The outstanding run was Pete Zhu1kie's forty yard end sweep. Ishpeming 6 - Escanaba 6 For the second straight week the Hem-atites entered the game as the underdog and came up with a tie. With Dave Bennetts stepping into the quarterback spot in place of the in- jured Fran Scalcucci, We proved difficult foes for Escanaba. Raoul Robar's 24 yard touch- down run was lshpemingfs lone score. Ishpeming 32 - Newberry 13 With Pete Zhulkie scoring 25 points and Raoul Robar adding the other TD and impres- sive yardage, Ishpeming High School defeated a young Newberry team, 32-13, at Newberry, for the first win of the season. Ishpeming 20 - Munising U A hard-charging line spearheaded by Dennis Alanko and Dominic S-arvello stopped highly rated Munising backfield. It was a great team effort as each starting back .scored once for the Hematites. Ishpeming 26 - Negaunee 0 The Hematites again outcharged the opposi- tion to ch-alk up a 26-O homecoming victory over their Twin City rivals. lim Richards and Les Larmour spearheaded a great defensive effort. Robar scored twice, and Zhulkie and Bennetts each scored once as the Hem-atltes' balanced attack moved to their third str-aight win in as many weeks. Ishpeming 0 - Marquette 39 With Marquette scoring first, lshpeming never recovered from some first half fumbles to finish on the short end of a 39-U score. Ishpeming 6 - Soo 13 lshpeming, after a disaster the week before, tried to get back on the victory trail, but were halted by -a determined Blue Devil team. Dan Christian was the Hematite standout for the evening as he scored our only touchdown and was the leading ground gainer. lshpeming U - Stambaugh U ln a mixture of rain and snow the Hematites tailed to capitalize on a third quarter scoring opportunity to end the season With its third tie. VARSITY BASKETBALL Ishpeming 49 - Manistique 50 With the exception of veteran center, Peter Misale, ta brand new starting five took the floor at Manistique. The squad kept pace with the Emeralds until the closing seconds to bow out with a one point defeat. Ishpeming 41 -- Stambarugh 33 Getting off to a shaky start, the team gained confidence in themselves to end up on top. It was a well-earned victory with the team show- ing promise for the games ahead. Ishpeming 36 - Munising 28 Our game with Munising was a low-scoring affair with the lead changing hands several times, The I-lematites came on with a final ral- ly 'to defeat the Mustangs for our second straight win. Ishpeming 48 - Iron Mountain 52 The Blue and White got off to or quick seven point lead in the opening minutes and held it for two quarters. The tall Iron Mountain team, on their home floor, finally managed to over- come the 'Blue and White 'to end up with a four point win. Ishpeming 37 - Escanaba' 38 Once again Ishpeming felt the sting of the lack of height. The squad exhibited good ball con- trol and led right down to the last five seconds when a quick free throw and field goal left them with their second straight heartbreaking defeat. Ishpeming 44 - Negaunee 32 The team got off to a good start again but this time stuck with it to come out on top with a decisive twelve point victory. Ishpeming 43 - Marquette 61 The team fell victim to a crushing eighteen point defeat against Marquette. The trick that did it for the Redmen was a full court press dur- ing the second half. Ishpeming 54 - Newberry 36 After a slow start, the Hematites finally re- covered to pull away to a comm-anding lead to win on their home floor. Ishpeming 50 - Escanaba 70 The tall Escanaba team, on their home floor, quickly took ta big lead and kept it to defeat the Blue and White by 'a twenty point margin. Ishpeming 54 - Gladstone 52 It was Ishpeming's turn to come from behind as they survived Gladstone-'s lead to come out the winners in the final minute. Ishpeming 62 - Stephenson 59 ln a thriller right down to the wire, the squad played clutch ball in the final minutes to take a close one by three points. Ishpeming 53 - Marquette 46 In a real spirited revenge from the defeat be- fore, the team moved well -against Marquette's press to win. The victory broke a two year string of Marquette victories over Ishpeming. Ishpeming 44 - Soo 49 The Hematites kept pace with the Blue Devils for three quarters until the Soo slowly pulled away in a game that was closer than the score indicates. Ishpeming 44 - Negaunee 49 The improved Negaunee Miners took revenge on our team to win a hard-fought game. Like the first one it was the usual close one between the twin cities. Ishpeming 57 - Ironwood 72 It just wasn't lshpeming's night to play basket- ball as they went down to defeat against the Red Devils. Missing their first twenty-seven shots, the team struggled back with twenty- eight points in