Standing are: Janice Roof, Joe Moore, Pat Ramsey, LuRae Thomson, Dorles Perdue, Glorainne Farine, Janice Hunt and Wayne Wade. During the course of this year, many changes were made on the annual staff. Changes were made for a better Irving High School annual, better in the sense that the students would like it as well as yearbook iudges. New additions mark the book in this remodel- ing iob done so well by the staff. The Art De- partment, with the help of Karen Speaker, turned out the first cover designed by an Irving High School student. Karen also did the division pages, which make The Lair look snappy as a Tiger. The Activities Section, which is entirely new to Irving High School, shows life to the students as they see it during the school year. This section is made of picture stories of events that have maior effects that determine your school life. Many thanks goes to the staff that has listened to me constantly yelling each day to be original in thought as well as action. They have lived over it. Many people in the school have helped us to put this yearbook out-gathering information, typing, running errands and doing many other jobs that staff members have asked them to do. To The Lair staff, which has given their time and wits, goes the credit for this yearbook. FIRST YEAR IN AAAA CLASSIFICATION Irving's outmanned Tigers failed to win a dis- trict game in the 1956 season, but only district champion Wichita Falls was able to overpower the Tigers from the start. Lack of reserve strength, which showed itself in defensive let-downs in the second half of several contests and a weakened offense after an initial surge of power, was the team's undo- ing. Reserve strength really showed itself as a weakness as the Tiger's moved up to AAAA com- petition for the first time in the school's history. In 1951 Irving moved from A to AAA classifica- tion, the only school in the state to do so. During this unsuccessful attempt in AAAA this year, the Tigers lost four games by a single touch- down and played three opponents CGrand Prairie, 68 Denton and Arlingtonj off their feet for much of the game, but fell 52-6 to the mighty, Coyote team which played on near-equal basis in the state finals with Abilene. In other games Irving routed Mexia 51-7 and battled a 26-26 tie with Birdville after surging to a 19 point lead in the first five minutes of the game. Non-district foes to defeat the Tigers were Gainesville 13-7 and McKinney 20-12. District defeats were at the hands of Grand Prairie by 19-6, Denison 33-26, Sherman 20-14, Wichita Falls 52-6, Denton 19-6 and Arlington 33-13. While the season was not a success from the won-lost standpoint, Irving won the greatest battle of all-fighting to the end. Making their debut in Irving this year proved to be disastrous in the win- loss column, but it marked a new era in a rebuilding iob. Coaches Elvin Kays, Cedric Bettis and Head Coach Donald Orr Cpictured abovej started this task and should come up with a winner. One comment heard in town was we lost most ofthe games, but we built men, Tigers during this season were Lanney Money David Gray and Arthur Neece .,-v-v-naw-5, 112, vm, in li , t TRI-CAPTAINS of the Irving , V -Vx ' ' f... , iili Q l 4 Quan if I y it f ew. . 1' y ,fi gait rin 'x' Q 5 , r'a:e59r The managers are the work-horses of a football team and Irving managers were no exceptions. SUPEFUNTENDENT f IRVING, TEXAS OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT To THE STUDENT BODY OF IRVING HIGH SCHOOL: May I express my gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful manner in which each of you have accepted your responsibilities this year as school citizens of Irving High School. You are now enjoying the benefits of a free public school. As you continue your public school career I trust that you will realize that with every oppor- tunity there is a corresponding responsibility. Only in America will you find the freedom and opportunity that you are now enjoying. This freedom and oppor- tunity was not given to us - it was bought and paid for by the sacrifices of those who have gone before US. You only pass through public school once. Mistakes of yesterday are gone forever. Opportunities of tomorrow have not arrivedg therefore, live each day to the fullest. My heartiest best wishes are with you always. Sincerely