We, the seniors of Irwin High School, being proud of our town and our school, decided to dedicate this yearbook to the idea of our interdependence. From the school come the future citizens of Irwin. This places upon our teachers a great responsibility. In addition to their regular school duties, we find them giving generously of their own time to many community activities. In turn, our townspeople, give of their interest, energy, and money to support everything which the school promotes. It is this cooperative spirit which strengthens both the school and the community and which forms the foundation of this typical American town. . Gelis, Mr. Bowers. 20 The arrival of June brought the juniors to the end of another happy year of high school life, a year that was filled with care- free fun as well as ambitious work. It did not take this energetic group long to recog- nize their duties and responsibilities. In September they immediately made plans which they successfully carried out. The main project of the class of nineteen fifty- one was the staging of the annual Junior and Senior Prom which they held early in May. Among other outstanding contributions to the school was the number of adept ath- letes which came from this class. Nick Gelis, Carl Dean Davis, Nobi Ackermann, Maynard Kemerer, and Eddie Jennings were all mem- bers of our championship basketball team. John Hunt and Bob Wolf, as managers, help- ed look after the players and their equipment. Norma Lender, Shirley Epley, and Martha Koury made a valuable contribution to our sports program. As cheerleaders they led the crowd in urging our team on to victory. Other extra-curricular activities also occupied a large part of their time. Last summer Norma Lender was sent to a Junior Red Cross camp at Webster Springs, West Virginia. She learned at this camp how to organize the club which was successfully started in our own school. Arlene Long, Ann Schnur, and Carla Norberg gave up one eve- ning a Week for volunteer Work at the public library. Over fifty percent of the juniors took part in one or more of the musical or- ganizations in the school. Marjorie Lentz, accomplished on the flute, was a member of both the Westmoreland County Band and Orchestra. Several members of this class worked on the staffs of the Carillon and Round-Up preparing themselves for the job of managing the publications in 1951. The junior class was no exception when it came to humor. Their speeches in public speaking class will long be remembered for their laughs as well as for the vital training which they gave. Who will ever forget Jerry Vernail's arguments with Miss Hershey or the feuding, fussing, and fighting which went on continuously in class or out be- tween two groups of junior boys? Of course the fellows said this was all in fun. In closing we want to mention Evanna Heidbreder and David Barnard who main- tained high scholastic grades throughout the year. The juniors having already proved their leadership will become next year's capable seniors of whom we will hear many fine reports. THEY GIVE PROMISES OF GREAT THINGS TO COME STANDING: S. Eplcy, B. Unrue, This year's sophomore class is a most important link in the chain of activities of our school and our town. The proof of its boundless energy is shown by the fact that all the junior varsity cheerleaders came from this class. These girls were Eileen O'- Connell, Dolores Ference, Arlene Kemerer, Norma Nicholas, and Sally Lou Brown. Wanda Hughes was a varsity cheerleader. Five boys played basketball. Arthur Young- stead was on the varsity and William Carl- son, Robert Richards, Edwin Anthony and Robert Unrue were on junior varsity. Tom- my Parker was manager of the junior high team. Three students, Eileen O'Connell, Sara Wampler and Francis Lache, entered from the parochial school and James Heckendorn from Punxatawney. Alan Berk left at mid- term to enter Taylor Alderdice High School. Afterward Edgar Mueller had a clear field, being the only member of the class to be an honor roll student. Enjoying social affairs thoroughly, the sophomores held a picnic at Bushy Run in the fall. At the Freshman-Sophomore Party, singing, square dancing, and clever panto- mine added up to a happy evening. At Christmas, President Arthur Youngstead dressed as Santa Claus, came bouncing out of Miss J ones' cupboard to everyone's amaze- ment. Most of the girls belonged to Girls' Chorus. Outstanding in music were Wanda Hughes, trumpeter, who was a member of the Westmoreland County Orchestra, Gloria Staymates, gifted pianist, and Marjorie Dur- nin, whose sweet voice was a joy to hear. The last two were also members of