GIRLS ' BASKE TBALL The girls' basketball team made a poor showing at the beginning of the season, but they improved a great deal throughout the year. They were sorry to lose two of their players, Velma Breining and Melba Winsor, shortly after practice began. They were physically unable to continue. The team was glad to receive two new players Carmen Blackwell and Delores Ahrenholtz from Defiance, who were an asset to the team. Both girls played the position of guard. Throughout the year the players that showed most im- provement were Carmen Blackwell, Gloria Thompson, and Ardith Olson. On the first team the forwards were Ladelle Wiese, Dixie Larson, and Verlee Petersen. The guards were Mary Jensen, Carmen Blackwell, and Lyla Wiese. The members of the second team were Eleanore Shipp, Lorraine Smith, Charlyne Kuchel, Virginia Anthony, Ardith Olson, Gloria Thompson, and Delores Ahrenholtz. At the time of this writing, the high scorer was Ladelle Wiese with 315 points and an average cn' 19 points for each game. Dixie Larson was next highest with 203 points, and an average of 12 points. Verlee Petersen was the third highest with 76 points. lrwin's loss to Charter Oak broke their record of winning all the games on the home floor. Irwin won seven of the eight games played on the home floor, and won five of the nine games played away. The team next year will experience a great loss, as all but one of the players on the first team were seniors. The girls played one of their best games, and fought the hardest at the Girls' Sectional Tournament with Manilla. Manilla had the advantage over Irwin, because she was playing on her home floor. In the County Tournament they played the winning team of the game between Shelby and Tennant. The winning team was Shelby.
