Of the thirteen that started together there were only eight of them in t.he present graduating class. They were as follows: Mary Jensen, Dixie Larson, James McMahon, Verlee Petersen, David Piper, Robert Olson, Lyla Wiese, and Charlotte Young. The others that began with us were, Ruby Bandow, Allen Juhl, Raymond Hiatt, Kathryn Lakers, and Virginia Mulligan. During the past twelve years of school life, several new students joined our class and others moved away. Virginia left us after the first semester to go to country school. At the beginning of the fourth six weeks period Kathryn started to school in Fiscus. At the ripe age of six, we were transplanted to the second grade. Allen Juhl re- mained behind that year. Miss Cardigg was our teacher. We as third graders, were directed by Miss Maxwell. Joyce Anvick became a new member of our class. We started our fourth grade with the same students except for Joyce who transferred to country school. Wilma Anderson was our new teacher. We all climbed into our fifth grade seats with the addition of Joyce. That year we studied with a new teacher, Miss Heirsche. Miss Williams became our sixth grade teacher. Joyce again returned to country school. Jim Swanson and Louis Schweisow were new additions to our class, but Louis left us before the year ended. ln the seventh year, Mr. Harvey was our instructor. Ramona Jensen came into our ranks at the beginning of the second semester. The eighth grade found us with Miss Betty Lou Ahrenholtz as our teacher. Ruby Bandow left us that year to go to school in Manilla. ln September 1944, the freshmen were joined by Dorothy Juhl, Merlin Flug, John Frees, Leslie Burger, and Betty Hemminger from various country schools. We began that year with Mr. Garlock, Miss Moeller, Miss Huey, and Miss Fogarty. As sophomores we had as our teachers, Mr. Garlock, Miss Moeller, Miss Huey, and Mrs. Hennis. Mrs. Hennis left shortly a.fter school began. Mr. Thompson came that year at Christmas time. The teaching staff for our junior year was as follows: Mr. Miller, Miss Platts, Mr. Watson, Mrs. Hennis and Mr. Thompson. That year we lost Leslie Burger who gave up school to become a full-fledged farmer. Ramona left us to finish school in Harlan. And now here we are, mighty and ambitious seniors, waiting for our hard earned diplomas. Much to our regrets we lost John Frees who had to quit school, because of an automobile mishap last summer. It won't be long until all our high school days will be history and we will be members of that growing organization, the Irwin Alumni Association. CLASS PROPHECY OF THE CLASS OF '48 It is now 1958, ten years since the class of '48 threw their books aside and ventured out into the world. A few days back, while recalling the days in I. H. S., I wondered what the remainder of the dear old class were doing to keep what the remainder of the dear old class were doing to keep themselves Qaheml busy. I ventured into my study and now as I look into the new Super Powered Telescopic Telescope I see .Tim Swanson is piloting planes for United Airlines. He became interested in this occupation while driving his old Sl to' school back in those days spent in I. .I-I. S. Quite by coincidence his wife is the stewardess on his plane. Two o'f the members of the class are running a gambling joint in Loonyville. Kentucky. The name of it is Wiesenlarson Mentecarlo . Neither Lyla nor Dixie has accepted marriage. lCan you feature that?j Duane Smith has proved very successful in these ten years. He is now a well known scientist and is doing research work on sweet tomatoes, expecially the 4 clinging vine type. I have trouble finding Mary, as she quite suddenly decided that she would like to be in the movies and changed her name to LullaBelle Fitz. I find her in her luxurious home in Beverly Hills reading her proposals. fShe receives them by mail., Next I see something glittering in the sky. As I draw nearer I discover it is none other than Marcille Ahrenholtz doing her breath-taking act on the highwire in her beautiful silver tights. She has done very well with Ringling Brothers' Circus. I catch David Piper in the bathtub. He reaches for one of Sally Rand's fans as he steps out of the tub to answer the telephone. David has always admired Miss Rand and finally made the grade as her dancing partner. David is hoping to work himself up to work with Betty Grable. JAMES V. MC MAI-ION Superintendent This is the sign I see hanging on the office door of the Dipso-Maniac Insane Asylum. I urge anyone who is in need of help along this line to please call on our old classmate. ' Verlee is leading a very busy life with a doctor for a husband and three small children to care for. She had formerly planned to take nursing as a career, but evidently her mind was changed. Ah yes, police cars are now rushing to a radio station in New York, where a crooner, Charles Wooster, is about to be trampled on by a crowd of teen-age girls. He has made the song Meet Me Tonight, Darling popular. Class Prophecy lContinuedJ What is this? No, it couldn't be! Oh, but it is! It is Bob Olson, and it seems as though he has changed his ways of living since '48. He is now a minister. INow do you see what I mean by his change 'Pj He is very well-pleased with his newly- found profession. I find that Charlotte Young and her husband have erected a library a few blocks from Cornpatch College, in Irwin. They have been considering giving the library a new manager and moving to a farm near Manilla. They prefer country to city life for the health of their five charming children. From a building in New York I hear a familiar voice yelling Stop the press . As I approach the building I find it is Merlin Flug. He is the editor of the