'Neath heav'ns high dome of azure blue, Thou art thyself as firm and true, Surrounded by the hills so old, Whose iron hearts are strong and bold. To thee our people turn with pride. In thee their love and hopes abide, Thy sons and daughters do thee bless, Thy teachings mould a life's success. Then let us haste and garlands rare, Wreathe 'round our High School ever fair. Superior's mighty deeps are blue, And Northern skies are that fair hue, Our color this - - it tells of might Of love of truth and love of right, Long life and health and happy hours, God grant thee, Alma Mater ours. The powerful Emeralds, who were to go unde- feated for the season, had no trouble in winning by a big score. ISHPEMING 0 - IRON MOUNTAIN 21 In the second game Ishpeming played host to Iron Mountain. The Mountaineers, seeking re- venge for three previous consecutive defeats, played hands-up ball in handling the Hematites. It was their second trimming of the year. ISHPEMING 12 - SOO 18 After two shutouts, Ishpeming traveled to the Soo with high hopes. The Hematites started strong by scoring two touchdowns in the first half to take a 12-0 lead. Robar scored both touchdowns on two and five yard runs. Ishpeming gave the Blue Devils two touchdowns, one on a fumble and the other on a blocked punt, and finally went down to defeat. 76 ISHPEMING 6 - MARQUETTE 14 ln the fourth game of the year Ishpeming traveled to Marquette to play their arch rivals. The Hematites were stronger defensively in this game, limiting the opponents to two touchdowns, but they could only score one themselves, and so went down to their fourth defeat. Duane Palo- maki scored Ishpem1i1g's touchdown on a three- yard run. ISHPEMING 7 - NEGAUNEE 26 In the next game Ishpeming played host to its twin city rivals, the powerful Negaunee Miners. The Hematites took a quick 7-O lead on a fifty-yard pass play from Scalcucci to Schultz. The Miners started to roll with one touchdown in the first half and three in the second half to gain an easy victory. ISHPEMING 13 - STEPHENSON 19 Ishpeming traveled to Stephenson for its last game on the road. The Hematites opened the game by marching to a touchdown early in the first half, with Peter Zhulkie scoring on a one-yard plunge. It was 7-6 in favor of Stephen- son at half time. The Hematites scored again on a fourteen-yard run by Robar, but could not stop the opponent's passes, so they were once again edged out. ISHPEMING 13 - GLADSTONE 7 Ishpeming played host to the Gladstone Braves in the seventh game of the season, and were determ-ined to get a victory. The first half of the game was all defense, as neither team could score. The Hematites took the ball to be- gin the second half and marched the length of the field to make it 6--0. Robar scored on a two- yard plunge. Later in the half, Dave Schultz sprang loose on a fifty-eight yard tun to make it 13-0. The game ended 13-7 to give the Hema- tites their first victory. The main factor in Ish- peming's tough defense was Captain John La- Pointe, who made a majority of the tackles. ISHPEMING 13 - STAMBAUGH 27 ' In the Homecoming game Ishpeming played host to the Stambaugh' Hilltoppers. As usual, the Hematites started strong by scoring twice, but a leaky defense allowed Stambaugh to score four times, and the Blue and White were defeated in the last game of the season. The Hematites compiled a 1-7 record for the season. Tackle John LaPointe was voted to the Great Lakes Conference first team, and half- back Dave Schultz received honorable mention. LaPointe was on the Upper Peninsula second team, with Schultz receiving honorable mention. HISTORY - STATISTICS The composition of the human body has al- ways puzzled the scholars of the world. There have been those who believed that little boys are made of frogs and snails, and puppy-dogs' tails, while little girls were made of sugar and spice and all that's nice. Now we are aware that each individual is a complex mechan- ism, not only of flesh and bones, but also of various characteristics, instincts, and emotions. Tonight, for your entertainment, we should like to anatomize ourselves - to take ourselves apart, figuratively speaking, for your inspection, as it were. Proceeding along scientific lines, then, we must first delve into our origins. We are descend- ed from many nationalities, with the English strain predominating for the first time in eight years. The Finnish, French, and Swedish fol- low closely, while the remaining rank in this order: Irish, ltalian, German, Norwegian, Scotch, Polish, Dutch, Austrian, Czechoslovakian, Danish, and South African. Only fourteen of our parents were born in foreign countries, these countries are Finland, Italy, Sweden, and South Africa. One hundred forty of our parents were born in the city of lshpeming. The foreign lan- guages of our parents are spoken in 32 homes, but only 19 seniors speak their parents' native tongue. Since mining is the chief industry in our community, it is natural that that is where a large proportion of our fathers find their employ- ment. This year about 5078 are connected in some way with mining, while last year there were 647. Our mothers also are wage earners with 24 C1975 employed at full-time jobs, and 12 C970 working part time. One hundred fifteen C47 70 of our parents have received high school diplomas, but only 20 C870 are college grad- uates. In spite of the high divorce rate in our country, serious marital troubles have not touch- ed our class, for there is only one home affec- ted by divorce. Although our mothers are all living, we are unfortunate in the loss of 13 fathers. We can boast - or complain, as the case may be - of having 