the last quarter but it wasn't enough. Q Ishpeming 47 - Iron River 38 Both teams played on even terms until the last quarter when Ishpeming came on strong to be- come the victors. lt gave the team an even rec- ord tor the season. .DISTRICT TOURNAMENT AT NEGAUNEE , Ishpeming 61 - Hancock 55 A .:VJith'both teams starting at a slow pace in the first quarter and. fast during the second half, Ish- peming shook ,off a .last minute attack to win .the first roundfof fdistrict play. ' ' Ishpeming 48 - Negaunee 45 The Hematites overcame the jinx that Negau- nee was unbeatable on their home floor by win- ning in the last minute. lt was the Blue and White's third straight district title. REGIONAL TOURNAMENT AT NORTHERN MICHIGAN COLI.EGE FIELDHOUSE Ishpeming 56 - Escanaba 59 It was that tall Escanaba team that spelled final defeat for Ishpeming. Our team played their best ball and kept pace with them, bowing out in 'the last minute. The rebounding strength of Escanaba proved to be the big factor in their win. Fifty-five upperclassmen responded to the initial invitation of Coach C. C. Watson for the 1959-60 basketball season. Five seniors - P. Misale, C. Hosking, L. Roberts, D. Larmour, A. Pesolag five juniors-P. Zhulkie, L. Larmour, R. Robar, W. Thexton, and F. Scalcucci carried through for the season. The record for the sea- son was lU victories and 9 defeats with Ishpem- ing scoring 928 points to 924 points for the op- ponents. The team won 'the District Tournament at Ne- gaunee for the third straight year, defeating Hancock 61-55 in the first game and turning back Negaunee for the champions'hip 48-45. Ishpeming lost at the Regional tournament to a tall Escanaba team 59-56 in a game that wasn't decided until the last few seconds of the game. Peter Misale, a four-year veteran was selected to the Upper Peninsula Class B team by the U. P. UPPER PENINSULA TRACK FINALS May 23, 1959 Among a field of seventeen Class B schools lshpeming ranked seventh, once again losing to a strong Marquette team. Ishpeming went to Northern's track with eleven entries. W. Luoma was lshpeming's only standout, win- ning the high jump at 5 ft. 9114 in. I. Anderson place fourth in the 880 and R. Robar was third in the 440. The half-mile relay team placed third and I. l..aPointe was fifth in the broad jump. COUNTY RELAYS May 26, 1959 The Hematites pulled a mild upset by tak- ing first place in the annual county relay meet with 32 578 points to 28172 for Marquette and 13273 for Negaunee. Luoma was the standout again, placing first in the broad jump and tying for first in the pole vault. The medley relay team won with a time of 2:43 and the 880- yard relay team won with a time of 1:41. R. Solka was second in the broad jump. UPPER PENINSULA MEMORIAL RELAYS May 29, 1959 After adjusting team personnel due to the results of the county relays, we were hopeful of an upset. However, we won only one relay, the medley, in 2:41. Marquette was victorious as they took the remaining four relays.. Our one-mile and two-mile relay teams placed third. The quarter-mile relay team placed fifth while the 880-yard team was disqualified. W. Luoma was the only individual point-getter, taking a third in both the pole vault and the broad jump. The team scores were as follows: Marquette 54, lshpeming 28172, Negaunee 28, Escanaba 27, Newberry 26, and lron River 2. 'kBl'if9C'k This ended ,a relatively successful season for a team which was inclined to finish second. There was a total of fifteen letter winners. They were: john Anderson, David Bennetts, Gerald Corkin, Dennis Hickey, john johnson, john La- Pointe, Warren Luoma, Peter Misale, Darrell Reed, Raoul Robar, Dominic Starvello, Richard Solka, Peter Zhulkie, William Kunnari, and Michael Pontti. Solng ................,........,,,,.....,,.,,,,,,,,,,, HISTORY Every ten years for over a century and a half, the United States Census Bureau has can- vassed 'the country counting noses, delving in- to the lives of the American people, and ob- taining a considerable amount of information, both interesting and startling. The facts pre- sented tonight are not quite so extensive, for they only cover the Ishpeming High School, the senior class in particular. But we have tried to probe deeper into the lives of our comrades than the government did in order to entertain you tonight. There are 149 of us, 73 males and 76 females, and our statistics are derived from these representatives of your community. A pair of brothers and 2 pairs of sisters, includ- ing a set of identical twins, are members of this year's graduating class. In 1947, when most of us entered school, the kindergarten enrollment was 147. This year's record enrollment of 199 shows a 357, increase since we started school 12 years -ago. Slight- ly