I947 HELEN MARIE DAUGHERTY Although she has been unable to be in school with us this year, we consider Helen a member of our class and The Mirror would not be com- plete without her. Helen was popular among her classmates and took a prominent part in school activities. She - played in the Band and was on the Commentator Staff. She was a member of the Dramatic Club and a member of the Glee Club. Motto: Hitch your hopes to a star. Colors Flower Gold and White Yellow Chrysanthemum C155 CLASS HISTORY .94 xv. In September 1943, 75 girls and boys enrolled as freshmen at Irvine High School. 52 were Irvine Junior High graduates, 13 were Ravenna Graded School students and 5 were from the elementary schools of Estill County. Our Freshmen year of 1943-44 began with World NVar II well under way. Shortly after the opening of school the entire student body was asked to cooperate with the war effort by collecting scrap metal. Our class brought in the most pounds of scrap, but placed second in the contest to the seniors, due to the greater number of students in the fresh- men class. This same year the faculty decided to experiment with a 5 period day which proved successful. Our sophomore year was marked by an exciting event. Irvine's bas- ketball team defeated Hazard on the home floor for the first time in 20 years. Later in the season the victory was repeated at Hazard. On March 18, 1945 NVanda McHargue, a member of our sophomore class, was killed in an automobile accident. VVanda had been one of our group since first grade and her death was a serious loss to all of us. We came back to school as Juniors with the war ended. The long awaited electric scoreboard for the gym arrived. We proudly won the class basketball tourney. The Science Club was reorganized and a new activity, Commerce Club was begun. A further sign that high school conditions were slowly returning to normal was evidenced by the re- vival of the Junior-Senior Banquet, tl1e first held since 1942. Our Senior Year was the busiest year of all. Selling candy, compiling the Mirror, attending the basketball tournament, writing term papers and memorizing poems for English IV were some of the reasons our last year was so hectic. Of the 75 original members of the class 35 are graduating. Twenty- four are from Irvine, 10 from Ravenna and 1 is from Estill County. Only the following members of the present faculty were teaching when we entered high schoolg Mr. Ohr, Miss Jones, Mr. Bonny, and Miss Cur- tis. Mr. Flege has been our superintendent throughout the 12 years we have been in school. x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,,gNM.f3 .x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x x.x.x.X.x.x. After making a goal line stand the Eagles allowed a pass from center to sail into the end zone. Cody Thompson was tackled before he could run the ball back. HAZARD 6, IRVINE 0 Irvine tangled with their old rivals, the Hazard Bull- dogs, on Friday the 13th and limped off the field with an- other tough-luck loss. After playing on even terms for the first half lightning struck the Eagles in the second. Bill Ross, Bulldog halfback, took Lindbergh VViseman's kick on the 20 yard line and raced 80 yards for the only score of the game. IRVINE 20, SOMERSET 7 Witli Cody Thompson running high, wide and hand- some the Eagles romped to their first win of the season. Highlight of the game was Muscle Cooper's 65 yard run on the opening kick-off to set up Irvine's first touchdown. When the game was over the Eagles had a 20-7 win tucked under their belts. IRVINE 13, WINCHESTER 12 Playing before the largest crowd ever to see a foot- ball game in Irvine, the Golden Eagles edged VVinches- ter's powerful Shawnees 13-12. Cody Thompson and Charley Broaddus set up the first touchdown in the first g,.x.x.x-x.x.x.x.x.x.g.x.x -x-x-x-x,-X-X-wvx x.x.x.y.x C241 quarter. Kermit Quisenberry plunged over from the six inch line. In the second period Broaddus passed to Ray- mond Neikirk for a six-pointer and to David Roberts for the extra point. IRVINE 32, MADISON 13 Coach Joe Ohr's boys travelled to Richmond expect- ing a hard battle froln Madison but the Royal Purples easily fell by a score of 32-13. Lindbergh VViseman, Eagle tackle, played his best game of tl1e season and converted a Madison fumble into an Irvine touchdown. Captain BI'21l1ClClllJllI'g, Darrell Cox, Cody Thompson, Muscle Coop- er, and Kenneth Farley also played outstanding ball for the Eagles. IRVINE 24, M. M. I. 12 The Eagle-M.M.I. clash featured long runs by the Eagle backs. 6'Little Kennyw Farley, all 135 pounds of him, took the opening kick and galloped 78 yards to pay dirt. Cooper and Thompson got off on runs of 40 and 45 yards respectively. The latter was good for a touchdown. Traylor scored a touchdown for Irvine by snagging a pass from Broaddus. Bobby Hester and A. I. XViseman stood out on the line for Irvine. The final score was Ir- vine 24, M. M. I. 12. IRVINE 18, GEORGETOWN 6 The powerful Eagles celebrated their Homecoming by pounding out an 18-6 win over -G60Fg6lOWl1,S Buffaloes. After a blocked kick by Lindbergh VViseman, Cody Thompson plunged over from the 2 yard line. Farley scored again in tl1e second quarter by running off guard. XViseman and Cox starred on the line for Irvine while Cooper and Thompson thrilled the homecoming crowd with their long runs. VERSAILLES 12, IRVINE O The Versailles Yellow Jackets swam to a 12-0 victory over the Eagles in a sea of mud at Versailles. The size of the 2 teams determined the outcome. The Jacket backs, being bigger, just pushed lllell' way through the line for gains of 3 and 4 yards. There were no long gains and the water kept the Eagles from using their vaunted pass- ing attack. A. I. XViseman,s play was outstanding for the Eagles. It was a very successful season and several records were established. The sea- son's record was 21 wins and only 8 losses. Madison and Hazard were the only teams to whip the Eagles twice. It was the first year