1970 CHIEFTAIN Irwin County High School Ocilla, Georgia Foreword This Senior Class of 1969-70 marks the end of the decade of the Sixties and the beginning of the decade of the Seventies. Our years at I.C.H.S. have been filled with events which shall always be memories. We, the Staff of this year’s Chieftain, have made every effort to compile an annual which we hope will help you, in later years, to re- live the social, athletic, and scholastic events and to recall the joys, sorrows, and dreams which we shared. We sincerely hope that it will always be one of your most cherished posses- sions; and, if your future life in enriched by its contents, then we will have achieved our goal. Although the seniors will greet this event with mixed emotions, the juniors will be delighted at the prospect of gaining senior status, and each succeeding class will rejoice in finishing another year toward that goal. But as spokesman for the 1969-1970 Student Council, I wish to charge the student body of next year with certain individual responsibilities. Take pride in your school. It is one of the best organized schools in this area. Take pride in your subjects. The work you do now will some day pay big dividends. Make the most of every opportunity available. But even more, we will treasure the shining example you set for us in your daily living and in your service to your Lord. But be- fore we go, we'd like to tell you a little about our past. For most of us our school days began in September of 1958 with a bang. Miss Flannagan went around Tapping some of us on the head with a huge pencil to see if our heads were empty. (Unfortunately they were.) Miss Dickens had a surprise for her misbehaving children. Each culprit had to walk to the front of class, hold out his hand, and wait while Miss Dickens opened her drawer and secured her paddle. That year, with all of us Dick ran a million miles and Sally did look, look, look. Next year we breezed through the second grade with our progressive intellects. In the third grade we learned to write in real writing. (Too bad they didn't teach Mrs. Gibson too.) We also played in the Rhythm Band that year. We got rhythm then, and we ain't lost it yet, kids. The fourth grade brought the tragedy of long division. (We wish they had taught us the tragedies of Barney, Mabel, and Virginia too. We'd have been a lot better off.) In the fifth grade we really got down to the nitty gritty in social studies. Columbus discovered America! How about that - we thought we found it by ourselves. Science made our sixth year of school complete. Half of us were astronauts, jumping into orbit from the swings, after we got them going high enough, and making our re-entry to our good old earth too soon. We had a class science project that year, and we've been budding scientists ever since. Only graduation from that little kids' school could slow us down. We began the seventh grade with a few doubts and a lot of new friends from other schools. But we were shocked to find that our status had dropped to almost nothing. We were no longer looked on with adoring eyes, but with scornful eyes, as those little ole seventh graders. The eighth grade raised our standing very little, but many of us still became outstanding in the Junior High. We joined clubs and participated in sports. Each of us had at least two new romances a week. We weren't going to be left behind in this moving world. But we looked forward to getting into High School where important things were happening, and where we could be human beings again. But if we had thought we were low in the seventh grade, we were in for a shock in our freshman year because we became the lowest scum of the whole school. We were absolutely lost in the big halls with so many people and so many classrooms. Where's Room 9? Oh, no, there's the last bell! Help! I've been pushed into a corner, and 1 can't get back into traffic! But we were soon on our way; remem- ber, we were in High School. We joined clubs, tried out for sports, and did intellectual science projects. Our freshman year also brought sadness at the loss of our beloved classmate. We had begun our High School days full of anticipation, only to find that there were alligators in the swamps. Granny Harper taught us to beware of dangling participles, Mrs. Gibson swamped us with a vocab- ulary list that sank us, and Coach Billotte blasted us out of our boats. Everybody was out to get us, and we knew it. By now we had lettered in sports, represented our class on the Homecoming Court, won awards in clubs, and subjects, participated in the Governor's Honors Program, and been Outstanding Teenagers. We had been officers in clubs and represented our school at state events. But we still haven't learned that we must not look at our fingers when we're typing, that three teaspoons make a tablespoon, and that we shouldn't say ain’t. We just haven’t had time for such minute things. Biology and chemistry surely have influenced our lives, though. We have tried to catch Barney and dissect him to find out what he is made of, but he has been just too stubborn and too fast. We surely have gotten even in Chemistry though, for what the school has done to us. We've made some stifling concoctions that have almost knocked the whole school out of commission. Fires and explosions have become everyday occurrences. But then what is Chemistry without a little excitement? Some of our cherished beliefs have been shaken, however. Can you imagine the gall of Mrs. Brown in telling us that George Washington didn’t chop down the cherry tree? That the world started before we were bom? Hmph! She never convinced us of that. But if it did, it wasn't important. Government was a wipe-out. If anybody appoints any more Cabinet Members, it’s just too bad because we’ve already learned all we're going to. But since we've learned the President’s oath, we are well prepared to take over that job now. Right now we still have writer’s cramp from writing term papers and themes. But after all our worthy efforts, Mrs. Cheshier said, she ain't taught none of her classes no English yet', and she don't expect to teach us none neither. (One thing Mrs. Cheshier did teach was the difference between Hell, yes and Hell, no, and It's hot as hell, and It's cold as hell. Seniors, remember that great lesson? It's the only one we paid attention to.) ve have suffered many things such as knots on the head from previous senior rings, football knees, and falling backboards from science projects. Through some miracle or other we have all survived twelve years of school, or thirteen, or fourteen. We have changed from little ignorant kids into big ignorant kids. Yes. Seniors, we have finally made it. What began as a small battle in the seventh grade turned into a major war in High School. But we have defeated the enemy and won our diplomas, we hope. And we have really left our mark on Irwin County High School, (especially with the writing on the wall ). As we near the end and glance back over the years, we remember with warm feelings our teachers, parents, and friends who have all had an important part in making us the citizens we are today. To those we owe many thanks for tolerating us. guiding us. forgiving us, and sharing with us our happiest and saddest moments. Though we look to the future, we also look back on the past twelve years with mixed emotions and wonderful memories. We carry with us these memories, our school's confidence in us. and the hope that God will keep us in his care. Irwin County High School, we the Seniors of 1970, salute you. Last Will and Testament We, the class of 1970, in the town of Ocilla, the county of Irwin, and the state of Georgia, being as mentally competent as possible after four or more years of Virginia, Barney, and Frank, do hereby make this our last will and testament. We feel that our brilliant record and our unusual achievements will live after us, but not wishing to take any chances, we leave a history written streets of Ocilla. surrounding trees, the water tower, various signs, the walls of the building ... !
