LAKE CHARLES- Inexperienced, as they were, the Indians traveled to Lake Charles to begin their defense of the 1955 State Triple-A football championship. Late in the fourth quarter, it appeared that Lake Charles would sneak off with a 14-13 victory, but Don Smith, leading the offensive attack, made the final tally of the game with two seconds re- maining, thus, giving the Indians a 20-14 win. BEVERLY ESCUE, Tackle WILL BUTLER, Guard The Tribe returns to the Reservation after defeating Byrd in the State Triple- A championship game. ll Ti.. WARREN EASTON- In the first home game of the season, lstrouma was given a chance to prove themselves as a strong con- tender for the state crown. They had very little trouble in holding the Eagles of Warren Easton helpless throughout the game. lt was a fine team effort, and no one player could be singled out as the outstanding performer. CHENEVERT, Tackle LITTLE ROCK- This game will long be re- membered as the saddest per- formance of our team this season. It must be pointed out, however, that Little Rock had never beaten Baton Rouge. Since we were the only team to beat them last year, they were really determined to go home victorious. NORBERT ROY, Guard Rodney White breaks off right tackle to score against Byrd. JOHN TEMPLET, Halfback SULPHUR- After losing two straight ball games, the Istrouma team started its long climb back to the top of the state ranks. Showing the desire and spirit which led to our second straight State AAA Championship, the fired-up Indians knocked at the pay- dirt door three times. How- ever, the stubborn Sulphur line weakened only enough to let Lonnie Harper sneak over for the lone TD. NEDERLAND- Recovering from their embar- rassing defeat at the hands of Little Rock, the Indians bounced back to play a fine ball game against the powerful Texans of Nederland. Had it not been for certain bad breaks, we might have come out on top. The final score was 7-6. DON SMITH, Fullback MIKE BATCHELDER, Halfback The band plays the Alma Mater during a halftime show. BYRD- After getting back on the right track by beating Sulphur, the improving Redskins met a strong team from Byrd High School of Shreveport. lstrouma struck quickly in the first quarter for two touchdowns. The rest of the game was fought on pretty even terms, although Byrd scored once to make the final score i4-7. CATHOLlC HIGH- Following a hard-earned vic- tory over Byrd, the Indians took T the field against the weak Bears of Catholic High. It was actually no contest as the strong lstrouma outfit controlled the game at will. The victory marked the twentieth straight year that the Indians have defeated Catholic High. LEO VALENTINE, Halfback SAM GOURRIER, Guard CURTIS LIVELY End MOONIE WINSTON Tackle ' x BOGALUSA- This game was a must for the Tribe. We had to win this one to stay in the district race. It looked as if we would have to settle for a 7-7 tie, but the old phrase, you have got to want it, came to light. Lynn Amadee pitched an eighteen yard touchdown pass to Curtis Lively for the winning score. BRHS- Practically every football fan in Louisiana except the lstrouma team and supporters were sure that BRHS would crush their cross-town rivals. The tribe's defensive crew played its best game to date as they held the powerful single-wing attack of the Bulldogs to only 120 yards gained. A familiar scene before each game is the huddle of the tribe for last minute instructions. -5. 3l lv , J, 'X Wx . Q X' yi 1 my I : 5 in I TERREBONNE- The Indians lust had to win this ball game. Everything was riding on it. The Red- skins proved they could dish it out as well as take it when the chips were down. The game was a real thriller, and it wasn't until late in the fourth quarter that lstrouma could cross the goal line. VINCE BAIAMONTE, End PETE GREMI LLION, End BRHS- The powerful Bulldogs seemed sure that they would not be denied again. The Indians were a little more determined, however, and they fought their way into our Sixth District Championship in the last seven years. This was one of the best games played by the Indians this year and will long be remembered by all lstrouma fans. DONNIE HUGHES, Halfback Lynn Amadee skirts right end for a short gain against Baton Rouge High Don Smith carries around left end against Redemptorist in South Louisiana playoffs. Leo Valentine, Pete Gremillion, and Donnie Hughes hold State Championship trophy. BYRD- ing 14-7 triumph. This was the game that the boys had gone through some i8 grueling weeks and 12 tough ball games to reach. Everything in the past didn't matter now, it rested on this one game-the Big One. At the half, it looked as though the long season had been in vain, because Byrd was leading 7-0. The lead was short lived as the determined Indians came back fighting' in the second half and came from behind for a very satisfy- HOUSTON CHENEVERT, Guard REDEMPTORIST- To hear anyone else tell it, this was the game lstrouma couldn't win. Redemptorist had an un- defeated and untied ball team, and had little trouble in winning the New Orleans championship. Perhaps they were a little too sure. lt proved to be no con- test as the poised and polished Indians ran the Rams out of the Memorial Stadium.
