Gelis, Mr. Bowers. 20 The arrival of June brought the juniors to the end of another happy year of high school life, a year that was filled with care- free fun as well as ambitious work. It did not take this energetic group long to recog- nize their duties and responsibilities. In September they immediately made plans which they successfully carried out. The main project of the class of nineteen fifty- one was the staging of the annual Junior and Senior Prom which they held early in May. Among other outstanding contributions to the school was the number of adept ath- letes which came from this class. Nick Gelis, Carl Dean Davis, Nobi Ackermann, Maynard Kemerer, and Eddie Jennings were all mem- bers of our championship basketball team. John Hunt and Bob Wolf, as managers, help- ed look after the players and their equipment. Norma Lender, Shirley Epley, and Martha Koury made a valuable contribution to our sports program. As cheerleaders they led the crowd in urging our team on to victory. Other extra-curricular activities also occupied a large part of their time. Last summer Norma Lender was sent to a Junior Red Cross camp at Webster Springs, West Virginia. She learned at this camp how to organize the club which was successfully started in our own school. Arlene Long, Ann Schnur, and Carla Norberg gave up one eve- ning a Week for volunteer Work at the public library. Over fifty percent of the juniors took part in one or more of the musical or- ganizations in the school. Marjorie Lentz, accomplished on the flute, was a member of both the Westmoreland County Band and Orchestra. Several members of this class worked on the staffs of the Carillon and Round-Up preparing themselves for the job of managing the publications in 1951. The junior class was no exception when it came to humor. Their speeches in public speaking class will long be remembered for their laughs as well as for the vital training which they gave. Who will ever forget Jerry Vernail's arguments with Miss Hershey or the feuding, fussing, and fighting which went on continuously in class or out be- tween two groups of junior boys? Of course the fellows said this was all in fun. In closing we want to mention Evanna Heidbreder and David Barnard who main- tained high scholastic grades throughout the year. The juniors having already proved their leadership will become next year's capable seniors of whom we will hear many fine reports.
