Title 2 Table of Contents THE LEGEND OF NAWAGANTI In this land, many years ago, lived two tribes of proud and noble Indians, the Houma and the Bayou Goula. The Countryside, with its tall trees, was filled with wild animals, and provided the In- dians a perfect hunting ground. In a clearing near the Mississippi River, was a picturesque Indian Village, yet unnamed, but destined to become one of the most important landmarks in North America. The chiefs of these two tribes met to establish a boundary line between their hunting grounds. To mark this division of the two nations, they decided to erect a tall pole and paint it red. Thus ISSE TROUMA, mean- ing red stick marked the site of the Indian Campfires. As the years passed, Isse Trouma became known as lstrouma and was a landmark to all. So bountiful was the land that Indians from far and wide came to lstrouma to make a new home. The population became so great that lstrouma grew into a mighty Indian nation. Legend has it that a young brave named Nawaganti became chief of the new lstrouma Nation and ruled his people with austere dignity, stern justice, and fierce loyalty. The Indian nation loved their mighty leader and lived lives of contentment and adventure in their land of plenty. Then, suddenly one day, from out of the forest, came something that sent the Indians into tur- moil . . . white men, dressed in strange clothes. Nawaganti was alarmed, his people frightened. The white men, French explorers, liked lstrouma and wanted to bring more white men here to live. Nawaganti, realizing what the outcome would be, sent his people into a war dance to prepare for battle. Nawaganti, great warrior and chief, led his braves into battle against the white men. These men, who dared to take away everything from the lstrouma Indians, and to call the 'red stick Baton Rouge, KILLED NAWAGANTI. The Indians, then without a chief, began to turn back and return to their homes. Nawaganti dead! Nawaganti gone! His people grieved. Their great and noble chief was lost forever. Agony was in their hearts. Their souls were sick with remorse. Only the reddened pole remained to remind them of the hap- piness they once knew with Nawaganti. They remembered the peaceful days, the perfect life for the lstrouma Indians. Many days of mourning passed. The Indians began leaving their beloved lstrouma. Only one re- mained, Nawaganti, who fought and died for lstrouma. And, so the legend says, Nawaganti still walks the paths he once defended. A great school now stands in Nawaganti's land. And, 'tis said, when braves do battle and followers' hearts are true, Nawaganti rules as long ago, and lends his spirit, ever loyal, brave and true. f liiciimari, A SCHOOLS HGLQLIT OVEQI Hoi? QUIZ BOWL Quiz Bowl is a form of school spon- sored academic competition between teams representing all the high schools in the parish. Most teams have 15-20 members, with 4-6 players competing each week. While competing a moderator will ask toss-up questions similar to those of Trivial Pursuit. Each W game has a series of rounds with points 3 awarded to each team by the number 5 of correct answers. Q The parish schools are divided into 3 North and South Districts, with teams 1 having district meets every week. The top three teams in the district go to the 5 play-offs, with media coverage. Nothing has changed where that is concerned. The Indians work hard at it. The coaches work them hard in the field and expect at least passable grades in the Classroom. A :L ,,,.rw..- Q , jg-53 , Thanh Tran, a junior, is the last of our MVP's and without doubt the first in creativity. Thanh's art work is throughout the book, beginning with the beautiful Indian on the cover. Thanh produced an incredible number of Indians, each unique, and developed some beautiful designs for major sections of the book. He also drew up most of the ads. His work has helped to make this 1984- 85 yearbook a thing of class, and we simply could not have had this without him. Yr . 'I si I IAWATHA SHANNON lawatha Shannon, a senior and our editor, was dedicated from day one to producing the best book IHS has ever seen. Despite her athletic involvements, Iawatha was a steady worker, particularly after school. She contributed a lot of photography to the book as well, but most of all, she displayed the rare talent of suffering through Mrs. Poynter's explosions, swallowing her own anger, and frustrations, and continuing to work hard. I know that lawatha served as a true inspiration to others on the staff that we could not only do it, but do it well. SHARCN DODSON The Taylor Publishing Company representative, Sharon Dodson, was an invaluable aid to us. We began this project with limited knowledge and great ambitions and have ended it with increased knowledge and realized ambitions. Sharon Dodson is largely responsible for this. She not only offered instruction and encouragement, but also rolled up her sleeves and went to work to help us meet, or nearly miss, deadlines. She is truly an asset to Taylor Publishing. Features 123 BESSIE DALTON Bessie Dalton, a senior, was first of all the leading ad salesman on the staff. She possesses a real ability to handle the sales world and the near solvent condition of this book is due in a large way to her. Bessie also gave up lunches to work dur- ing lanuary and February. She possesses a fine ability to produce good work, quick- ly, under pressure. 124 Features ANDRE IOHNSON Andre johnson, a senior, was a steady worker on every Saturday and, as the football season released him, a regular afternoon worker. Andre, much like myself, felt confident that he could do anything as long as there was a 'how to manual around. And he did. Talwanga Thomas the next person. She was always will ing to help, and was with us on Satur days and afternoons. M...-nn Talwanga Thomas, a junior, was shy and overawed at first, but she rose to the occasion as our needs became more severe. Wanga helped with the photography also, and learned to crop pictures and draw layouts as well as Anita lohnston -I'-l l Anita lohnston and Shannon jones both seniors, worked together always and in actuality seemed to compliment one another's skills well enough to produce in a short time the amount of work expected. They did an outstanding PR job for the book, helped coordinate all picture- taking days, and generally were in- valuable to the process. Beyond this, the good humor both possess of- fered nice touches to the book and ,..., 7 kept us laughing instead of crying. '-N Kollin Kring Kollin Kring, a senior, was the lead photographer for the book and simply made this year's PGW WOW a reality. After all, every yearbook is essentially a picture book, and we started so late in the year that it seemed impossible to carry off this challenge. Kollin's creativity with the camera, his determination, his willingness to keep trying, gave us a good selection of pictures, and in many cases, the only selection for sections of the book. There would have been no book without him.