Triple Trio. Members of this class were found in many school activities, which speaks well for their versatility. Miss Jones, their adviser, said the year had been full of fun. They will probably always remember Arthur's blond hair and his sincerity as class president. Ed Anthony and Jim Heckendorn's explosive tempers, and Larry George and Edgar Muller's clown- ing often broke the serenity of a class. The girls had their moments, too. How they teas- ed Norma Nicholas, just for fun of course! And Mary Cummings, what a serious depend- able person she Was. This class was known around school as very dependable. They got things done but had the knack of not making a fuss about it. Stepping up to the position of juniors will be easy for them, since they have a sturdy foundation already built. .YOFAOIMOTZ 616:55 OFFICERS President ..,.,... It has always been loyal, full of rivalry and possesses a school spirit unequalled by any other group. Any school function found them attending in force. Their big event, the traditional Hall- owe'en Party in which they joined the sev- enth and eighth grades, was a huge success. Later in the year the Freshman-Sophomore Party was made lively by square dancing. Starting early to develop their dramatic talents, several members of this class pre- sented a humorous play Be My Valentine, which was appreciated by everyone. In the cast were Carole Rainey, Nancy Benninger, Joanne John, Bill Wolf, Harold Johnson, Bill Stubbs, Barbara Bergad, Joyce Williams, and Dan Creighton. Outstanding in scholarship were Nancy Kooser, Carole Ann Rainey, Edward Siegel and Marlene Gordon. Bill Stubbs was discovered to be a great little speech maker at the Student Congress in Monessen. Being an outstanding singer, Eddie Siegel was one of the few freshmen to be selected for County Chorus. On the junior varsity basketball team was Gerald Gongaware and on junior high were Jay McFarland, Edward Siegel, Louis Dalessandro, and Paul Vasquez. These boys were urged on to good scoring by cheer- leaders Marlene Gordon, Ann McElfresh, Joyce Williams, and Nancy Benninger. Having a reputation for impishness carried over from last year, the freshmen have grown up this year, but are still well organized in delaying action, a method of geting a teacher off the subject. They will never forget the imcessant chatter of Nick and Carole and the sprawling legs of Stacy and Gerald. As a group they were well liked for their good sportsmanship and en- thusiasm. However, Mr. Shirley will pro- bably give a big sigh of relief when they be- come sophomores. Looking forward, we know that this group of H-Bombs will con- tinue to develop its many talents and be a credit to the school and the community. 24 Mr. Shirley, J. Williams, R. McFarland G. MCMUNN Zyh th 72112 The students of the eighth grade this year have set a high standard for the on- coming class to match. Having the same homeroom teacher for two successive years would have disturbed most classes, but when the teacher was Mr. McMunn, they did not mind a bit. They loved to hear Joe's jokes and to postpone a class by skillfully getting him started talking about sports. An unusually large number of eighth graders were outstanding in scholarship. Those on the honor roll were Larry Milburn, Janice Cooley, Mona Lee George, Colin Nor- berg, Charles Patton, Jean Sam, George Schade, John Waugaman, Paul Cole, and Lynn Holloman. Almost all of the members of this lively class found time to take part in at least one of the school's activities. Those boys who will be future members of our varsity squad and who this year played on the junior high basketball team were Bill Cummings, Don Good, John Waugaman, George Gongaware, Colin Norberg, and Charles Patton. Larry Milburn was the team manager. Jean Sam and Mona Lee George were two of the junior high cheerleaders. The eighth grade was also well represented in the high school band and the Junior Girls' Chorus. Taking the parts of Santa's two helpers, Janice Cooley and Joanne Marchand had important roles in the Christmas Operetta. Having an interest in photography, Paul Cole and Stan Lunn gave their services to the Camera Club. Lynn Holloman and Janice Cooley were selected to represent their class at the Junior Red Cross meetings. So we see that the many at- tributes of this group will make them val- uable members of our senior high and an asset to our community in years to come. Being fun-loving and socially inclined, the eighth grade staged several parties. The first of these was a Hallowe'en Party which they held with the freshmen and seventh grade. Mr. Dudley, Mr. Shirley and Mr. Bowers highlighted this