GIRLS V RSITY SUCCER The Irvington Viking Girls Soccer Team got off to a good start by capturing the championship of the first round of play. Top players include Kerry Richards and Angela Rendon on offense and Pam Manriquez, Mi- chelle Mayo, and Denise Hernandez on defense. According to Coach Shirley Evans this was the finest team she has ever had! The girls were skilled, and worked well together. She felt the team was balanced offensively and defensively. Mrs. Evans also stated that she was pleasantly surprised with the performance of So- nia Juarez who has done an excellent job at halfback and Lynette Hernandez who is at goalie for her first time and has done a superb job. They also attended many pre-sea- son track events and did very well. Although the team was rather small in size, they still had an outstanding year. This year Irvington had a bunch of fine talented girls on it's Girls Tennis Team. The coach for the team was Miss Hammes, who was one heck of a coach. The team captain was Laura Gouldthrope, who has played tennis for Irvington for four years. Awards were distributed at the Awards Banquet. They were: Most Improved, which was awarded to Debbie Stelleg Most Dedicated, which was awarded to Arends Hughes, and Most Valuable, which was awarded to Shellie Marshall. The number one single was Arenda Hughes, number two Beth Brooks, number three Shellie Marshall, and number four Laura Gouldthrope and Margarete Young. The number one doubles were Margarete Young, Teresa Parra, Tammy Silva, and Cathy La- chenmyer.
