,..2n..g The 1954 SAMMAMISH DEDICA TION With much appreciation for his interest and guidance of our school activities, for the knowl- edge that he still is our friend, and for his supreme leadership as our former high school principal, we of the 1954 Sammamish staff would like to dedicate our publication this year to Mr. Dahl. Mr. Dahl was a guiding factor in our school for seventeen and one-half years, fourteen of which were in the capacity of principal. He was forced to retire in the middle of his cighteenth year because of illness. We have all enjoyed knowing him and work ing with him in the best interests of our school We know tl'at we have all profited by having known him and I am sure that we all look forward to the different occasions wh n we see him and talk to him again FCJREWORD The 1954 Sammamish staff with due respect to the current fads of the younger gen ration ha chosen for the theme of this year s annual Be Bop Indians In our Indian abode l'ere at dear IHS strange things have been happ ning For instance Sue is a real gone gal and Sam is real George no offense meant Th annual staff to prove tha we arent squares has decided to latch on to thi new bop talk With the aid of annual artist Ioan Massett we have carried our interpreta tion of the chosen theme through the book in a series of clever Indian caricatures We ve all been on the go putting out an annual that we tl'1nk is real hep and we hope that you ll dig 11 too T I 'M 4. 5 . Among those winning football letters were these senior boys: Ierry Brown Ierry Coop Harry Dolleman Morris Erickson Tom Howatson Ernie Meier Iack Merritt Pat Obert Ken Park Doug Refvem Tom Rutledge and Tom Ward. Basketball letter winners were Tom Rutledge Eric Erickson George Kritsonis Roger Iohnson Bob Bass and Ken Park. For our senior class officers we elected Doug Refvem as president Ernie Meier as vice- pre-ident Lillian Dolleman as secretary Ioan Massett as treasurer and Ierry Scofield and Ken Park as sergeants-at-arms. The senior play No More Homework under the direction of Miss Crelly was a big success-a happy occasion for all concerned. The cast included Bob Tanska, Arlene Hog- back, Donna Rummelin, Arline Nikko, Ianni Morgan, Charlaine Lawwill Ernie Meier, Mary Lou Lewis, Ierry Coop Leo Isotalo, Tom Grahn, Dick Moe, Dick Rutledge, Elvina Marenakos. Ioan Kelderman, Ierry Scofield, and Floy Whitney. Darlene Overton and Bev Morrell were assistant directors. -vc Being a very scl'olast1cally inclined class a number of the seniors made the Honor Roll They were Tim Ballard Ierry Brown Eric Erickson Torn Grahn George Kritsonis Dick Moe Pat Obert Gordon Thompson Marvin Willson Nancy Brunberg Geraldine Erickson Arlene Hogback Ioan Massett Ianni Morgan Bev Morrell Arline Nikko Georgia Oules Dar Overton Esther Phillips Donna Rummelin and Dolores Io Santa Torn Grahn was the valedictorian for the class of 54 and Arlene Hogback was the salu tatorian Members of the Honor Society must be high in the fields of scholarship leadership and service and many seniors belong to this organ- ization. They were Tim Ballard Arline Nikko Dolores Io Santa Tom Grahn George Kritsonis Ianni Morgan Floy Whitney Donna Rum- melin Dar Overton Arlene Hogback Ierry Brown Margie Scheda Emma Nagel Pat Obert and Mary Lou Lewis. Our class was very active in Student Council with many of our seniors being members. They were George Kritsonis Roger Iohnson Arlene Hogback Ianni Morgan Tom Grahn Pat Obert Bev Morrell Mary Lou Lewis Floy Whit- ney and Darlene Overton. The class colors were orchid and white and we chose lavender and white lilacs as the class flower. Our class motto, Forget not the failures of the past . . . use them as stepping stones to success,' is one that has proved itself