o TE.NNl6 Tmycry Thls year Newman School enJoyed a banner year ln athletlcs when the varslty teams performed a feat that has never been accompllshed before by thls school In captuxlng four Rlverslde crowns ln as may stand ln xts league for many years It IS mdeed a record to be proud of one to remember and cherlsh Let us look over thls achleyement as lt gamed momentum throughout the year Flrst ln the parade of champlons comes the football team Runnmg through thexr regular season without a loss the Greenles spllt 1n post season affalrs when they de feated Westwego 1n the flrst annual Shrlmp Bowl 48 13 and dropped a hard fought 26 6 game to the W1ldCHt3 of Re serye 1n the state playoff The two blg gest tllts durlng the regular season were w 1th NOA and Meta1r1e The plgsklnners soundly trounced the rlyal Kaydets 32 14 In the Green team s best offenslye show lng of the year and went on to defeat the Xelnoyy Jackets 12 6 Other games of the 44 year were New man 13 Slldell 0 Newman 6CONlIlg't0l1 0 Newman 32 Gonzales 6 The txtle was rolled up at HOm9COmll1g when Nlewman put away the Behrman Bees 26 0 It yy as obyxous that the cagels set then slghts on the Rxyerslde Basketball crown at the beglnmng of the season when the dubblers bleeved through the flrst round of play ln the league w 1th comparable ease The campalgn s hlghhght was the game play ed w 1th St Paul at Coylngton 111 wh1ch the Greenles yyalloped the Wolves 51 22 It was by far the best showlng that New man turned out all season Hoyv ever the second round of play dxdnt go as fast or as easlly The Greenles drew a couple of scares ln slowlng their pace agamst teams like Westwego and St Paul but the champlonshlp team came through droppmg only a non league affaxr to Sll dell on lts court by two polnts Reahzmg that thev mlght lose the champlonshlp lf they relaxed too much the drxbblers went through the play offs wxthout an error 1n the1r column They pushed Slldell aslde ln the fmal game 65 44 In the annual Coymgton Invltatlonal Tournament New man lost out 1n the flrst round to Istrouma of Baton Rouge The same story was re peated ln the state tournament when the Greenles dropped the 1n1t1al game to M a n y wh1ch 1nc1dentally contlnued through the tourney to become Loulslana State Champlon These two br1ll1ant v1ctor1es 1n R1yer slde were the reasons for the thlrd one Eyeryone knew that lf Newman was to perform the hat trlck this was to be the year The thlnclads went through their regular track schedule wlthout a mlshap but It was the b1g meet that told the tale On the day of the operetta the Greenles after quallfylng thlrteen to 'yletalrle s sey enteen took the 1949 R1yer slde track crown by 21 polnts Newman THE PIONEER IUNE 1949 1 , 1 . ,' 1 .