more than half of us have attended only the schools in the Ishpeming Public School System. One girl, while living on a reservation, attend- ed school with Mohawk Indian children. Com- - STATISTICS plying with 'the recent emphasis placed on scientific subjects, 52 seniors, more than V3 of the class, have met the requirements of the Science Course. Thirty-seven are graduating from the Social Science Course, 17 from the Industrial Arts, 12 from the Business Education, 7 from the Home Economics, and 24 from the General Course. The first questions on our census concern our parentage. Ten years ago 26 '70 of our parents were born in foreign countries, while this year only 570 are of foreign birth. However, some of our homes retain much of the Old World, as foreign tongues are still spoken in the homes. Four languages other than English are spoken in 42 C28CX,I of our homes. Finnish is spoken in 31 homes, followed by Italian, Swedish, and French in the remaining ll. Half of our par- ents have received high school diplomas, while another 87, have graduated from college. We have lost 1 mother and 10 fathers through death. Three homes have been broken by separation or divorce. Most of us started our lives in this area, for 847, of us were born here in Marquette Coun- ty. One senior boy is a Brooklynite by birth, while another was born in far-off South Africa. Our class reflects the economic condition of the community. Eighty per cent of our families take great pride in owning their homes. Only the Class of 1951 equals this record. Our 45 working mothers C24 full time, 21 part time1, the largest number in 9 years, have undoubt- edly been a contributing factor in purchasing homes. The mining companies which employ about half of our fathers are also responsible for some of our material possessions. Despite the fact that 7 families own no automobile, we -average more than 1112 cars per family. We ourselves own 24 cars, along with 79 bicycles, 3 motorcycles, 2 motor scooters, and 2 jeeps. One boy, whose family owns 6 cars, has no trouble getting around. Five years ago, only 30 families owned television sets, while this year only 4 families lack them. During the same period of time the average number of radios per home has risen from 2172 to 31f2. This apparent increase in wealth has been paralleled by the rise in student incomes. Al- though the number of wage-earning seniors has decreased by 107, in the last decade, the average wage has risen 40C - from 56c per hour in 1950 to 96C in 1960. This is the highest amount of which we have a record. ln spite of the increase in earnings, the amount of money spent on recreation each week has dropped to the lowest it has been in four years -52.16. This amount includes the 12 who spend nothing and the 5 who spend S10 or more. Evidently the recent recession has taught us thrift, for 457, of the class have savings ac- counts, 42'X, own government savings bonds, and 347, have Christmas Clubs. A possible reason for our low expenditures on recreation is that much of our entertainment is free. We spend approximately 3374 hours a day watching television and listening to the radio. However, 7 seniors claim they never watch TV and ll do not listen to 'the radio. Our 28 hi-fi phonographs and 10 stereos also keep us occupied. Still more of our free time is taken by the organizations outside of school to which more than half of us belong. Four-fifths of us belong to organizations and clubs within the school. Most of us perform daily chores at home, although 17 claim that they 'have no re- sponsibilities. Some of us are smart enough to get our 180 brothers and 190 sisters to fulfill some of our household jobs for us! 'The movies get some of our money that is spent for recreation. We average one movie per week, although 17 never attend. Four seniors, on the other hand, attend the movies 3 times a week regularly. A possible item in the budgets of 447, of the class is a hobby. These hobbies range from collecting china dolls to training and breaking horses. One fourth of the seniors play the piano, while an equal number have mastered some other musical instrument. The most popular pastime seems to be dating. Ninety-one per cent of the class date, and at le-ast 100 of us have gone steady at some time. One boy listed dating girls as his most unusual experience. ln spite of the fact that our parents complain that we do not spend any evenings at home, the facts show that we go rout only 3172 nights a week, on an average. One senior does not go out at all while 13 go out every night. Traveling again ranks high as a popular diversion. Sixty-five per cent have visited countries outside of the United States, with our neighbor Canada being the most popular. All but one