ITAWAMBA JUNIOR COLLEGE AND AGRICULTURAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT BODY I wish to congratulate the MIRROR Staff for an excellent job in editing the 1955-56 yearbook. It is a thorough picture of the activities of Itawamba Junior College and Agricultural High School. This book will be a treasured possession for former stu- dents of future years. One of our chief objectives was reached during the school year. Itawamba Junior College was recognized as being one of the leading junior colleges of the nation by being one of three junior colleges to receive Southern Association recognition. This great honor came to us largely because of a true and loyal faculty and student body. We have accomplished many objectives during the past several years. Now, I wish to issue a new challenge to you. Let us pull up our stakes and reset them for future objectives. May these future objectives be accomplished in such a way that they will cause Itawamba Junior College and Agricultural High School to achieve even greater success. Philip A. Sheffield President -rrwarr The cooperation of students, faculty members, and patrons of Itawamba Junior College — Lee, Monroe, Itawamba, and Pontotoc counties — is the backbone of the development of Itawamba Junior College. Continuation of this five-fold spirit of cooperation will enable this institution to continue to grow in size and in service to its people. Congratulations to the staff of the MIRROR of 1955-56 for this excellent publica- tion. The fond memories of the students, seen through the activities shown in this yearbook, will be a rich reward for the time and labor involved in producing this work. Sincerely yours, J. S. (iraiu ! ! ! 50 College Classes General Education Engineering Home Economics Nursing Music Business Education Industrial Education Agriculture Band Although this old class bell no longer summons IJC students to their classes, the pictures on the following pages bear witness to the fact that classes do still meet and are keeping abreast of the times. In each department students and teachers alike reflect the business-like air of serious work which goes on during work hours. Mrs. Coley and her second year FRENCH students are striving for improved pronunciation and increased facility in reading French by listening to recordings in the French language. These students in BUSINESS under the guidance of Miss Hale are learning to take dictation in shorthand, which they will later transcribe using their typewriters. 51 In the MUSIC department Mr. Deones and his Music History and Appreciation Class are listening to Dr. Curt Sachs recording of 2000 Years of Music. The Freshman students in Miss Holladay ' s English class are busy doing a timed exercise in reading; they are trying to improve their reading ability. This picture is deceiving — Mr. Crubaugh ' s Business Arithmetic class is a big one. Can you follow the explana- tion which the young lady is making? In English Literature Mrs. Timmons has a ready helper in operating the record player. This class is listening to a recording of Milton ' s Sonnet on His Blindness. Mrs. Mayhall ' s ENGINEERING students are engrossed in the explanation of a problem in Trigonometry. In the department of AGRICULTUKE Mr. Seit . and his students are using a Babcock milk tester to test milk for butter-fat content. 52 In the Department of INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION Mr. St. Clair gives individual attention to his students in Mechanical Drawing. In INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION these young men are quite pleased over their accomplishments — the book case and the tilt-top table. Mr. Thrash, the instructor, shows his pleasure too. Mr. George Davis ' students look quite serious over the problems which they discuss with him in Sociology. They will be all the better prepared to face the problems of their communities. These students in Mr. G. E. Sheffield ' s class are not only learning history but are also learning to stand before a group and express themselves; this is valuable training for the modern citizen. Mr. Curtis Ikard keeps things humming around the Band Hall. With 75 band members and 25 Indianettes to claim his attention, he doesn ' t have much time left for humming himself. Mr. G. W. Smith also keeps things humming in his depart- ment — Office Machines and Business Education Majors. 53 These well filled typing classes of Mr. I. L. Davis and Mr. Morris indicate that there are a large- number of BUSINESS EDUCATION majors at IJC. Coach Ray Thornton with the boys and Coach Othar Crawford with the girls direct physical education classes at IJC. Every college student participates in this program. The SPEECH Department under the dircclion of Mr. Carl Ross attracts many students. Who wouldn ' t benefit from training in both preparing and delivering speeches? Mr. R. L. Woods, Guidance Director and instructor in education, enjoys an orientation class with a group of Freshmen. 54 In the Biological Sciences, Mr. Argie Wilson directs the many activities of his students. Among these students are majors in NURSING and PHARMACY. A physics class with Mr. Charles Holcomb sets up an electrical apparatus to test resistance. ENGINEERING students find courses to fit their need in physics and chemistry. The Library, the service center of the campus, provides not only ample reading material for students, but a quiet, well lighted place to work under the direction of Mrs. Deaton and her student assistants. Miss Edna Hicks and her HOMEMAKING majors get together following a busy three and one- alf months in the food lab to discuss plans for Christmas Holidays. Other Freshmen under Mr. N. C. Young learn the ins and outs of college life in a course in education. 55 Club Presidents 56 The FUTURE TEACH- ERS of Itawamba Junior College not only prepare themselves but help others. They assist in or- ganizing clubs, in de- veloping recreation pro- grams for children of the community, and in reliev- ing crowded study halls and helping retarded chil- dren. These Future Teach- ers encourage and aid in improving the campus. They are big brothers and sisters to other students. They are professional minded, observing Amer- ican Education Week.
