Good Friends I want to laugh when I know you’re happy. And smile at the funny things you do. I want to yell at your victories as though you did them just for me. And whenever you're sad there’s one person here who will understand. If you travel the world, no matter where, in foreign lands you’ll have this friend there. For there are very things I wouldn’t do Because friend — I BELIEVE IN YOU 3 Special Places Let us pause and raise our voices. In a hymn of joy and praise to the Irwin County High School and our happy High School days. We will share in victory ere so sweet, we will stand beside you in defeat. At our journey’s end, let our prayers ascend for Irwin County High. 4 Hard Work Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening Whose woods these are I think I know. His house in the village though He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep. 9 c □ □ □ □ □ it □ 10 □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ □ Emergency Broadcast Fun Times Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth-, The time of the singing birds is come. And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land-, The fig tree putteth forth her green figs. And the vines with the tender grape gives a good smell 10 11 Personal Victories IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you-, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you; But make allowance for their doubting too-, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or. being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise-. If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposter just the same-, If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knives to make a trap for fools; Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools-, If you can make one heap of all your winnings. And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss. And lose, and start again at your beginning. And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve you long after they are gone. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: HOLD ON! If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run. Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it. And — which is more — You’ll be a Man, my son! 13 by Rudyard Kipling Shining Hour Cherished Memories Tell me again of days gone by. Help me recall the sounds and songs. What matter if we can’t return. Back to the place where the heart belongs! Waste not your sighs on years grown old. Weep not for faces of the past. Speak not again of long lost dreams. And sands of time that flow too fast! Within the power of all men. The vision of a shining hour. In every memory there clings. The sweetness of a faded flower! And what the heart has loved the most, CAN NEVER BE MISLAID OR LOST! £A n UPRISING 14 15 The 1984 Chieftain hon- ors a special lady who during the past thirty years has been a shining example in the field of education. This year our appreciation is given to Mrs. Mildred Lockwood. 16 Dedication Henry Dishler is this year’s Star Student.