party when they arrived dressed as women. To have twins as classmates is quite unusual, but the eighth grade has them. Twins, Jean and Joann Sam, are quite popu- lar. Is it because of their smooth dancing? Will the boys and girls of this class ever forget such things as: Emory Lear and his late library books, Paul Cole's bashfulness, Sleepy Cook, or the kidding Colin Norberg took about his basketball scores? As next year's freshmen we are sure they will not lack talent and enthusiasm. eventh glide 0 0 0 OFFICERS PrcsideIIt. ,.... , ..,.. . DAVID KOURY Vice-Pros .............,... THEY ARE OFF TO A GOOD START Having ended a very enjoyable school term and hoping for one as successful next year, the ambitious seventh grade, guided by the experienced hand of Miss Wiley, is proud of its many accomplishments. The class chose as leaders David Koury as presi- dent and Jerry Sandson vice-president. Keep- ing the books were Secretary Kay Daniels and Treasurer Kay Johnson. Ranking high in scholastic standings were Jerry Sandson, Bill Lomicka, and Ei- leen Lohr. Exceptionally good in math were the popular David Koury and David Gram- lich. Though a little awkward and especially shy of the sewing machines, this class showed its ability in home economics through the fine work of Dolores Blystone and Eileen Lohr. Mrs. Stauffer has been pleased to find that Eugene Shorthouse and Lloyd Simpson demonstrated artistic talent. Adding greatly to the success of the junior high squad was Lloyd Simpson who showed good form and will probably be varsity material in his high school days. Ad- ding zest to the cheering section, Sonny,' Koury, an ardent supporter of the team, helped with loud and hearty yells. Darlene Cloherty showed special talent in tap-dancing by winning the amateur con- test sponsored by the Lions Club. Ken and Bill Lomicka and Eileen Lohr all play clari- nets in the Irwin High Band. Everyone likes to hear the fine singing of Eugene Shorthouse and Jerry Sandson. An oddity of the class is the repetition of the name Kay. Three of the thirteen girls have this name, Kay Davis, Kay Daniels, and Kaye Johnson. Few of the pupils will ever forget when Francis Caserio, the livliest boy in the class, let a praying mantis loose in the room to the terror of all the girls. Nor will they forget when Jerry Sandson was caught singing the Star Spangled Ban- ner in front of the room when he was sup- posed to be conducting class while the teacher was out. Miss Cason was heard to say that they were extremely proud of what they made even if it might be only an apron. Joe Mc- Munn, their math teacher, said that in gen- eral they were an outstanding class. Very active and industrious was a comment of Mr. Balog. This class has set a high standard which all future junior high classes can strive to maintain. 29 BULLETQN some wok -Hctivitia gtoufcf out pay In our small school it is possible to pre- dict the future interest of IrWin's future citizens. Some people say Activities play too great a part in the program of the pres- ent day school. But by nature we are all gregarious and society loving and it is our school organizations which provide outlets for these wholesome characteristics. The val- ue of proper leadership, cooperation, and of mixing fun with work are a few things taught by our clubs and societies which are not as easily learned in the formal classroom. Irwin is a town of joiners. We have more local organizations than the average community our size. It is these organizations which strengthen the bands of unity and co- operation in the town. Irwin's numerous ser- vice clubs, the Toastmaster's club, the Little Theater, the Male Chorus, all look to the school to provide their future members. In an election conducted by Mr. Clawson, the club's adviser, Dean Neiman was elected president, Nick Gelis vice-president, and Eleanore O'Connell secretary. Because of the similarity of problems which exist in the junior and senior high, the junior high repre- sentatives joined with high school officers to form one large student council. The first project undertaken by the council was the super- vision of the ticket sales for the all-school play, Plane Crazy. Then, during the Christmas vacation the club staged the annual Christmas formal, which they called the Holiday Hop. The orchestra committee chose Larry Palmer for this dance. In previous years the Hop was sponsored by the publications, but in order to better gain the support of the whole school, it was decided that the Student Council should back this expensive dance. Before the basketball season the students' representatives again assembled to select