The girls tied for a very good third place finish. Leading the team was the team captain Jill Tipton who was voted Most Outstanding and Dedicated , and Lynn Cadle who recieved Most Valuable Player . The top doubles team consisted of Cathy Ferrau and Shelly Marshall, who did very well as a combined team effort. These girls have improved quite well since last year, and will probably keep improving in the years to come. 113

The 1980 Girls Gymnastics team was small in number but mighty in spirit. Mrs. Mariann Spooner coached the team and Amber Dean was chosen as the team Captain. ln De- cember, the girls held their first annual Cartwheel-A-Thon to raise money for a new set of uneven parallel bars and a new vaulting board. The group achieved the goal and the new equipment has served them well. When asked what they gained from going out for the team, a variety of responses were re- cieved. They all felt it helped to develop self-confidence and team spirit. They stated that Gymnastics also offered the challenge and experience of competition. Cathy Kellogg, Top row, Coach Boternbrood, Tammy Lerch. Varsity Irvington volleyball was at its finest this year. The team won the MVAL Championships with a 6 and 1 record. They de- feated American and Mission in the Shaughnessey Playoffs to earn the right to represent the MVAL at the NCS Cham- pionships at Cal-State Hayward. Irvington also dominated the MVAL with 4 first team all-league selections--Vickie Ebbler, Mary Giovannoni, Terrie MacDonald, and Tammy Lerch. Margie Hay earned 2nd team all-league honors. Cathy Kellogg, Cassandra Clerkley, and Nikki Winovich played outstanding throughout the year in the super team effort. J.V. lrvington's J.V. team also won the MVAL Championship with a 6 and 1 record. This was xl will-Q 'Fixing' ta the second year in a row that has happened. Leading the team to victory was Michelle Brown, Cheryl Cano, Rena Wack, Barbie Mac- Donald, and Veronica Mitrick, all Sophomores.
