Chieftain 1971 Letter From the Fdttor Time passes, events unfold, and once momentous happenings gradually become remnants of the past. But something remains. Here is the tangible record of that intangible something. Here is recorded an unforgettable year. I, as editor of the 1971 Chieftain, would like to express my thanks to Mr. Fussell, the faculty, and the merchants of Ocilla. For without their cooperation, this yearbook would not have been possible. We, the staff, proudly present to you the 1971 Chieftain. Sincerely, 2 Beth Connell Editor Table of Contenfe Dedication Student Life Administration and Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Clubs and Activities Awards and Honors Sports Advertising Dedication In a time when many of the schools of America are being torn apart, we, the staff of the 1971 Chieftain, feel that our school is particularly fortunate in having one who has kept us together. Between him and us, there is no generation gap, for he understands our problems - rejoicing in our triumphs and sympathizing in our defeats. Because of his unhurried efficiency, his even disposition, his fairness and impartiality in dealing with all students, his zeal to provide the best in school and out for every student, and his consideration in all matters, he commands and deserves our respect and admiration. In sincere appreciation, therefore, of the qualities which we value highly, we gratefully dedicate the 1971 Chieftain to our principal, Mr. James R. Fussell. 6 Qtudenf Homecoming 9 2nd PLACE FLOAT - KBLA 14 15 GLORY BE LIFE IS TEN PER CENT Faculty and Administration 18 MR. R. V. ROBERTS - Superintendent MRS. After twelve long years of friendship, fun, and work, we want to leave behind a written record, (not counting our marks on the water tower, signs, and highways), of our school days and some of its brightest memories. Here, friends, is the class history of ICHS Graduating Class of 1971. For most of us school life began in September of 1959 either at Ocilla Elementary, Irwinville Elementary, or Ocilla High and Industrial. First grade was a thrill and a treat for some, though it was a misery for others, especially the ones whom Mrs. Barton tamed with her trusty paddle. We learned to count, or at least we thought we did until we were in- troduced to New Math in the 7th grade. That's right, it was new math then, and it still is for many of us. We sang, danced, colored, played games, and had seasonal parties. We also found that hidden in the bushes alongside the merry pathway of grammar school were all sorts of evils that teachers like to dream up when they thought one of us sweet inno- cent darlings had been bad. The most hated of these included standing in front of the whole class on one foot or being paddled with a switch to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Our one-act play that year was Brer Rabbit, starring Howard Paulk as Mr. Farmer, Roxy Wingate as Tar Baby, and Hazel Ann Sumner as Brer Rabbit. Finally, we learned the difference between our left hand and our right hand. Surprisingly enough, however, there are some among the graduating class this year who must think twice when someone tells them to turn left or turn right. Isn't that true, Roxy? The second grade was a breeze for us progressive intellects. We had more friends and were busy making our school motto, All work makes Jack a dull boy!”, a reality. Meanwhile, that famous group Sally, Dick, and Jane backed up by the Mother, Father, Spot, and Puff Quartet send us through with a Look and a Run and a go, go, go!! The third grade was most challenging. It was here that Mrs. Morris taught many of us the art of Cursive Writing. And boy did we throw her a curve! Our only regret concerning real writing is that Brenda Ross and Ronnie Wheeler never caught on! Some of us extraordinary musical talents joined the band under Mr. Morris (double trouble), and we discovered maybe we weren't so extraordinary after all. As fourth graders, we had to buckle down to work; Fractions, multiplication, and division became nightmares and realities that almost canceled our subscription to school. And thanks to Mrs. Dorrity’s cough syrup, by the end of that year we were all practically immunized against coughs! Remember, Seniors? By the time we reached the fifth grade, we were changing classes during the day as high school students. The new, speedy reading machine became a dread for some and a joy for others. Mrs. Phillips taught us the real meaning of do, re, mi, every Thursday on Channel 8. 