A dvisor , AROUND THE woain The Class of Nineteen Fifty-Eight, Has gathered here to say adieu, to our dear white and blue. Tonight with hearts both sad and gay We say farewell to friends so true as we start on our way. The beacon light will ever glow As now we face the world ahead and into lite we go, And though we may go all around the world, We won't forget our higlrrschool days. So now let's join in one accord, And give our thanks to all who helped us gain this great reward, We'll not forget the prom, the teams, Our voices joined, in chorus gay, and our own senior play. The beacon light will ever glow As now we face the world ahead and into life we go, And though we may go all around the world, We won't forget our high school days. -Roger Ashley Valedictorian Iohn Deccxire Scxlutatoricm Iohn Carter 14 DOUGLAS DALE FRANCES HELEN MARTHA LUCILLE ROBERT PAUL ANDERSON ANDERSON ANDERSON ANTTILA Doug F1'an'a Bubbles Bob General Business Education Science Industrial Arts Allied Youth 1, 2.3 Annual Allied Youth 1, 2, 3, 43 An- Band 1, Christmas Play 3, Board 1, 2, 3, 43 Commercial nual Board 43 Baccalaureate Hi-Y 4, Prom Committee 3, Club 3, 41 Driver Training 3, Chorus 3, 41 Commercial Club Senior Class Play 4, Service French Club 4, Prom Commit- 3. 43 Driver Training 4. FOOTBALL Ishpeming 32 - Mcrnistique 13 The Ishpeming Hematites opened their best season in eighteen years, with a 32-13 victory over Manistique. Bob Wills and Duane King each scored two touchdowns. On a running pass Wil s threw to Peter Misale who went 27 yards for the last touchdown of the game. Ishpeming 19 - Iron Mountain 13 The l-lematites then traveled to lron Moun- tain with high hopes of winning, They tallied their 19-13 victory with the scoring of Wills and King, who were greatly helped by the de- fensive and offensive play of Dale Ruohornaki. Ishpeming 28 - Soo 19 The Soo Blue Devils came to lshpeming only to be defeated by the Hernatites. Wills, with the help of a great team effort, scored all the touchdowns. Ishpeming 19 - Marquette 21 The only black mark on the Hematites rec- ord came when they lost their first and only game to the Marquette Bedmen. Wills started the scoring with a seventy-yard run, From then on Marquette matched the Hematitos touchdown for touchdown. Two more touch- downs, one by Wills, and one by Westwater aave lshpeming a 19-14 lead in the last quar- ter. In the last minutes Marquotte scored and edged the l-lematites by two points. Ishpeming 15 - Negaunee 13 Because of sickness and injuries the Hema- tites had to p'ay a hard fighting game when they met their tradtlonal riva's at Negaunee. The Miners held a 13-7 lead at the end of the second quarter. Wills and Westwater did the scoring for the l-lematites. Gardner Bess tackled a Negaunee halfback, on an outstand- ing defensive play, for a safety which proved to be the winning margin. Ishpeming 12 - Stephenson 6 Ishpeming, with the hopes of avenging last year's loss, met Stephenson on our field. Wills did all of the Hematites' scoring, one touch- down being set up by ot beautifully intercepted pass and run back by Iohn Decaire. The f-lematites gained possession of the ball in the last quarter and in ll minutes made a 92 yard march before the game ended. Ishpeming 34 - Gladstone Z0 The l-lematites traveled to Gladstone to meet the Braves on Marb'e Field. IQm Westwater was the standout of the day, scoring 3 of the 5 Ishpeming touchdowns. Ho made a dazzling display of broken field running when he ciimaxed the day with a 99 yard run after in- tercepting a pass. Ishpeming 7 - Stambczugh 7 A tie was the result of a hard fought game, as the Hematites deadlocked with the Hilt- toppers. With their passing working ex- ceptionally well, the l-lematltes marched 79 yards for their only touchdown. The Hematites compiled a 6-l-l record, the best since l939. Ishpeming 64 - Iron Mountain 46 Getting off to a slow start, the Hematites were behind at the first quarter mark, but Bob Wills and Pete Misale found the range to lead the team to its second victory. Ishpeming 64 - Mufnising 47 A good Munising team was no match for the Hematites as Coach C. C. Watson used. all 15 players in the game. Ishpeming 43 - Esccmaba 40 Having a cold night, the Hematites managed to squeak past a good Eskymo squad for its fourth straight victory. Ishpeming 57 - Negaunee 49 Outshooting and outplaying their opponents the team won over their arch rivals from Ne- gaunee for the fifth straight of the season. Ishpeming 62 - Marquette 57 Getting even for the two defeats the past year, the Hematites won a close hard-fought game from the Redmen. Ishpeming 68 - Newberry 50 Completely outclassing the Indians, the Hema- tites made it seven straight victories. Ishpeming 73 - Escanabc: 62 ln a game that both teams were rated an even chance, the Hematites played superior ball to come out on the long end of the score. The game was nip and tuck until the last few min- utes when the Hematites pulled away. Ishpeming 