THE CHIEFTAIN IRWIN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL OCILLA, GEORGIA VOLUME 15 FOREWORD As our school days come to their close, we pause to look back upon the friends and the happiness we have had. This year has been one filled with many experiences which we shall never forget. The joys, the sorrows, the fun, and the hard work—these are all parts of our memories. In the 1963 Chieftain we have tried to preserve for you through pictures these wonderful memories of Irwin County High School. EDITOR CONTENTS DEDICATION 4 IN MEMORIAM 5 BEAUTIES 6 FACULTY 16 ACTIVITIES 24 SPORTS 46 SUPERLATIVES 58 SENIORS 72 JUNIORS 86 SOPHOMORES 96 FRESHMEN 108 JUNIOR HIGH 118 ADVERTISING 130 D E D I C A T I O N The 1963 CHIEFTAIN staff takes pride in dedicating this annual to a teacher who has been promoted along with the seniors of 1963. She first taught them in the seventh grade, next she was one of their junior sponsors, and this year she moved up to the senior class with them. Throughout she has been a hard but fair taskmaster, a speech writer deluxe, a willing participator in all activities, a friend and confident--in short, a Star Teacher. The 1963 CHIEFTAIN is grate- fully dedicated to MRS. VIRGINIA CHESHIER. 4 Connie: To You To you whose spirit we hold dear, To you whose smile is still so clear, To you whose sparkling eyes did shine, To you whose friendship was so fine, To you who now live at God's side, This page in memory is inscribed. Despite a season record of 2-7-1, the team, led by Captain Paul Cheshier and Co-Captain Larry Harper, met each opponent vigorously, and suffered its defeats primarily because of the mistakes of a youthful squad. The Indians were probably stronger this year on defense than on offense. Zim Royal was leading scorer, with 24 points, while Larry Johnson and Walter Tyler each scored 18 points. Walter Sumner led the squad in total offense, gaining 534 yards running and passing. Outstanding in line play were Paul Cheshier, Pat Hodnett, Larry Johnson, Wayne Pierce, and Skeet Roberts. Outstanding backfield men were Larry Harper, Kayo McNease, Zim Royal, Walter Sumner, and Walter Tyler. 48 Paul Cheshier was chosen All-State Class A tackle for noteworthy play on offense and defense. With only three seniors departing and eighteen lettermen returning, the Indians, under the excellent coaching of mentors Harvey McNease, Ralph Cook, Ronald Luke, and Andy Pittman have a great poten- tial for the '63 season. 1962 RESULTS Coffee County 38 Turner County 7 Berrien County 0 Bacon County 26 Hahlra 7 Jeff Davis 33 Cook County 33 Blackshear 34 Crisp County 6 Fitzgerald 21 Irwin County 7 Irwin County 6 Irwin County 6 Irwin County 7 Irwin County 25 Irwin County 7 Irwin County 0 Irwin County 21 Irwin County 6 Irwin County 6 49 Paul Cheshier Larry Harper Pat Hodnett Walter Tyler Jimmy Lee Joe Stone Jimmy Howell Don Busbin Glenn Thompson Mel Meeks Skeet Roberts Larry Johnson Walter Sumner Kayo McNease Ronald Harper Vernon Pettis Benny Rowell Tommy Tucker BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Irwin High Indians of Coach Ronald Luke were led to a 8-14 season by the scoring of Larry Johnson, who averaged 16.5 points a game. Other leading scorers were Jimmy Lee (9. 5), Walter Sumner (9.1), Carroll Roberts (4. 9), and David Lee Dill (4.1). Other lettermen were Damon Ross, David McCranie, and Buddy Stokes. Ross was the only senior on the squad. The Indians were runners-up in the Fitzgerald Christmas tournament and ad- vanced to the second round of the sub-regional tourney. 52 Larry Johnson David Lee Dill Damon Ross Carroll Roberts Walter Sumner David McCranie B” TEAM GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach Ralph Cook's girls compiled a record of 8 victories and 10 losses during the 1962-63 season. Senior Mary Francis Royal led the Squaws in scoring with 224 points, while senior guard Rosemary Daniel was the team's leading rebound- er.
