Charlie Gutierrez. Larry Putnam. Kim Morales. The I Witness is the Irvington High School newspaper. It was established during the 73- 74 school year, after a four year period of no school paper. It is published by the student body of the Journalism class. Mrs. Carolyn Finn as the advisor, and is distributed to the entire student body free of charge. The printing of the paper is a joint effort between Dar Printers in Newark and Irvington High School facilities. The I Witness editorial policy is to inform and educate the school and the community by exercising the right of freedom of speech and expression. 90

Rafaela Tizoc is here from Mexico and is in the eleventh grade. Two years ago Rafaela could not speak any English but now is doing just fine as she is doing with her studies. The progress is just tremendous. The reason why she is here is to learn to speak English and to graduate from high school. After she plans to return to her own country. Fernando is eighteen and a junior at Irvington. He comes from Nicaragua, where he has a older brother and two sisters. In Nicaragua he enjoyed coming home with friends and playing pool, after he helped around the house. Now Fernando is staying with his Uncle and Aunt. He now enjoys going to car races, and playing and watching baseball. After graduating he plans to go to college in California. Andrea Dahl came to Irvington from a suburb in Hamburg, Germany where she lived with her parents and two brothers. Andrea is now living with the Sebesta family. She is seventeen and a junior. Andrea enjoys all kinds of sports and has participated in G.A. A.-gymnastics and is going to continue in other sports the rest of the year. Before going back to Germany Andrea says that she hopes to see the ocean, Disneyland, Los Angeles and some other states. When she returns home Andrea will go back to school for two more years. After graduation she hopes to become a teacher for the mentally retarded, and would also like to spend a year in an undevel¬ oped country and visit more of Europe. Carmen On gpin is an exchange student from the Phillipine Islands. She is now a senior at Irvington. Her new American family is the Claybourne Stephens ' . Carmen goes to school with her American brother. Rick, and sister, Rhonda, after school they all enjoy doing things together. 89

The Rune is an organization in which teachers and students can express themselves through poems, stories and art work. The members of the Rune Staff select the best literature.