57 - Gladstone 52 Behind with three minutes to play, the Hema- tites managed to come out on the top, thanks to the sharp-shooting of senior Bob Wills who had 26 points. Ishpeming 62 - Stephenson 43 Though playing a taller team, the Hematites outclassed their opponents to win by a large margin. All 15 players were ufsed in this one. Ishpeming 67 - Marquette 57 Making it eleven straight victories, and two in a row over the Bedmen, the Blue and White outshot and outplayed their foes in the final period to win. Ishpeming 72 - Hancock 63 The Bulldogs were all fired up for this game but the .red-hot Hematites managed to acquire their twelfth straight victory. Ishpeming 66 -- Soo 57 Sportswriters called it the game of the year. Undefeated Soo tll-Ol and undefeated Ishpem- ing C12-Ol to decide which was the better team, Though spotting their foes much in height, the Hematites' balanced attack was too much for the Blue Devils as the Blu-e and White cinched the Great Lakes 'Conference title. Ishpeming 41 - Negcxunee 45 Making use of good ball-control and an ex- cellent detense, the Miners won a prize victory over the Hematites to end a winning streak of 13 games. Ishpeming 70 - Ironwood 49 Still smarting from the loss to Negaunee, the Blue and White completely outclassed Ironwood to get back in the win column. Ishpeming 53 - Iron River 57 A red-hot Iron River team was too much for the cold Hematites. Nothing went right as the team ended the regular season with a loss. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT Ishpeming 78 - Hancock 68 Remembering a near victory earlier in the season, the Bulldogs tried their best but a well- balancod Hematite attack again proved to be the difference. Ishpeming 80 - Calumet 60 In a game that was nip and tuck until the last four minutes when the Hematites ran rough- shod over the Copper Kings, Ishpeming reigned as District Champions for the 1957-58 season. The team as a whole hit 5434, and Bob Wills hit 74 744 of his field goals attempts while garner- inng 32 points. REGIONAL TOURNAMENT Ishpeming 66 -- Esccmaba Holy Name 53 Though a much colder team than they were in Negaunee, 'the Hematites were good enough to beat a tall Crusader squad to qualify for the Regional finals. The Hematites iced the game in the last few minutes. Dale Buohomaki scored 2l points. Ishpeming 52 - Marquette 54 lt was a heart-breaker for the Hematite fol- lowers as the Redmen gained revenge for two regular season defeats by downing the Blue and White 54 to 52 to reign as the U. P. Champions. lshpeming was not hitting from out and an ex- cellent Marquette defense did not allow many :lose shots at the basket. The Redmen led all through the second half although the Hematites battled to within one point they could not gain the lead' -Iohn Decaire BASKETBALL B TEAM Ishpeming Muniising Ishpeming Eseanaba ...... .......... 3 9 lshpeming Escanaba Ishpeming Negaunee ...... .......... 53 Ishpeming Marquette Ishpeming Marquette .... .......... 60 Ishpeming Negaunee Iishpemling Negaunee .. .......... 53 Ishpeming Marquette Ishpeming Marquette .... .,........ 68 FRESHLIAN TEAM Ishpeming ,,.,..,, ................,. 7 2 Marquette ......... ............. . .19 Ishpeming ..,, ...........,.. 6 2 Baraga CMqlt.J ..... ........... 33 Ishpeming , ,..,................................................. 44 Negaurlee ................ ........................................ 4 3 BASKETBALL B TEAM L. to R.: Row I-J. The play, A Full House, was a three-act light comedy written by Fred lack- son. Ned Pembroke, a young felow desperately in love with Daphne Charters, sends his lawyer friend, George Howell, on a trip to recover the love letters he has written to Vera Vernon, a showgirl. On this trip Howell is involved in a train wreck and accidentally exchanges grips with a burglar, Nicholas King. While Howell is away, his wife Ottily re- ceives visitors from Yonkers: Miss Winnecker, her aunt, and her sister Daphne. Parks, the English butler, informs them of the Boston robbery in which Mrs. Pernbroke's ruby neckf lace was stolen. The plot becomes more involved when the appearance of the stolen jewels in the young 1awyer's grip brings the police force on the scene. The situation becomes quite humorous as everyone is permitted to enter the apart- ment, but no one is allowed to leave. Soon there is a full house. Mrs. Fleming, the owner of the apartment, is outraged at the presence of the police force and threatens to turn George and Ottily out of the apartment. The burglar, cleverly disguised as a de- tective, manages to obtain the thousand- dollar reward by returning the jewels which he himself had really stolen, and then makes a very graceful exit. All this time, Susie, the half-witted maid who don't know nothing, really knows some- thing. She and Parks, the ever-present Eng- lish butler, are an excellent pair in helplng to accentuate the humor throughout the play. STATISTICS In the words of a well-known showman, It's getting