yours, LMZ7 W. SUPERINTENDENT 1' IRVING, TEXAS TO TH STUDENT BODY OF IRVING HIGH SCHOOL: In just a few years from now boys and girls of the Irving High School will have reached, or very closely approached, a life's goal. In your effort to attain this goal there are at least three simple nmnstsn underlying success in any worthwhile endeavor. One must have a clear vision of what one wishes to accomplish in life. To be successful one must believe the potential of success is a part of their makeup. The earlier in life one starts preparing for a worth- while goal the more likely they are to successfully attain it. Best wishes to each of you. GOOD-BYE, IRVING HIGH As Seniors . . . how do we write down what this year has been, and what it has meant? ln truth, we can't. It meant a million things, with each day a farewell to the past and a wel- come to the future. lt meant remembering the Christmas Party, the Junior-Senior prom, Senior week, and having the President of the Student Council as a member of our class. lt meant re- membering fire drills, and queuing up in line in the cafeteria every day for lunch, and the sticky sweaty smell among the lockers in the gym. IOO Being a Senior was like having one foot in the past and the other in the future, for every course was taken with the thought in mind of what we'd be when we got out in the world. We heard speakers from twenty professions describe what it was like to be an engineer, a beautician, a pilot, a writer and to be in other positions. We were constantly talking of what college we'd attend, and what the entrance requirements were. Half here-half there, that's the way it was. And every minute of it-wonderful. . , , We fr' W -vvv f fy lf-. - , ff f X if X ,ff ,,f,, f4,,,5, v,1,,,4., 1, N u., JV ff. ty' 1113? , f X Y3iff3J'f lff5,fQ' ' 9 'nf' ?7.Q?Tf' 35154109 ALLEN, DON ALLEN, JANE ALLEN, ROY f' '52 Mains' 2 Nagy, 1 ANDERSON, JILL ARMSTRONG, ALAN AITERBERRY, GEORGE W!!! , ' V 1' dmv! 1 f 'V ' . They are, left to right: Sandra Burgess, Norman Reedus, Pat Hill, Bruce Usrey and Linda Adkins. PLANS FOR THE JUNIOR CLASS The year of '56-'57 was crowded with events of lasting importance for the Juniors of lrving High School. The events themselves will, prob- ably, pass into the limbo of forgotten things, but, the spirit of cooperation and achievement has been significant and influential. One of the first steps in this successful year was the election of outstanding leaders as class officers. With their guidance, the class made plans for the participation in all worthwhile ac- tivities for the entire year. Members of the Junior class were represented in all the fields of sports, as cheerleaders, on the student council and in the various school clubs. These clubs helped with civic drives for worthwhile causes. llb Climax of the year was the traditional Junior- Senior Banquet. It has long been the custom for the iuniors to finance and plan this annual spring affair. As early as last fall, they started the fi- nancial ball rolling, with the sales of fight rib- bons. Au Valentine dance and two assemblies gained momentum land money? for the big oc- casion. Make way, seniors-we are preparing to don your caps of glory! They are, left to right: Tommy Hendricks, Max Reese and Judy Walker, Absent when the picture was taken are Steve Shores and Barbara Gwinn. 'I959 AND THEN SENIORS The Sophomores started the school year with a big bang. They exhibited their wirn, vigor and school spirit early by entering the winning Homecoming Float and elected their sophomore candidate Homecoming Queen. In November they again surged to the front when they donated money, baked cookies and made candy to get money for a Neiman.-Marcus Million Dollar Tiger that was christened Big lrvi and was presented to the school at Christ- mas. Big lrvi has become an honored member of Irving High School. Still the Sophomores were not satisfied. They worked long and diligently to give an assembly program to raise money for a suitable cage for Big lrvi. Can they do more? They can. They have laid careful plans to become the most outstanding class in the history of I. H. S. When they leave the school in l959, they want to leave a tradi- tion so bright that all who follow will be honored to become a part of that tradition. ,, . f-.Jz,gwy,g V ,L A a n A sf'-if ik . , ,V ' .Z. 3, Hi !