148 We also learned not to sing in class if the teacher was gone (ain’t that right, Camille?), Mr. Dent attempted to teach us the fifty states and capitals, but some of us had more important things to do, such as winning a box of Valentine candy!! The next year we had a class science project in which we studied the effects of smoking on rats. However, we went beyond that and learned the effects of smoking on sixth graders, too! Science under Phers really made us stand up and take notice of the pioneeR of the space age. Many of us were astronauts, jumping from the swing at too high an altitude, and making a crash landing. We elected class superlatives and we participated in field days. Just as our con- fidence was beginning to build up, Mr. Bragg decided to teach us how to print again. It was here also that we learned the art of passing barbecue potato chips around the room without even being suspected!! The seventh and eighth grades were most unlike anything we had expected. The school was different and the teachers were new. They were teaching outer space ideas like counting in base five (1.2, 3,4,10.11,12,13,14,20) and using Egyptian symbols as numbers. Why things got so bad at times, we had to take cover in the pine trees behind the Ag building for protection from the big guys during breaks. We were looked upon as bugs under the microscope. Also, Mr. Mathis surprised us with a whole glossary of health terms and her effective philosophy of Dry up! We joined every club they'd let us into and we were always well represented by our presence and voice. At this time, several outstanding students, one of the most notable being TROY, were given the opportunity to take three units of high school work. At least the program started out with a bang!! In the fall of 1967 we entered the ninth grade as Freshman in high school. Granny Harper was the fiRt in our school career to get a lick at straightening out our English, but it just didn't do no good! Miss OHI of 1968-69 was a member of the freshman class. We proved that seniors couldn't do everything! Mr. Cheshier tried to teach some of us a little Latin. Well, we came, we saw, and said to Casear with it! (and she said to Casear with us and left for good!) We also learned that it takes six weeks not eight days to learn how to write a good term paper. Mr. Owens taught us the real meaning of IF and a couple of other choice poems. And then Mr. Gibson decided it was time to increase our vocabu- lary. Since most of us had had no trouble communicating up until then, we concentrated mostly on that there English of her'n. We learned to dissect creepy little animals to see what they were made of. We even tried to catch Mr. CaRon to see what HE was made of but it must have been Cheerios because he sure could run fast. We sapped out every com- pound, element, molecule, atom, neutron, electron, and proton that Mr. Purvis had to offer, and he just didn't have anything left to teach us bright kids, so he graduated with the class of 1969. (He is presently a freshman at Valdosta State College!) After all the teachers were doing for us, some of us girls decided to do something for them; we took it upon ouRelves to teach Mrs. Chapman and Mr. Hawthorne the an of Modem Homemaking. You know, stuff like; don't wash the dishes or make up the beds - You'll need them again for the next meal and they'll just get dirty again, and your're going back to bed tonight anyway, aren't you? Mrs. Brown took it upon herself to teach us the history of this great nation. Why did you know that the President has a Cabinet, too? But as far as we were concerned, history didn't even begin until 1953, and we haven't yet finished remaking it. (Our textbook will be published 49 In September 1971 - grab you a copy, Juniors, for it will be a breeze compared to this year's edition.) As for our math department, most of us have survived three or four years of Mrs. Griner's sine and cosine, tangent and cotangent, mathematical induction, the binomial theorem, the quadratic formula, a million postulates, and those complex num- bers. Yes, we've learned something about all of it, or at least we should have by now] In our Senior year, we had many new faces - teachers and students. We wanted to continue the warm welcome cele- bration for the year but the idea of a visit to the office of the grand marshal of Irwin County High, Mr. Richard Fussell, discouraged our various activities. (Really, he is our friend!) One of the new faces on the High School wing was Mrs. McDaniel, to whom we owe tribute for at least