178 brothers and 174 sisters. Nine seniors are an only child. One senior boy has no brothers, but has 5 sisters to wait on him at home. Our two largest families have a total of 30 children, 13 girls and 17 boys. Two families have double pride as well as expense this year, as both have two graduates. About two-thirds C6370 of us claim Ishpem- ing as our birthplace, and one was born in the far-off continent of South Africa. Fifty-seven per cent have attended only the Ishpeming Public Schools. As a group, we began our formal educa- tion in 1946, when 103 of us were enrolled in kindergarten. The group now numbers 130 - 65 girls and 65 boys. We are graduating in a year which shows the highest high school enrollment in the history of the school, 725. The total school enrollment is 1914. School buses trans- port 175 pupils to the Ishpeming Schools each day, 22 of whom are seniors. Our medical history reveals that we resemble previous graduating classes. We have had the usual shots and tests for polio, tuberculosis, smallpox, and diphtheria, and many have had chest X-Rays. Thirty families have received re- pair bills for the breakage of 1 toe, 1 foot, 5 ankles, 3 legs, ribs, 4 collar bones, 5 arms, 9 wrists, 1 hand, 4 fingers, and 2 noses. Seventy members of the class have had operations, in- cluding 14 appendectomies, and 45 tonsillecto- mies, and one senior girl has completely re- covered from polio. All of this would indicate the need for insurance of some type. Forty-two per cent of the class, a slight decrease from the last two years, are enrolled in the school accid- ent plan, which was started in 1955, and 907: are covered by life insurance. As a result of further analysis, we realize that we are not all perfect specimens of human- ity. Fifty C3970 of us find it necessary to wear glasses, and 7 have at least one false tooth, but four seniors can be proud of perfect sets of teeth. Due to the recent emphasis on straight teeth, 9 have worn braces at one time or another, the highest number of any class up to the pres- ent time. We do comply with the authorities on health who recommend at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Our average is 9, although some parents may question this! Of course, these figures do not include weekends! Since we have not yet reached the stage when we object to telling our age, we can re- veal to you that we range from 17 years, 4 months, and 7 days to 19 years, 10 months, and 29 days, but the average age is 18. Although the average weight is 141 pounds, the two lightest seniors of 92 pounds each, would not balance the heaviest of 240 pounds on a teeter totter. In height we range from 4 ft. 11 in. to 6 ft. 4 in. All of us have one trait in common - the urge to be doing something or going some place. There are more than 20 school organizations in which we take active part, although it seems strange that 11 seniors could not find the time or interest to join any of these worthwhile activi- ties. Half the class C4970 have had the exper- ience of speaking from this stage, 41 C3270 have participated in a broadcast over WJPD, ll C 970 have appeared on WDMJ-TV, and 13 C 1071 on WBAY-TV. To our everlasting regret none of us appeared in the movie which was filmed in our community! Although our school activities absorbed most of our time, 73 C5670 participated in such out- side organizations as Job's Daughters, De Mo- lay, Scouts, Drum and Bugle Corps, Bowling Team, Ishpeming City Band, etc. Eighty-five per cent, the highest number in 13 years, attend one of the 14 local churches regularly, and we are members of 10 different church organizations. Over one half the class spends an average of 3 or 4 nights out a week, including 1 night in the theater, but 17 C 1370 go out every night of the week. All but 7 of us have attended the Ishpem- ing Youth Center, while two-thirds C6870 attend regularly. Eleven have never gone to a school party and 60 have attended an Ishpeming High School prom. The most popular phase of our social life is dating, as 877: of us date. Sixty-four per cent believe in steady dating, and an almost equal number practice it. We apparently know that our bodies need recreation in order to keep the human mechanism in working order, for, as a class, we participate in various types of recreation. Swimming heads the list and we are proud that every member of the class can swim. Only the class of 1957 equals our record. Twenty-one per cent of us learned here in the pool. Camping is our second choice, and movies, comedies preferred, ranks third. One senior girl has won the distinction of being a semi-finalist in the Women's Upper Pen- insula Golf Tournament. Skiing is a popular sport during the winter season, and 5 seniors have ridden Suicide Hill, while 15 claim they have mastered the landing. Three-quarters C 7770 use the Winter Sports Area. Even though we are engaged in many out- door activities, 50 C3870 of us have devel- oped hobbies, which, we are told, are so nec- essary for our retirement years! These hobbies include studying astronomy, collecting empty cartridges, carving plastics, and making model airplanes. Our interests and talents along music- al lines have not been neglected, because 207: can play the piano, and 387: play one or more of 15 different instruments, the clarinet being the most popular. Although our time is limited, we do not neglect our 103 pets, and one senior girl is kept very busy taking care of a dog, a cat, a chipmunk, and some goldfish! We thrive on thrills and excitement! Most of us have had unusual experiences on various trips with different organizations such as church or scout groups. One girl