New York Times. What was that? Gunfire? Why, it is Carmen Blackwell and her husband chasing a dangerous criminal. Yes, Carmen is working with her husband as a girl detective. As yet, they have not discovered the true identity of the Green Hornet. This seems to be all there were in the class. Oh yes, by the way, I am none other than Dorothy J'uhl, and I am married now and kept quite busy raising my family and helping my husband, who is proprietor of the Holloway Hybrid Seed Corn Company in good ol' Eaglesville, Missouri. ' irlillkliitiiiiili Bob O.: Jim, what make of car do you call that one you have? Jim S.: Well it's the old reliable type of R. F. D. Bob O.: What kind is that? Jim S.2 Rescued from the dumps. Each freshman student was dressed like a character in the comic strips. On the evening of September 1 l, the entire high school enjoyed entertainment provided by the freshmen and directed by the seniors, climaxed by a watermelon feast. . Of course, everyone has to have officers to carry on any kind of business so those elected for the senior class of 1947 and 1948 were as follows: President ------------------ Lyla Wiese ViCe-President ---- -------- Jim Swanson Secretary -------- - -- Carmen Blackwell Treasurer ---- ----------- -- Duane Smith On October 15, the class enjoyed a much looked-forward-to picnic which was planned very carefully but didn't go exactly according to play. Nevertheless, it was fun! Then came the day the class was released from school to sell ads fOr the annual. The class was divided into two groups and each group was to cover specified towns in the vicinity of Irwin. December 17 was a day which will never be forgotten by many of the class. That was the time when they went to Des Moines to visit' the state capitol and set in on a special session of congress. On January 9, the class had their pictures taken. A few days later the study hall was buzzing with voices as the seniors passed their proofs around or everyone to see. And, of course, they have to have a play, too, so many play books were mixed in with the school books while the class was deciding to present Peck's Bad Boy . When this article was written, the cast had not yet been chosen. For the class gift the seniors debated for several days on getting a movie projector. As this is quite a costly gift, they asked the junior class if they would like to pay half and the machine be a gift from the two classes. The juniors agreed and the machine was purchased, and used a great deal during the second semester. The elevator to success is broken, take a ladder??, was the motto of the class: American beauty rose, the flower: and American beauty rose and gray, the colors. The members of the class as a whole are looking forward to the Junior-Senior banquet to be held in their honor by the junior class. . -. .. . fl t , 1 I-. L1 ,, . . 4 ' v- . Mother, Johnnie exclaimed, why is that man shaking his stick at the lady? ShushI He's not shaking his stick at her, said the parent. Then what, queried Johnnie, is she screaming about? Mary: What is the matter grandpa? Grandpa: I've lost my glasses and I can't look for them til I find them. Charles: What are you going to do with that tree when you chop it down?' Merlin: Chop it up. Friend of Ly1a's Mother: What's your daughter's average income? Lyla's Mother: From 2 to 2:30 A. M. A woman went to buy a drinking trough for her dog, and the shopkeeper asked if she would like one with the inscription For the dog. It really doesn't matter, she replied, my husband never drinks water and the dog can't read. It takes 3,000 bolts to hold a truck together, but only one nut to scatter it all over the country side. Verlee witnessing a tug of war for the first time: Wouldn't it be simpler for them to get a knife and cut it? Bob Olson: I wish l had a nickel for every girl I've kissed. They were sorry to lose two of their players, Velma Breining and Melba Winsor, shortly after practice began. They were physically unable to continue. The team was glad to receive two new players Carmen Blackwell and Delores Ahrenholtz from Defiance, who were an asset to the team. Both girls played the position of guard. Throughout the year the players that showed most im- provement were Carmen Blackwell, Gloria Thompson, and Ardith Olson. On the first team the forwards were Ladelle Wiese, Dixie Larson, and Verlee Petersen. The guards were Mary Jensen, Carmen Blackwell, and Lyla Wiese. The members of the second team were Eleanore Shipp, Lorraine Smith, Charlyne Kuchel, Virginia Anthony, Ardith Olson, Gloria Thompson, and Delores Ahrenholtz. At the time of this writing, the high scorer was Ladelle Wiese with 315 points and an average cn' 19 points for each game. Dixie Larson was next highest with 203 points, and an average of 12 points. Verlee Petersen was the third highest with 76 points. lrwin's loss to Charter Oak broke their record of winning all the games on the home floor. Irwin won seven of the eight games played on the home floor, and won five of the nine games played away. The team next year will experience a great loss, as all but one of the players on the first team were seniors. The girls played one of their best games, and fought the hardest at the Girls' Sectional Tournament with Manilla. Manilla had the advantage over Irwin, because she was playing on her home floor. In the County Tournament they played the winning team of the game between Shelby and Tennant. The winning team was Shelby. The rest of the members were Bill Ahrenholtz, Allen Juhl, Ted Axland, Jack Buthman, John Paulsen, Richard McMahon, and Milton Barry. High pointers this year were James McMahon with 112 points, David Piper was next with 89 points, and the Allen Juhl with 74 points.