varsity and junior varsity cheer- leaders. Such things as the date of the school picnic, the type of celebrations to be held after important athletic victories, and general school conduct are under the guidance of this organiza- tion. The Student Council carried out a policy of modern edu- cation, that of developing democratic practice in schools which will carry over into adult community living. BACK Row fleft to rightj: S. During the 1949-1950 term, the girls enjoyed collecting and packaging clothes to send to Kentucky. They enjoyed making valentines for the children in the Children's Home at Greensburg. One of the more frivilous events was the annual Twirp Dance in Feb- ruary which had the whole-hearted support of the club members. Under the leadership of their President, Eleanore O'Con- nellg Vice President, Lurana Heidbrederg Secretary, Pat Jarvis, and Treasurer, Ethel Sandson, the girls contributed to inter- national and local welfare. Internationally, they promoted wel- fare through a CARE package sent to Germany which was joyously received by a family there. Locally the girls helped to create better feeling by inviting the Tri-Hi-Y members of North Huntingdon Township High School to attend a picnic at Bushy Run. When the Irwin Public Library moved to its new location, Tri-Hi-Y'ers were eager to help. Then in the true spirit of Easter, the girls contributed to a basket which was sent to a needy family in the vicinity. Offering their services whenever called upon, they felt that this year was the most enjoyed of all, since they had emphasized the pleasure of others rather than their own enjoyment. Miss Jones, their adviser, is the dynamo of this fine group of girls. unioz keel 620.45 o o - SECOND Row fleft to rightb : Janice Cooley, Marlene Gor- don, Nancy Kooser, Leo Ped- ley, Darlene Cloherty, Gloria Staymates, John Gard, Lloyd Simpson, Lynn Holloman. First, they arranged for a speaker to come and address our student body. The speaker, Mrs. Ratner, showed an enlightening movie to illustrate the Work being done by the Red Cross. Two students were then chosen from each class in the junior and senior high to represent their classmates in the Irwin Junior Red Cross. At their first meeting these members elected Carla Norberg, president, Norma Lender, vice-president, and Nancy Benninger, secretary-treasurer. For their first project this group began to pack Red Cross boxes which were sent to the needy children of Europe. Then following one good deed with another, they made favors which were sent to the Old Ladies' Home at Greensburg. Being asked to help with the St. Patrick's Day party at the Aspinwall Veterans' Hospital made our Junior Red Cross members ex- ceptionally proud. This party was sponsored by the Red Cross, but the Junior Red Cross helped furnish the decorations and refreshments. The success of this first year should guarantee future support of the Red Cross in Irwin. .44-.y. .. Encourages community service Mr. Bowers assembled his Hi-Y boys in September to plan a year of fun and service to the school and to the community. Their year's program opened with the induction of eleven boys from the junior class. These new members were put through two days of initiation which was as amusing to the whole school as it was to those participating. Following the less serious initiation antics was the formal initiation, this was held in the gym prior to an evening of games and refreshments. It was the forerunner of many such game nights held by the Hi-Y. The Hi-Y showing their true spirit of community service formed a basketball team which defeated a much stronger C. Y. O. five in a benefit at Greensburg. The proceeds of this game were turned over to the local March of Dimes fund. This team also played other Hi-Y's, local independent teams, and partici- pated in a Y. M. C. A. tournament. At Christmas they donated ten dollars from their limited funds to the Westmoreland County Children's Home. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Bowers the Hi-Y'ers were never at a want for sound advice, nor were they ever seen with straight faces while he was around. For the 1949-1950 term the Hi-Y elected as their leaders, Dean Neiman, president, Garry Swenson, vice-prsident, and Albert Rydel, secretary. These officers along with their fellow members, will be fine material for Irwin's numerous service clubs. ACK Row Cleft to rightjx '. Ackermann, W. Lohr, A. ydel, P. Bergman, G. Swen- mn. The .Kan The Irwin Band was extremely success- ful this year under the leadership of Mr. George Weaver. Mr. Weaver, returning from the service a few years ago, where he played in the army band, took over a newly formed group and after three years has turned it into one of the best school bands in the county. Helping Mr. Weaver in arranging the band activities were the officers, Dean Neiman, president, Lurana Heidbreder, sec- retary. The two managers, Don Adams and Jack Clarke took charge of the music and band equipment. The Band has played many times for the P. T. A., but their best performance was the excellent concert presented on April 13. They were also very active in many parades, playing on Armistice Day, Decor- tion Day, and Labor Day. They also marched up Pennsylvania Avenue with Governor Duff to the new Turnpike-Extension for the ground breaking ceremony. There is nothing like a home town band. Students and citizens alike got a thrill when the blue and gold banner came up the street followed by this representative group from all departments of Irwin School. 36 Left to Right: S. Abbott, D. Several times during the course of the week's schedule the voices of the Triple Trio could be heard singing in close harmony. Their music always distracted our attention from class routine. Originally having nine members as their title implies, one more member was added this year to act as substitute. The Triple Trio sang upon many occasions such as school affairs, P. T. A. meetings, church meetings, and for organizations of our community. They have obtained a fine reputation by their gracious giving of their beautiful voices. Miss Carroll always accompanied them at the piano. The orchestra, although a small group, was a very necessary part of the school. The Qmillon 0 Oi 0 Portrays annual story Our Town was chosen as the theme for the 1950 Carillon to show our appreciation for the support which the townspeople have given our school. An aerial view picture of Irwin taken by a Pittsburgh Press photographer gave us the idea for this theme. Editor Dean Neiman, under the direction of Mrs. Hamilton, supervised all writing that was doneg while Business Manager Don Adams had charge of all necessary transactions. The senior class showed fine cooperation in producing this book, particularly Sally Bock, for assisting the editor, Jack Clarke for his art, Dick Painter for typing, Garry Swenson for photography, and Richard Ference for the use of his car. The 1949 Carillon under the editorship of Barbara Millen, set a goal toward which we could strive by receiving first class awards from the C. S. P. A., the N. S. P. A., and the IP. S. P. A. This year the Quill and Scroll initiation and a dinner dance were held at the Jacktown Hotel. The students honored by being selected for membership were, Ethel Sandson, Editor of Round-Up, Dean Neiman, and Don Adams. EDITORIAL STAFF TOP fleft to rightl : E. Muel ler, W. Raver, S. Boch. Developes personal poise The National Forensic League Chapter at Irwin again proved to be an outstanding club. The development of new talent is the greatest accomplishment this year. Both old and new members were eager and willing to give their best and proved this by participating in many tournaments in the surrounding district. A very successful tournament this season was staged at Irwin on January 16, with eleven schools attending. Following the tournament a dance was held with Mr. Staska's orchestra providing the music. Fifteen students have gained membership in the National Forensic League this year by competing in tournaments and receiving the required twenty points needed for membership. Those presented with membership certificates at a special award dinner were: Garry Swenson, Barbara Barrish, Paul Bergman, Eileen O'Connell, Helen McKenna, William Stubbs, Joanne Johns, Barbara Bergad, Shirley Abbott, Robert Wolf, June Christman, William Raver, Robert Unrue, Sue Helman and Nan- cy Benninger. The first nine have also received their degree of honor by obtaining the required additional thirty points needed for the degree. Maynard Kemerer was awarded the degree of distinction for gaining a total of 200 points. He is the first member from Irwin who has received this honor. ommetcia! gfufo o e Stresses business outlook On Thursday afternoon during seventh period as Dick Painter called the meeting to order many Irwin students stopped pounding on their typewriters. Besides Dick Painter as pres- ident, Richard Carnathan, Delores Ray and Joanne Loughner were elected as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, res- pectively. This club's activities included many worthwhile projects as well as social events. Giving up leisure hours on several evenings before Christmas some members repaired broken toys for the Children's Home of Greensburg. These were