attempting to teach us the principles of democracy. She has had a profound effect upon Troy Smith, who has vowed to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and abolish the requirement of American Government in high school systems!! Yes, Troy is very ambitious and would like to see government taught on a lower level, one that he has already passed. In high school, we tried out for sports, joined clubs, and became band members. We represented our class on the homecoming court and in parades, we elected class officers, and student council representatives, and conducted science projects. Yes, we were actually a part of the Irwin County High School Student Body. As time has passed, we have lettered in sports, won honors and awards in subjects and clubs, and have participated in Literary Events. We have at- tended Governor’s Honor's Programs, Girls' State, and have been Outstanding Teenagers. All of our accomplishments have been possible because of our inspiring parents, our devoted teachers, and our dependable friends. As we approach the end of our high school days, we look back over the past twelve (or 13) years with joy and happi- ness and a bit of sadness. We look forward with hope that the inspiration and spirit of Irwin County High School will forever guide us toward complete fulfillment of our goals and aims. We, the Seniors of the 1971 Graduating Class, salute Irwin County High. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Class of 1971, from the communities of Irwinville, Mystic, Lax, Holt, Frank, Osierfield, and Lands’Cross- ing, in the town of Ocilla, the county of Irwin, the State of Georgia, the United States of America, the continent of North America, and the Western Hemisphere, and being of sound mind and body after twelve or more years of school, do hereby proclaim and issue our last will and testament. Finally, we do hereby name and appoint as sole executors of this our last will and testament, our principal, our counselor, and our senior advisor, Mr. Fussell, Mrs. Broadhurst, and Mrs. McDaniel. In witness whereof we the class of 1971, the testators have set our hand and seal on this first day of May in the year nineteen hundred seventy-one. Witnessed By: Flip Wilson Under Dog Dr. Marcus Welby, M. D. 154 Class Prophecy of 1971 What: Class of 1971 Reunion Time: June 2, 1981 Place: Ocilla Coliseum As former class members of '71 assemble in the Ocilla Coliseum they are made aware that they represent the new generation of businessmen, executive, sports figures, inventors, community leaders, and taxpayers. They know that they have been responsible for many of the changes not only in Ocilla but the States and the Nation. As the members watch the entrance of each member you can hear whispers of the age and physical appearance that respective members have undergone. We hear the former class president Sharon Barber, calling the class to order. To aid Sharon in maintaining order we hear Junvenile Judge, Cathy Griffin, reminding the members of the penalities that can be imposed on them for disturbing the peace. The members are asked to rise in thanks to Raymond Otis and Vernon Wells, owners of the Ocilla Coliseum, and the Wells Otis Chargers for permitting the class to use their facilities. Also employed there is Head Cheerleader, Camille Davis, who has seniority in cheerleading experience now! Remembering that we were a great class of sports several have received national recognition for their achievements. Tommy Hudson won the Atlanta 500 last year while Diane Wright and Sue Roberts drove their Red Chargers for honors in the Tri-State Demolition Derby. Dwight Law rode the horse Scared Stiff' to win the Kentucky Derby in 1976! All of you who watched the Macy Parade this past Thanksgiving felt a great measure of pride as one of our own, Rosalyn Johnson, head majorette of the Irwin County Professional Band was selected as the National Solo Twirler Champion. And did you see that Leon Alligood playing the Trumpet as Rosalyn twirled. In his off season, William Cook, famous slalom water skier champion, gives instructions of how to ski on stumps out at Cook's Lake. Art Davis is still making money by using his foot (instead of head) by punting for the Atlanta Raiders. We have a world-wide heavy weight Kensu-wrestler. The match was between Vivian Merritt and Annie King. Vivian was declared the winner by a LK! (Lucky Kick) Robert Brannen is a well-known tennis player. He, like Spiro Agnew, (household word of the 1970's) has the technique of hitting his opponent