ICHS Its People . . . Its Activities . . . Its Accomplishments . ICHS is the place where students gain a foresight into the future, and test the ability and desire to achieve high goals. Memory of this place would fade quickly but for the wonderful people it housed and the events in which they participated so creditably and warmly. 2 THE PEOPLE It is the people at ICHS who make the school what it is. The parents and Board of Education who build and maintain; the administration and faculty who lead and supervise; and the students enthusiastic in heart and conduct; all making ICHS a place of worthy accomplishment. A variety of student types make up the enrollment of any school. The vivacious, the beautiful, the studious, the unconcerned, the leader, the pious. All have their niche in the ICHS student body. 6 ACTIVITIES The activities at ICHS are born of healthy exuberance and ambition. These are the activities where students relax and enjoy being together, the clubs where projects are planned and carried out, the pro- grams where piety, patriotism, respectability and loyalty are stirred. The ideals of ICHS culminate in its activities and become a part of its traditions. 9 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Mr. and Madam President PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION OFFICERS Mrs. Clint Ash ley--Mrs. Rebecca Baltese--Mrs. Jimmy Powell--Mrs. Paul Newton, President. The sophisti- cated seniors making the most of their last year, seeming eager to be gone but saddened with the thought of leaving; the hopeful juniors becoming more confident; the halting yet impatient sophomores; and the freshmen whose capabil- ities are not yet known but will soon be put to the test as they take their place at ICHS. We have learned much while climbing the ladder to maturity. Our eyes have been opened to the true value of education. We have planned, we have worked, and we have participated. In 1966 we go our separate ways. We must take our place in life and begin to use the knowledge we have accumulated, for the destiny of the world is in our hands. Larry Wheeler, Jack Johnson, Danny Woods, Tommy Harper, and Harold Roberts. 105 At the end of their junior year Hugh Carver, Teresa Tomberlin, Jane Rodgers, Ann Newton, and Gary Jones were presented with Certificates of Merit by the University of Georgia for commendable achievement during three years in high school. They were rewarded for being among the top 5% of their class. Ann Newton and Vickie Freeman received a high honor in being selected by the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Legion to attend Girls State in 1965. Mike Ashley and Brenda Sutton participated in the Governor's Honor Program, summer 1965. This is an honor which comes to few students. 106 Larry Wheeler received the Woodmen of the World award for proficiency in American history. Brenda Sutton was crowned Irwin County Sweet Potato Princess. Three seniors from ICHS were chosen by the National Science Foundation to participate in summer seminars held in colleges throughout the state. Students from ICHS who studied in colleges were: Jane Rodgers, Emery University; Hugh Carver, University of Georgia; and Ann Newton, West Georgia College. Miss Georgia Selects Miss Chieftain, Maid of Honor, and Chieftain Maids Miss Mary Jane Yates Miss Georgia 1965 Savannah, Georgia Dear Miss Wingate: Irwin County High School is certainly doing its share in upholding the reputation that Georgia has attained as the state of beautiful girls. You should be proud of having so many attractive girls in your school. My decision was made after a long study of the photographs submitted and I only wish that I could have met each of the candidates so that I would not have to rely completely on the magic of the camera. Thank you for giving me the opportunity of being a part of your 1966 yearbook and I wish for all of the '66 graduates much success and happiness. Sincerely yours, Mary Jane Yates Miss Georgia 1965 108 Mary Gail Fussell Suellen Darden Delores White 110 During halftime at the Atkinson County game, before a capacity crowd, Betty Sutton was crowned 1965 Home- coming Queen.