has stayed at the Gov- ernor's mansion on Mackinac Island, 2 senior boys hitch-hiked to California. Seven should have carried compasses, since they tell of being lost in Milwaukee, in Marshall Fields in Chicago, and you guessed it, in the woods. One senior boy has learned the hard way that pencils are to be kept in the hand. He still remembers vividly being rushed to a doctor to have a pencil eraser removed from his ear! Although as a class we are not especially air-minded since only 137: have taken a trip by air, we hold the long distance record - a senior boy flew from South Africa to the United States. Fifteen per cent of the class, however, have been up in a plane. That we have traveled is obvious because all but 2 or 3 of us have been out of the state of Michigan, nearly half of the class has visited Canada, and 5 have been in Mexico. It is interesting to note that 1276 of the class have never ridden in a train. The senior boy who boasts that he has traveled in all of the 48 states now has 2 more states to visit. Like other young Americans, we are ambit- ious and anxious to earn our share of the world's goods. One half of us C5070 hold part-time jobs. About a third C307?0 of the class have clerked at some time or another and 4677 C8 of whom are girlsl have delivered papers. Our jobs are varied, with clerking and baby-sitting rank- ing first and second. Our wages range from 5.24 to 52.50 an hour, or an average of 5.89 an hour. This shows an increase of 91 over last year, and is the highest wage of which we have a record. We also have another kind of work - the tasks we do at home without pay. Ninety-two per cent of the class have daily chores at home, which include tending the furnace, feeding the pets, dusting, and baking. Several boys keep their rooms cleaned and help with the dishes, but 10 boys and 1 girl do not share in the work of the home. One senior girl has the back-break- ing task of stacking the dishes in the dish wash- erl Although we earn more than any previous class, we also spend more on recreation. If our members have been accurate on their question- naires, we spend the highest weekly average of any class, 52.98. The reason for this we leave to you parents to ponder over. The amounts spent range from nothing to S20.00. One senior spends as much as S20 .00, two spend S15 each, and one spends S12 a week. The rest of our money is placed in savings. Forty-five C3570 of us have Christmas Clubs, 57 C4470 Savings Accounts, and 58 C 4570 own Savings Bonds. Three-fourths C7670 of our families own their own homes, and one-third C3211 have camps. In these homes there are 381 radios and 129 television sets. At camp we have 34 radios and 8 television sets, making a total of 415 radios and 137 TV's. Six years ago only one senior owned a TVQ today there is only one senior who does not. Watching television con- sumes an average of 25 hours a day, and listen- ing to radio, 17: hours. In our spare time we en- joy the 89 different newspapers and magazines found in our homes. Two years ago the class had only 63 from which to choose. Of the 127 seniors licensed to drive C 113 of whom took the I. H. S. Driver Training Courseb 114 of us are permitted to drive the 201 automo- biles owned by our parents. One senior girl has her choice of driving any one of the 4 cars in her family. Only 5 families are without a car. Not to be outdone by our parents, we ourselves own 76 bicycles, 30 cars, 13 motorboats, 7 jeeps, and 3 motorcycles. In the past four years, the number of bicycles owned by seniors has de- creased, while the number of cars and jeeps has increased each year. Some educators believe there might be a correlation between grades in school and driving cars to school. A recent sur- vey in a western high school showed no A stu- dents driving cars to school, 1576 B, 4176 of the C's, 7171 of the D's, and 8376 of the E students. About 18 or 20 of us drive cars to school, but we assure you we have made no attempt to classify them! Since we entered our teens we have been preparing for our later life by trying to determine what vocation to follow. Up to the present, the class has pursued work along the following lines: 37 are being graduated from the Science Course, 26 from the History and Social Science, 18 from the Business Education, 17 from the Industrial Arts, and 6 from the Home Economics. The re- maining 26, having changed their courses for various reasons, will be graduated from the Gen- eral Course. As we turn toward the future, we find that over three-fourths of the class are planning to further their education in universities, colleges, trade schools, business schools, and nursing schools. About half the class have decided on a definite vocation. Our community will be pleased to know that 15 members of our group have cho- sen teaching as a career, while nursing and clerical work rank as second and third choices. Forty-one senior boys are planning to enlist in the Armed Forces, and the Air Force heads the list as to choice. One of our number has already spent a few months in the Army. This concludes the dissection of ourselves as individuals and as a class. With the wave of a magic wand we shall quickly re-assemble all of the composite parts so that you may again view us as whole individuals. As you leave this evening we hope that you will be able to look upon us as one hundred thirty distinctly different personalities. There are no two of us alike, but each, in his own way, has ideals, fears, desires, and ambitions. Each of us in his own way is looking to the future for success and happiness. - Zoe Pietro GIFTATORY - PROPHECY Timer The Past, The Present, The Future.
