They had six returning starters: Cheryl Cano, Tracy Birdwell, Teresa Martinez, and Nikki Winovich. Tracy Birdwell and Nikki Winovich were this year's captains. O I This years J.V. Softball team was coached by Mr. Tierney. The teams co-captains were Kim Barker and Theresa Leyva. The veteran players returning from last year were Theresa Leyva, Kim Barker, Laura Hollenshead, Caroline McKernon, and Eileen McLain. Coach Tierney said he expected the team to do very well even though it was very young and inexperienced. He felt the areas that needed extra work were third base, catching and pitching. The strong areas were hitting with Theresa Leyva and Laura Hol- lenshead, and speed with Michelle Knowles and Tina Houston. The general opinion of the players was that they would take the M.V.A.L. Cham- pionship, making it the sixth victory in the last seven years. , . Michelle Akers led the girls in Cross Country run- ning competition. She placed second in the Mission Valley Athletic League finals and advanced to the North Coast Section 4-A championship meet. Stacy Bolivia placed fifth in the MVAL finals and also advanced to the NCS-4-A championship meet. Kathy Tilton also did well in the MVAL finals by placing ninth.