welcomed and in a few days, the club received a thank you card from the Children's Home. Mary Ann Errett and Paul Bergman leading the Pro- gram Committee, had many interesting and educational pro- grams throughout the year. Several guest speakers were invited to attend meetings among whom was Mr. Fred Neiman who spoke on the subject Insurance A tour of the Pittsburgh Press newspaper building was enjoyed in the spring. On the social side, at Hallowe'en a party was held which included dancing, games and plenty of good food. This was highlighted by a scavenger hunt that was enjoyed by all. A skating party held at Del Vitto's in Jeannette resulted in lots of fun with spills included. In the spring a clever one-act play was presented at a senior high assembly. Members of this club were capably guided by Charlotte Hoover. Together they aided all school activities and classes by typing and mimeographing. Many things were done for towns- people, too. All these projects added up to a very successful year. Commercial Club BACK ROW Cleft to rightl: Mrs. Hoover, N. Lender, M. Leffler, S. Epley, J. Spring- er, J. Vasquez, J. Harrison, C. Vasquez. Any school library has innumerable duties that are druggery to do alone but fun if done in a group. Girls that volunteer for this type of work are always appre- ciated by the school librarian. As the year progressed some dropped out due to other activities. Three girls Carla Norberg, Ann Schnur and Arlene Long worked an eve- ning a week at the public library, making a fine relationship between our two town libraries. In the spring, a trip was taken to Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh. There the girls learned how a really large library operates. They were especially interested in the new young people's alcove. Greater knowledge of books is a re- ward in itself for girls who do library service for their town and school. LIBRARY AIDES A. Long, M. Cummings, D. Jones. F. H. I. Miss Cason, D. Christman N. In the spring, they held an ice skating party. Two style shows, one for the Business and Professional Women's Club, the other for our own community, were held through the combined efforts of the club and sew- ing classes. Sue Helman has shown great possibilities in the art of tinting. May I Work in the dark room 7 became a familiar question for study hall teachers. A contest featuring snow scenes was planned but the mild weather caused the subject to be changed to school life. Perhaps the Camera Club's best contribu- tion was the display of the prize pictures for the National High School Photography Contest of 1949. This group's leaders should help to make better publications in the future of Irwin High. This year, to our long list of extra- curricular activities, an Art Club was added. Mrs. Stauffer, as adviser, called the first meeting early in October. Immediate- ly they began to assist other organizations by contributing their talents in making posters or programs for the school dances and parties. During Hallowe'en Week, to discourage vandalism, they artistically decorated most of the store windows throughout Irwin. At Christmas, they add ed to the school's holiday spirit by painting gay yuletide scenes on the blackboards. Later they aroused much enthusiasm among the students and teachers by spon- soring a box social. The response shown proved this type of social to be very popu- lar. I Irwin, not having a football or a base- ball team is predominately a basketball town. Any fair day you might see boys of all ages on almost every alley and playground shoot- ing at their homemade rims and banking boards. There are thousands of small towns in the United States the size of Irwin. But how many of these towns would have supported their high school basketball team as whole- heartedly as Irwin has done? No matter Where our varsity squad travelled, opposing fans were amazed at the strength and size of Irwin's cheering section. Students and adults, wearing red Texaco fireman's hats, sat side by side ringing their cowbells as sirens shrieked and confetti intermittently showered over them. Even after Irwin lost their heart-breaking championship game this spirit of loyalty was not broken. The townspeople again turned out in full force to welcome home the Champs 1 F' v QQ: J2.gw,3fm+ ,,, ',,'fsw'j-- 'wi Yi f' f-gf? 