introduction Irvington High School, the most modern plant yet built in the Fremont area, opened its doors for the first time on September 11, 1961 to a student body of 1400. It is hard to imagine what was going through the minds of the first Viking crew as they stepped onto their as yet unchristened ship. Many were thinking fondly of the friends they left behind at Washington; others were hurrying about, worriedly, trying to find the location of their classes. There was little attention given to the sea of responsibility before them as the unsteady and as yet untried ship prepared to embark upon its first voyage. The Vikings had been a mighty lot — bold and adventurous, — thundering their way across the northern continent. This mighty Viking was the symbol of the strength and unity of action Irvington High School hoped to possess. Could we do it? The only way to answer this question was to try — and try we did! The Vikings — students and faculty alike — hoisted anchor and set sail on an unchartered course in the true Viking spirit. Traditions were established, traditions that will remain when the original members of the Viking crew are meeting and conquering other challenges life places before them. Perhaps, in a decade or two, we may all look back at this first year, the year we became Vikings and remember — surely there are memories for all of us. And so, we present a treasure chest of memories for the first Irvington Vikings and for those that will follow us. Let us recall the first year — let us recall. THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE VIKING SHIP.
