RASHOMON Rashomon is a play in two acts which deals with an adult theme. The action takes place in Kyoto, Japan, about a thousand years ago at the great Ra- shomon Gate. Before the time of the play, it was the largest gate in Kyoto, the ancient capitol of Japan. It was 106 feet wide and 26 feet deep, its stone wall rising 75 feet. With the decline of West Kyoto, the gate fell into bad re- pair and became a decayed relic with an unsavory reputation, a hideout for thieves and a dump for unclaimed corpses. The play opens with the priest, who is leaving the church because he doesn't understand mans actions, a poor woodcutter, who tries to convince the priest not to leave, and the wigmaker, a cynic who couIdn't care one way or another. The priest and the woodcut- ter are retelling the tale of their exper- ience ofthe bloody murder ofa proud Samurai, by the legendary thief Toja- moru, after the rape of his wife and the testimonies of the parties involved. Throughout the story the scenes filter back and forth to the forest and the court, in which the murder is re-en- acted through the action of charactors and through the story of the wood cut- ter and the priest. OLIVER l First position? The musical Oliver is set in the 1800's. The story is about orphan boys who just barely survive with little food or com- fort. The orphanage is run by Widow Corning and Mr. Bum- ble, Oliver, being hungry, approaches Mr. Bumble asking for more food. Because he asked for more, he is punished by being sold to Mr. Sowerberry, the undertaker. The next day, he runs away and is picked up by the Artful Dodger. He is then taken to Fagin's Kitchen, where he joins Fagin and his boys. The boys go off on a pick-pocket expedition and Oliver is captured for looking guilty. News reaches Fagin and tav- ern owner, Bill Sikes, that Oliver has been taken to the home of a rich old gentlemen. They send Nancy to retreive Oliver, but the scheme to grab him back fails. Sikes grabs Oliver and after a chase, he is shot and killed. Oliver is restored to his benefactor. Fagin minus boys, home and money reflects on the sad stateyof affairs as the play closes. 104 Say your sorry! Do you need some help?