with the ball. Between the Pugh Twins, Annease and Lynnease, the U. S. won its first gold medal in the field of unique- ness of frame and body work but it took both of them! Several of our class members as a result of Senior activities are now the owners and wholesale dealers of the Invisible Paint Company. The contents of the paint was formulated by Howard Paulk and Warren Hen- 155 derson, the instructor, who holds a paint seminar every fall with present seniors attending. To assist Warren in showing the Seniors how to paint the numbers (7 and 1), are Sharon Barber and Wanda Brown. With the Women’s Lib movement having begun in 1970 we see many of our class members have achieved equality regardless of their sex. Today, it is Cindy Hudson's Chevrolet Company and she stays in business for to date. Cousin John has his 21st Chevelle. We understand that after Troy Smith buried his Volkswagon that even he gave his business to Cindy. Too, Tommy Roberts has to have a new green Chevy every year since he has replaced the Green Hornet. Also the owners of a family business, Ross Construction, are Brenda and Allen Ross. Allen is the president while Brenda is the bulldozier driver and treasurer. Hazel Ann Sumner al- ways did demand equality plus to prove her position. She is now leader of Ocilla Women's Lib and has em- ployed Teddy Mixon, former brilliant English student, as her secretary. The business world certainly got several of our female class members. Here we see Chanda Davis's Shoe Store has replaced Aaron's in Albany. She really stepped up the ladder of success with her own shoes! Now for all of you who want the best in tires visit Patricia Jay and Patricia Johnson's Double Pat Tire Company. Two members, Daniel Lockett and Milton Anderson have a family-in-law trade by being tri-owners of the Ocilla Machine Shop. Oh’, the other owner is the Bank of Ocilla. Just recently. Alton Sneed was proclaimed as Mr. Electronic of the Year and Llewellyn Powell. Mr. Mechanic. They received this recognition due to their collision and production of a substance called Allewtonelloposeederond Electromanetic Machenama- chine. Can you think of a better word to call that sensational invention? Congress has just recently appropriated $5 billion for the Lou Vem Pacer, the world's fastest jet. Congra- tulations Lou Vern. Can you imagine that some of our class members chose an educational career (the feinks). Esther Farmer is now Dean of Men. The Dean of Ben Hill-Irwin Vocational Tech is Donnis Youghn and he employed Billy York as his mechanic instructor. (We hear John. Tommy, and Troy are still enrolled in this course - they just don't make the cars as good as they used to!) Eloise Andrews, world renowned artist, is now serving as of the New York An Gallery where her masterpiece, The Innocent hangs. Leona Dennard and Sallie Harris, professors at Harvard, are now doing private tutoring to help former class members, Carolyn Rainey and Maria Wilcon, so they can graduate this year. They must have left their brains at ICHS in 1971. 156 Mike Sirmans became a physcist and recently gave the world a new formula which shows the amount of impact caused by a cart loaded with brick pushed by an individual when it hits a wall! (C B I=B) Fletcher Tucker has replaced Mrs. Thompson as Typing instructor. He offers this course in lieu of legible writing in such courses as English or government. He still has to leave at the end of 3rd period to get back to his farmwork. With much experience of working on the annual, Beth Connell has now become the editor of the NEW OC1LLA TIMES. Also Carol Carmichael features a column in the TIMES each week on the Problems of Marriage and Parenthood.” Teresa Davis is the Sales Promotor where she achieved a record of subscriptions. 1791. Didn't she get her numbers backwards! Related to the problems of marriage, Linda Harper, has her shingle with the title of Marriage Counselor hung at her office, the former Ocilla Community House. The President and Editor of the magazine, HOW TO PLAY AND LEARN AT THE SAME TIME, is Gregory Miller. He always did like to play! One of our class members, Warren Mixon, is both a dentist and gold prospector. Can you imagine how he does all his work in the same office - he always was a rounder. Not too many of our class members chose the Armed Services as a career since U. S. Representatives Byron Graham and Ralph Johnson pushed the bill through Congress providing for a volunteer army. However, Roy Grantham, has already advanced to Commander of the Marine Corp. In