CLASS HISTORY .94 xv. In September 1943, 75 girls and boys enrolled as freshmen at Irvine High School. 52 were Irvine Junior High graduates, 13 were Ravenna Graded School students and 5 were from the elementary schools of Estill County. Our Freshmen year of 1943-44 began with World NVar II well under way. Shortly after the opening of school the entire student body was asked to cooperate with the war effort by collecting scrap metal. Our class brought in the most pounds of scrap, but placed second in the contest to the seniors, due to the greater number of students in the fresh- men class. This same year the faculty decided to experiment with a 5 period day which proved successful. Our sophomore year was marked by an exciting event. Irvine's bas- ketball team defeated Hazard on the home floor for the first time in 20 years. Later in the season the victory was repeated at Hazard. On March 18, 1945 NVanda McHargue, a member of our sophomore class, was killed in an automobile accident. VVanda had been one of our group since first grade and her death was a serious loss to all of us. We came back to school as Juniors with the war ended. The long awaited electric scoreboard for the gym arrived. We proudly won the class basketball tourney. The Science Club was reorganized and a new activity, Commerce Club was begun. A further sign that high school conditions were slowly returning to normal was evidenced by the re- vival of the Junior-Senior Banquet, tl1e first held since 1942. Our Senior Year was the busiest year of all. Selling candy, compiling the Mirror, attending the basketball tournament, writing term papers and memorizing poems for English IV were some of the reasons our last year was so hectic. Of the 75 original members of the class 35 are graduating. Twenty- four are from Irvine, 10 from Ravenna and 1 is from Estill County. Only the following members of the present faculty were teaching when we entered high schoolg Mr. Ohr, Miss Jones, Mr. Bonny, and Miss Cur- tis. Mr. Flege has been our superintendent throughout the 12 years we have been in school. x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,,gNM.f3 .x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x x.x.x.X.x.x. C165
