95 OAs OSCEOLAN Published By SENIOR CLASS OCILLA HIGH SCHOOL OCILLA, GEORGIA PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE From the Principal's Desk: First, may I congratulate you on the completion of a very fine annual— I also want to thank you for this opportunity to write a small section for the annual. You have done a good job, and I'm sure you will treasure this book for many years to come. You have, in your senior year, reached the last mile- stone in your public school education. Maybe sometime the going was rough and you felt like saying, Oh, what's the use I , but now aren't you glad you pushed on? As you leave O.H.S., we of the faculty shall be watch- ing with interest your progress. Today we are proud of you—may we always be proud of you as alumni. It is my hope that Ocilla High School, whether it be called Irwin County High School, Ocilla High or any other name, may always merit your love and admiration. There are many things that you can do for your Alma Mater. I am sure you will find your job and do it well. For having been here, you are a part of us and we are a part of you. With these mutual bonds, let us work for a bigger and better Ocilla, Irwin County, and State of Georgia I Sincerely your principal, John B. Burks J We, the Seniors of 1950-51 with conscience clear dedi- cate this—our 1950-51 Osceolan—to our beloved sponsor: MISS MARY ELOISE PRUDE. To her a toast of the heartiest kind is raised. Not only for what she has done for us but for her love, and kind- ness, toward us during our Senior year. To know her is to love her. So, we the Seniors of 1950-51 say thanks” to some one we all know and appreciate, and who has helped to make our Senior year a success— MISS MARY ELOISE PRUDE JOHN B. As we entered O.H.S. on September 4, 1947, we were excited and thrilled by the thought that we were in high school. Our principal, Mr. M. S. MacDonald, welcomed us and did much to make us feel at ease. We had a happy and profitable year. In 1948 as sophomores we had fun initiating the freshmen into clubs and other activ- ities. We carried on the work of getting an education and enjoyed this year very much. On September 5, 1949, we entered O.H.S. feeling very enthusiastic over the coming year. We had looked forward to this year as we were given the responsibility of giving the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. This was a success and everyone had a good time. We looked forward to the school term of 1950 more than any previous year for this was the highlight of our school career. Our class now numbered seventy-four. The Osceolan, was our project for the year. We have worked hard, but we have enjoyed working with Miss Prude, our sponsor, on this worthy project. We are also looking for- ward to the class play with anticipation. Our efforts throughout our school career will be climaxed by the class trip to Washington in the spring. We think our high school days have been well supervised and feel much indebted to our teachers and advisors throughout these years, who have taught us so faithfully. Those of us who have plans to continue our education in college and those who plan our way in the world, know we have a good foundation to build on. MARY JANE McMILLAN Class Historian CLASS POEM We the Seniors of '51, Can say with conscience clear, That these school years at O.H.S. Will always be held dear, To you our teachers and classmates, It’s hard to say good-bye, We’ve been together these many years, And though of parting may bring tears, But when these school days are over, Tho our ways apart may lie, Still we’ll love and cherish, Thoughts of Ocilla High. _____________________________________II Emory Barrineau Bobbie Jean Carver L. It is in the heart of South Georgia, the center of Georgia's best farm lands. It is located along the Dixie Short Route High- way 104 miles from Macon, and 165 miles from Savannah. No more favorable conditions can be found for the development of any section than exists in this county—fertile land, abundant rainfall, and long pleasant summers. Cotton, corn, tobacco and peanuts are particularly adapted to the soil in our county, but there are a variety of other crops produced here every year. The growing season extends over a period of 260 days, and under ordinary conditions will produce three crops during one year. Ocilla is named after the celebrated Indian patriot and warrior, Osceola. He was born in Georgia near the Chattahoochee River, in 1804, and died in prison at Fort Moultrie, S. C, January 30, 1838. Tradition says that an old white man (whost name cannot be learned) had befriended the Florida Indians on many occasions, and having lived among them, knew their sorrows as well as their language and customs. This old man later moved to the large county of Irwin in Georgia. When Osceola and other chieftains were seized by General Jesup under a flag of truce and thrown in a damp dungeon at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Florida, (and later imprisoned at Fort Moultrie in Charleston, S.C.), their warriors sought counsel from their old friend in Georgia. He could offer no assistance; but, when it was known that Osceola would die of illness and of a broken heart for his people, and that he asked his comrades to steal his body away and hide it where the white man could never find it, this faithful friend offered them six feet of earth for Osceola in the land where he was born. Accordingly, when an opportunity presented itself, Osceola's body was stolen from the grave under the guns at Fort Moultrie, Charleston, S. C, and borne along water ways to a pine covered hill side overlooking a pond near the home of this old white gentleman in Irwin County, Georgia. This story passed from lip to lip and the site was known as Osceola Pond until a Mr. Henderson moved here from Worth County and established a post office in 1897, naming it Ocilla, because it was easier to spell. This pond is located some two hundred yards from the Dixie Highway on the left going to Douglas, and has gradually filled with earth and decaying vegetation until it is scarcely more than a dense group of cypress, pine and willow trees.