his 3 mile race with Robert Griffin, he won by running it in 2:59 so Robert is still in boot training. We sure wish he could have gotten out of those boots in time to attend this gala event. Two members chose civilian rather than military service and could not be present today. Cynthia and Diane Williams are members of the Peace Corps in Africa. They can't get homesick! Then some had the audacity to choose work in the government. Johnny Morris as Chairman of the Highway Department has finally four-laned the Ocilla-Alapaha road and no one can understand his reasoning for want- ing this project completed. However, Bob Cargile, a State Trooper on the road, says he sees several class members going South often. Brenda Collins has a tremendous responsibility of keeping the guard tight at the Irwin County Public Work Camp since prisoners cannot be punished in a cruel and unusual manner (8th Amendment) such as work. We all well remember our class as being very religious. We are glad to have Mother Dale Tucker, Nun of the Convent and Buddha Danny Hudson. Following along this same course was Marvin Paulk, who is the famous gospel pianist and has his own group, Marvin's Church Wagon. 157 We always did like to be seen so several of ours entered the field as actors and actresses in movies and television. Deborah Jenkins is now playing the leading role in movie, Run Where You Can, Walk When You Can't . The highrated TV series, The Unseparable, Unspeakable, and Unsmiling Three stars Gwen Gra- ham, Janice Jenkins, and Linda Fowler. Can you imagine the action after the show between these three? The show for your little youngster to watch now is narrated by Sue Dowdy of the Howdy Doody Dowdy Show . And even Gail Simmons settled down to an ordinary and average job, the weather girl of WALB. The Ed Sullivan Show has been replaced by the Bailey Dickens Show which features Jerry Edwards and Danny Harper as the 1980's Laurel and Hardy. Several of our class are prominent leaders and businessmen and women right here in our own Ocilla. Gene Paulk is the new police chief and does he ride his motorcycle as a chief not a racer! Melvin Bess is quite a boss now as manager of the grocery bag boys down at Ocilla Foodland. A new exercising salon, the Mar- vell, is now operated in Ocilla. She has as assistants Harriett McSwain, The Before , and Jean Tucker. The After . Since Vicki Nolan is still available she has now assumed the position of Hospital Admini- strator in hopes to catch one of those rich ones with two feet sliding. Several of the class have replaced former teachers. Mrs. Chapman is now Miss Vicki Wiley, Miss Hawthorne is Miss Mavis Moss and who would you think is principal of ICHS - none other than Mr. Michael Price, who has Vicki Vickers as his Bouncer . We must have been the last class of good students. Johnny Hopson is still attracted to the school but now he is charge of landing the student's air craft. The guidance counselor, Carolyn Litman, organized a Silence for Sense Committee among the students and appointed Iris Mizell as its administrator. So far, Iris has not been able to be heard over the students. Now Joyce Joyner has become the chiropractor and we hear she can really get those joints back in place. Who should be her nurse, no other than Tony Griffin! (Evidence of the Women's Lib.) Two of our most illustrious students, Jesse Twilley and Sammy Guy, we have not been able to trace for it seems they were so happy to get their diplomas they have been Running Bears ever since. Linda Washington went to live in her namesake, Washington, D. C., where she has a nursery of Cherry Trees. Bonnie (Fletcher) is still looking for Clyde! Yes, we do have one author among us and that is Lamar Howell whose present top seller is THE ROYAL AND ROYALETTES OF THE CLASS OF '71. Billy Royal thinks he should collect the royalties and still hasn't sought a job. As our last class member, Ronnie Wheeler, is introduced he wants us to announce that all of you in need of a test or if the world needs a rest from you, come on over to his home-sweet-home. The Wheeler Mental Institute. They provide many services here such as a testing program (guaranteed I. Q. 's of 150) administered by no other than Roxy Wingate. We don't want to forget the cameraman of our class, Ken Sutton, who has filmed this entire event with the promise from 1BC that it will be shown as a World Premier Movie next fall and we know it will be worth watching us, the actors. 159 BANK OF OCILLA Your Friendly Bank First in Service Member of F.