of us have 'traveled out of the county, while 987, have gone beyond the borders of the Upper Peninsula and the same number, out of the state. Twenty-eight per cent have ridden in a plane, while 927, have journeyed in a train. Most of us actively enjoy sports-swimming being the most popular. All but 3 senixors can swim, and 22 Cl5'Z,1 learned in the school pool. Camping, fishing, and hunting rank 'high as summer sports while skiing, skating, and to- bogganing top the list in winter. Four have ridden Suicide Hill, while 26 have mastered the landing, including 2 girls. One girl has braved the landing on cardboard. Another has taken a canoe trip to Canada. The next group of figures revealed by our census concerns our health. We should be physically well protected from disease, for most of us have had smallpox vaccinations, tuberculosis and diphtheria tests, and chest X-rays. Only 1 senior has had no Salk polio shots. Since 907, have had the measles and 6570 the mumps, we hope we are immune to these. Sixty-one have undergone the removal of tonsils and 27, of appendices. As far as brok- en bones are concerned, it appears that we have had our share-15 arms, 9 fingers, 7 ankles, 7 collar bones, 7 legs, 3 wrists, 3 toes, a few ribs, a foot, a knee, and a thumb. One of the boys, a skier incidentally, 'holds 'the record for broken bones with 4 legs Cnot all at one time, of course1, several ribs, and a collar- bone. A senior girl has been so unfortunate as to break her collarbone at three separate occasions. A barrel of acid proved to be the downfall of one boy, for he fell in it and was swathed in bandages for 10 days. At least 6 of us have experienced near-drownings, while 4 have become lost while hunting. When we 'tell you that more seniors than ever before C53'X,1 wear glasses, do you won- der what the cause is-television, movies, or study? As compensation for defective eyesight, we have 10 perfect sets of teeth, the best rec- ord to date. Concurring with the popular trend, ll C7 7,1 have worn braces to straighten their teeth. Nearly 175 of the seniors have been blessed with naturally curly hair. Four- teen of us Cnearly one in ten1 are left-handed. Now we inspect the section on the census sheet concerning employment. Most of us have worked at one time or other, for among us are 67 newspaper deliverers, 31 clerks, a number of babysitters, and scores of odd-job- bers. Three-fifths have had the opportunity of speaking from the stage of the school audi- torium. One sixth have participated in the 'high school forensic program. A third have appear- ed on radio or television. All but 2 graduates have taken advantage of the driver training course to obtain their licenses. We have not neglected our spiritual education, for more than 314 of the class attend church regularly, although 6 do not attend at all. ln addition 44 '70 take an active part in religious organiza- tions of the churches. As a group, we repre- sent the congregations of l3 churches in the area. You will be aware of our indecision when you realize that although ll5 seniors plan to enter institutions of higher learning, only half of that number have chosen a definite career. However, if the 787, of the class that plans to enter college, trade school, business school, or nurses' training do graduate from these, this will show an increase of 50072 over the post- high school graduations of our parents. Thirty- two boys and l girl plan to enlist in the armed forces, with the Navy and the Air Force being the most popular. When another decade has passed and the official government counters again come our way, we will naturally be in altogether differ- ent situations. lf the future can be predicted by looking into the past, it can safely be sur- mised that most of 'the class will b-e successful in their lives. -Kay Martinen GIFTATORY - PROPHECY SETTING: A small drive-in stand is pushed on stage from each side. During the introduction the waitresses take their places. CAST: I-anice Bjorne LaVerne Lynn Kathleen DeRoche Evelyn Ojanen Carol Isotalo Ioan Sundberg Kay Luostari INTRODUCTION The Drive-in stands that are here displayed Resemble none that have yet been made, To stand along a thoroughfare And serve the people passing there. lt seems far fetched we'll all concede, To so obtain an important deed, Or ticket to some romantic spot And contract for a job long sought. To come here for a certain tome Or letter from a girl back home lmpresses you as being strange, The product of a mind deranged. Our imaginations may have strayed, ln dreaming up this form of trade, But if the drive-in fad in the world expands, We may all drive 'in for our jobs and lands. Now if such a thing should come to pass, What would be bought here for our class?