to be that time again, for the c'ass statistician to entertain, inform, astound, and confuse you with a maze of figures. It has been said that facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable. With this in mind, we shall try to untangle this maze to present a picture of the graduating seniors. We are descended from fourteen nationali- ties, the leading ones of which are the Finnsh, English, French, and Swedish. This pattern has been repeated for many years. While 227 of our parents were born in the United States and 115 within the boundaries of Michigan, ll 15703, the lowest nulmber ever, are of foreign birth. These foreign countries inc'ude Finland, Italy, Sweden, Isle of Man, and England. The parents of 36 students are of the same national- ity. ln 3170 of our homes a foreign language is spoken, and 20 '70 of us, an increase over last year, can join in the conversation. Forty-six per cent of our parents have re- ceived high school diplomas, and 2270, the highest percentage ever recorded, are gradu- atcs of colleges and universities. We have been affected by the loss of one mother and twelve fathers, while four homes have ex- perienced separation and five, divorce. The number of mothers employed at this time is 3570, and this number has been sur- passed only 'by the class of 1952. ln the em- ployment of our fathers our class has the larg- est number-64 '70, working for the mining com- panies. After this study of our backgrounds, we shall now relate some facts about ourselves. We find that 77 340 of us were born in Ishpem- ing, and 557, are products of the Ishpeming Public Schools. The 119 seniors, 62 girls and 57 boys, comprise 1870 of the total high school enrollment. Twenty-two of us have traveled to and from school each day this year by bus, and we suspect that a large number besides the bus students use some means of trans- portation other than walking. As was the case last year, our average age is 18 years, but the baby of the class is 17 years, 6 months, and 8 days old. We shou'd like to wish a happy birthday to two seniors who are celebrating their l8th birthdays this week. A typical member of our class would have blue eyes and brown hair. Our average weight is 137 pounds, but the two extremes are repre- sented by the largest boy who weighs 230 pounds and the lightest girl who weighs only 90 pounds. Of the 25 seniors blessed with naturally curly hair, 17 are girls. Fifty-two members of our class wear glasses. Six seniors have perfect sets of teeth, 5 have at least one false tooth, and 4 have worn braces at one time or another. Fourteen are left-handed, and 2 are ambidextrous. Although our records of health show a similarity to other classes, the advent of the Asian flu may account for the fact that the sen- iors were absent from school a total of 544 days during the first three quarters of this year. It is fortunate that 627, fthe smallest number of any classl are enrolled in the school accident plan and that 92 '70 are covered by life insurance, for we have had our share of broken bones and operations. Ten seniors have col- lected on the school accident plan. Our 36 bone fractures include: 9 collar bones, 8 arms, 5 wrists, 4 legs, 3 fingers, 2 noses, 2 toes, 1 shoulder, l jaw, and 1 ankle. Sixty-one mem- bers of our class have had operations, includ- ing 34 tonsillectomies and 19 appendectomies. We have had the usual shots for polio, tuber- culosis, smallpox, and diptheriag and many of us have had chest X-rays. All but 4 seniors have taken part in the many school organizations and activities. One senior girl has listed 25 activities in which she participated during 4 years of high school. An- other has already spent the equivalent of 16 years in club work, and one of our athletes has had 16 years of experience in sports duir- ing his high school career. To be able to speak with ease before the public requires ex- perience. Three quarters of our members, far more than in any previous class, have had the opportunity to speak from this stage. More than half have participated in a brodcast over WIPD, and 137, have already appeared on WDMI-TV. During four years of high school, 20 boys have been members of the football team, 20 have gone out for track, ll have par- ticipated in basketball, 6 have engaged in baseball, and 2 have been members of the go'f team. , 7 'Q Evidently many of us listen to the Where to Go and What to Do program, for we have participated in a large number of activitles outside of school. We belong to DeMolay, Iob's Daughters, National Guard, Scouts, City Band, Choral Club, Hematite Rifle Club, Mac- cabees, and the Ishpeming Ski Club. A ma- jority of our class are members of 13 church groups, and 81 'Z of us regularly attend 13 dif- ferent churches. We must not fail to mention the ever-present chores at home. Eighteen have avoided them, and this includes one smart girl who is relieved of household tasks by giving up her allowance to her younger sister! Recreation plays an important part in our lives. Swimming, the pastime of the majority, is enjoyed by 97 '70 of the class, Twenty-one per cent have learned in the pool at Ishpeming High. Camping, movies, and dancing rank next in order among our interests. Our 40-odd hobbies include even such things as collecting pictures of the American Indians and studying psychiatry. Skiing is popular during the win- ter season, and 71 '70 ot the seniors have used the Winter Sports area. Only one boy has rid.