'AM' 13 ,L 4 . Irwin went on to beat West Newton 37-33, to take home their second successive county title. Starting its quest for its third W. P. I. A. L. crown, Irwin pounded Elders Ridge in the first round of W. P. I. A. L. play. A tough Glassport five was the next to fall beneath the ax, 43-38. Showing little of their strategy, Irwin beat Carmichaels to enter the W. P. I. A. L. finals, opposing Avalon. After trailing Avalon for three periods, Irwin pulleil ahead and stayed ahead with the game ending 39-37. Whipping Rockwood for their 32 straight win, Irwin advanced to the West- ern Regional semi-finals. Cresson then fell by the wayside, 44-30. Irwin proceeded to trounce Mercer 56-39 in the Western Regional final. The next stop for the un- defeated Knights was Allentown and the state championship game. A tough Kutz- town team defeated Irwin only after Irwin put on one of the finest exhibitions of courage and fight ever shown in a champ- ionship game. Trailing by 10 points in the last quarter, Irwin not only came back to tie up the game but went ahead for a few minutes. However, Kutztown managed to regain their lead and with it the class B championship. The basketball future appears bright at Irwin, with Ackermann, Jennings, Da- vis, Kemerer and Youngstead returning. BACK June Shrum Don Adams, Miss Hershey. Graduation, 1950. Thirty-two seniors are looking back on twelve long years. Will we ever forget how proud we were to be the first freshman class to enter the newly formed Irwin High School? It proved to be an exciting year. Its high spot was the cheering of Irwin's first state championship team to victory. We entered the sophomore class with four new classmates. Our memories will always retain Miss Jones' favorite expression, You missed the boat. Gradually we were assuming responsibility in school activities. Again we had the fun of following a team to state championship. As juniors we found time passing as though it had wings. Dramatics, basketball season, and J unior-Senior Prom soon brought us to the end of another memorable year. At the turn of the half century, we find ourselves having the honor of being the first four year class at Irwin High. Among our memories of our fellow classmates, that of Lee Allshouse, the old man of the class, Albert's and Jack's fine basketball playing, and the death of Gubu, Garry Swenson's imaginary dog, will always be clear in our minds. Nor will we ever forget our senior adviser and home room teacher, Miss Hershey, whose sense of fair- ness and good humor helped us through our last high school days. As for events, Prom night and a near championship basketball team were outstanding. Finally, graduation and all its excitement closed our book of school days. As alumni we hope to carry on the tradition of our school and community. SCHOOLS BIGGEST BOOSTERS o o Q DR. JOHN KIFER President WINTHROP B. BROWN Vice President .guard of fcfucation The Board of Education of Irwin Public High School must definitely be characterized as progressive. This is evidenced by the fact that by adding to the school program such things as speech correction, drivers education, shop classes for. girls and home ec. for boys, and a full time nurse, they have made this one of the finest small schools in Pennsylvania. Ample proof of this is our being one of the few small high schools in this district to be accredit- ed by the Middle Association. Through the efforts of the Board we have had a fine home for the past four years. Large sums of money have been spent in keeping our school beautiful and modernly equipped.. At the present time a painting project is under way which will do away with the drab walls and further add to the attractiveness of our school. The students appreciate the interest which this administrative body has shown in all school activities. Members of the school board could be found cheering at all basketball games and in the audience applauding every student play or band concert. We have been fortunate to have spent our high school life under the guidance of such an enthusiastic group who are the official representatives of our town. MARGARET JONES CHARLES E. BLAIR Secretary Treasurer WM. A. KUNKLE THE CARILLONEERS Dudley Rainey, .Charles Lamus, George Wea- ver, Robert Rainey, James Weaver, Larry Those dear hearts and gentle people, who live and love in Our Home Town ..... they never, never let us down. We Thank You . . . Mr. Don Young, representative of Pontiac Engraving, Mr. James Flude, our amiable local photographer, Mr. Murphy, of King-Murphy Press, played a great part in the physical makeup of this book. Their competant assistance was greatly appreciated. Without our fine sponsors however, Irwin High School could not pub- lish a yearbook. Mr. Staska, knowing about our financial troubles, organized an orchestra to play for yearbook benefit dances. These eight men have been faith- ful to the yearbook cause and have given the students many happy evenings.