many times and will continue to do so through the years. Our advisors, Miss Crelly and Mr. Treat, deserve much credit for the success of our class. Our thanks go to these people who have so willingly helped us. Our first business of the school year was electing the following class officers: Gene Davis, president: George Clark, vice-president: Nadine Mallare, treasurer: Iudy Anderson, sec- retary: Rome Bowman and Barbara Iohnson, sergeants-at-arms. Those helping to make a successful year of sinking the basketball were Elton Anderson, George Clark, Gene Davis, Cliff Isaacs, Roger Iohanson, Steve Iohnson, Frank Laine, Harold Mallare, Stan Slater, Emmett McDonald, Lorne Montreuil, David Keating, and Rome Bowman. Enthusiasm ran high for participation in the Service Club and the G.A.A. On the All-Star Twenty-Two basketball and volleyball teams was Nadine Mallare. Our snow bunnies in Ski Club were Roger Iohanson, David Keating, Dick Bingham, Gary Baugh, lean Schembs, Kay Krumbah, Vicki DeBoer, Laurene Nolet, Lynn Felton, Eliz- abeth Iohnson, and Steve Iohnson. The girls' activity group added to the class funds by their bake sale and sale of caramel apples. 1 Beverly Seil and lack Doherty were our class representatives to Pep Club, while Mary Her- lihy and George Clark were members of Stu- dent Council. IHS's first drill team was well aided by many freshman girls. Elton Anderson, George Clark, Gene Davis, Roger Fisher, Steve Iohnson, Emmett McDon- ald, Iudy Anderson, Lynn Anderson, Diane Castagno, Vickie DeBoer, Lynn Felton, Mary Herlihy, Patsy Iben, Barbara Iohnson, Neta Mathews, Elizabeth Johnson, Nadine Mallare, Vinona Miller, Laurene Nolet, Margo Shaepe, Peggy Taylor, Darlene Warren, and Nancy Wil- fong were the brain children on the first semes- ter Honor Roll. The theme of our class party on March 19 was the Bunny Hop. Two members of our class were chosen for the exchange assembly at Kirkland. Vicki De Boer was mistress of ceremonies and Sharon Brockman did an acrobatic dance. With a full and happy year behind us, we are looking forward with anticipation to the ones to come. We know Freshmen can sometimes be prob- lems and we shall always be grateful for the helping hand and patience of our teachers, the upper classmen, and especially our advisors, Mrs. Karr and Mr. Lider. FOOTBALL The Indians this year took the bitter with the sweet under the very capable guidance ot head coach lim Satterlee and assistants, Roy Peterson and Tom Taylor, in the second year of the up-and-coming KingCo Conference. This year the team won one and lost four with the victory being a decisive 32-19 win over our rivals from Mt Si. This year the team elected Tom Rutledge and Ernie Meier as their co-captains. Ernie and Jerry Coop made the All-Con- ference Team and Ierry was elected to receive the Lions' Club Inspirational Award. The mainstays from last year's team were not so numerous as they were the preceding year. The returning lettermen in the backfield were Tom Rutledge tSr.l, quarterback: Ernie Meier tSr.J, and Ken Park tSr.l, halfbacks, Frank Morgan Ur.J and Bill Freeborn tIr.l, fullbacks. Those returning for the line play were Pat Obert CSr.l at end and Tom Howatson tSr.l and Gene Hartstrom ULD, tackles. Returning to his guard spot was Ierry Coop CSr.J, and lack Merritt tSr.l resumed his position at center. Among the new lettermen in the backfield were Doug Ret- vem tSr.l, quarterback: Ierry Brown tSr.l and Dick Ianus CSophl, halfbacks: and Ervin Njos ULD, second position at fullback. In the line were many new faces. At the end positions were Morrie Erickson tSr.l, Bob Walker tIr.l, and Leon Cooke lSoph.l. At tackles were Harry Dolleman lSr.l, Bennie Lewis tIr.J, Nate Thomas tIr.l, and Terry Farrington CSophl.