- den Suicide Hill, butt 15 others have attempted the landing. We are also interested in music, since 28 '70 play the piano cmd an equal num- ber can play some other instrument. Our class can claim 2 amateur radio operators and a winter queen. We seem to be a group of travelers, for all of us have been outside of Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula, and only 2 have never left the state of Michigan. Twenty-six of us have flown in an airplane, but 19 have never ridden in a train. More than half have visited Canada, and 5 have gone to Mexico. One boy has traveled to Europe, while CITI- other has spent the greater part of his life in South America. Eighty-nine per cent of us have attended at least one school party while 53 '70 have gone to an Ishpeming Prom. All but 5 seniors have visited the Ishpeming Youth Center, and 7171, the same number as last year, have attended regularly. Over three-quarters of us go to the movies at least once a week, but 6 have no interest at all in this form of recreation. ' On the all-important question of dating, 917, of the class date, a greater nuimber than last year. Sixty-eight per cent believe in steady dating, and an equal number have practiced it. All of our interests take u's away from home an average of four nights a week, but only 7 C6705 of us, the smallest number ever, are out every night. We retire at approximately 10:00 P, M. on week nights and awaken about 7:00 A. M. on week days. Of course, this does not account for our weekends! Only 427, of our class hold part-time jobs. With the exception of the year 1949, this is the lowest number to hold jobs in 20 years. Our average wage is 80C an hour, Zc less than the alltime high of last year. Fifty-two graduates have had experience clerking, and one-half the class have delivered papers. We are as thirfty as the 1957 graduates, be- cause 52 70 again have savings accounts, while 30 70 have 'Christmas Clubs and 52 70 own gov- ernment bonds. ln contrast, our weekly ex- penditures vary from nothing to Sl5, with the average per week being 52.46. Gurs is also a class of many material pos- sessions. We own a total of 351 radios for an average of three to a home. One hundred thirteen families have at least one television set, and we seniors spend about 2174 hours a day watching television. Eighty per cent of our parents own their homes, and 43 70 have camps, double the number 20 years ago. All but 3 families have at least one car, and 8570 of us have to argue with our 145 brothers and 163 sisters about who can have the family car. Of the 110 C92 705 licensed drivers in our class, 76 C647,5 have learned through the IHS Driver Training course. Twenty-four of urs own our own cars, and 3 have jeeps. We can a'so claim ownership to 68 bicycles and 8 motorboats. Eighty-three different magazines and news- papers are found in our homes. We take care of our 63 pets, and one girl claims that the only pets in her family are hor three baby sis- ters! In the year 1944 more than half of the class graduated from the Science Course, the high- est number ever. ln 1949 this number dropped sharply to 2271. Apparently the emphasis be- ing placed on missiles and satellites has be- gun to show some effect, because this year 47, or 407, of the seniors are graduating from the Science Course. Twenty-three of us are majors in Business Education, 17 are graduating from the General Course, 14 chose the History and Social 'Science Course, 13 are specializing in Industrial Arts, and 5 graduates from the Home Economics Course complete the list. Looking to the future, we find that almost three-fourths of the class plan to cont nue their edu-cation beyond high school. Twenty years ago about one-third of the seniors had decid- ed on a definite vocation, while this year one- half have chosen their vocations. Teaching, engineering, and clerical work are the first, second, and third choices. Thirty-one senior boys are planning to enlist in the Armed Forces, and almost half have chosen the Navy. lThe time for statistics is over, but ahead of us 'lie many years for continuing our efforts so that we can realize the dreams of these early years and fulfill the promises we have made to ourselves and the world. -Karen Bennelt GIFTATORY - PROPHECY INTRODUCTION We were sprouts to school just startin' Back in days of kindergarten. But gradually, of course, we grew And lots and lots of facts we knew. Until today behold - you see The finished product - Our Class Tree.
