as did Mr. Shef- field. He was constantly considering and discussing ideas for improving education. To the building of Itawamba Junior College he dedicated his life and strength. During his presidency, Philip A. Sheffield ' s life and the life of IJC became acutely en- twined. Even the letters of Itawamba are reminders of some of Mr. Sheffield ' s many traits of excellent character. w M is for his integrity, a word as full of beautiful meaning as the life he lived before us. is for tact and truthfulness, two traits which he possessed in amounts that never ebbed, even in the most trying of situations. is for his ability, inherent, true, yet developed to the fullest. vUDility that was great but made greater for having been shared with others. is for his wisdom Wisdom that never faltered that possessed more than enough strength to meet the many complex problems that he faced as our President. is for adaptability, a well developed and highly utilized trait which gave Mr. Sheffield a quiet serenity that was seldom outwardly ruffled. is for motive, motive fine and pure, ever directed toward that which would pro- mote the welfare of others. is for belief, belief that he had in God and in others, especially young people. None, truly desiring an education, was ever turned away from the gates of IJC by Mr. Sheffield. is for achievement, achievement astoundingly great for a man who lived only a little more than half a century. IJC stands today as the most imposing and lasting memorial to his achievement.