an Irvine team had ever won 20 games. Victory No. 20 came as the Eagles lashed Winchester 36-30 and this was the first time an Irvine team had ever come out on top on the Shawnees floor. Playing their last game of the regularly scheduled season, the Golden Eagles rolled up one of the highest scores ever made by them. Jackson's Tigers being the vic- tims of a 64-21 defeat. In the Central Kentucky Conference, which was won by Madison High of Rich- mond, Irvine finished fifth in a field of 20 teams with 8 wins and 2 defeats, both by Madison. The Eagles drew Kirksville in the first round of the 44th District Tournament and subdued the Blue Jays 31-28. The next night they edged out Kingston 31-29 and the next game was won by the same score, Berea High falling to Irvine in a mild upset. The fighting Eagles entered the finals as a 10 point underdog to their opponents-Madison. The Purples managed to squeeze out a 1 point victory of 24-23. Scoring honors for the regular season were evenly divided among 6 players. Charles Broaddus was the leader with 174 points, closely followed by Guy Strong with 173. Rockbottomn. Being ex- tremely curious, I ventured into her studio hoping to find what the future holds for classmates of the Class of 1947. Peering into the crystal ball I saw Bob Benton, your friend and mine, the mor- tician, undertaking another stiff-case. Patty Lou Smith, a secret service agent of the F. B. I. carrie into the morgue to inspect the murdered corpse in hopes of finding a clue to the killer. After the regular grind of business, Bob and Patty decided to enjoy a pleasant evening at Simp McConkey's Golden Feather, where one of their former classmates, Jean Cole, was billed as Jeanie, The Bubble Dancer. Much to their delight' they met, upon entering, Mrs. Horatio K. Boomerang, former- ly Mildred Ann Smithers, one of New York's cafe society. The scene in the crystal changed to a small house in Greenwich Village where I saw Glynn Powell, up and coming artist, slaving over his latest creation. And lo, into his humble dwelling came a famous Powers Model, Margaret Ann Rich- ardson, who asked that her portrait be painted. thus giving Axel his first big op- portunity. I gazed deeper into the magic orb. I saw Dorothy Cox coming out of the office of a prominent physician, Tommy Scrivner, where she had just had a very suc- cessful subcutaneous incision of a serious furunkulus. On her way home Dorothy bought the late edition of the New York Times edited by Betty Masters. She was surprised to read in the headlines that Freida Nayle had achieved fame by being the first person to jump across Grand Canyon. She also read Where Billy Seale, former mailcarrier, in Ravenna, Ky., had just been appointed to fill the office of Postmaster General of the United States. She was surprised even more when she read that Wanda Durbin had achieved her life ambition, Chief Execu- tive of the Hines Bean Corporation, thus leaving her post at Walton's Wax Works vacant. The crystal glittered brightly with a familiar name on a marquee. Geraldine Scrivner was singing Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera. A bright neon sign over an impressive Fifth Avenue doorway announced to the world that Herman Wolfinbarger had replaced Arthur Murray, and was teaching dancing in a hurry. The crystal ball focused on New York Harbor where among the passengers I saw Virgil Smith, recently appointed good-will ambassador to Lower Slobovia, and Fred Noland, another Frank Buck, on his way to Africa to bring 'em back alive. Presently along came Betty Moore on her way to South America as a missionary. The scene shifted to college campuses. Margaret McPherson, an assistant psy- chiatrist at Baylor Univrsity, is short her 381,000,000 fortune by 580,999,999 Ken- neth Handy was teaching Engineering at Georgia Tech. The scene shifted to a smart dress shop. Louise Shearer was fitting Mrs. Cleve Abshear, formerly Sally Smithers, with a new afternoon frock. The range of the crystal dropped to Washington, D. C. on one of the prominent social occasions of the year. A reception was being held by Senator Sam Naive who was seeking reelection. Among the guests were Virginia Hunt, who had re- cently announced her candidacy as the first woman governor of Kentucky, and Gloria Jean Seale, who had been following her athletic husband, better known as Turk, on his tour of the States. The climax of the joyous occasion was when Mary Neal Wilson, wife of a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, played Spike Jones' arrangement of Prelude in C-Sharp Minor. The crystal ball now focused on more familiar surroundings. Near Waco on a large farm, I saw Carol Crouch and her husband. Back home, at last, in Irvine I saw Darrell Cox still slaving away for Harry and cornering a customer with this remark I had you in mind When' I bought this suit!'i Clarence Miller was manag- ing his father's music shop. 'Ann Sherrard, now Mrs. Pete Edwards, had presented her railroad 'husband with four little engineers. I saw Kermit Quisenberry, a capitalist, just returned from a tour of the U. S. inspecting his Atomic Motors factories. Gertrude Tuttle was the secretary to Vaughn Cox, President of the Pop-O Popcorn Co. In the ofiice of Irvine High School, much to my surprise, I saw Wil- liam Carhartt, new superintendent of schools, having succeeded his father-in-law. Something was suddenly queer with the crystal ball! It spun so fast that I could only see a splotch of water, a cloud, and a mountain climber. The struggling figure was George Ann Mundy going over the Alps to fulfill her age old vow that she would swim the deepest ocean and climb the highest mountain for Billy Williams. x x x X X.x.x.x.x.x.x.g.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x -x-x.-N -x-X-X-N.-X.-X-x.-x.-x.-x.-x-x x x X X N C473 , I 1 1110131 911 d 9.1 ILL 'AA 'AA 10 SS O Ill osd QU 1.0 UI no H UI HO 'P IA e1u15'1 l 1. - 0 1. .I A II .I 191111zq111110A11 51119111211 112111 10011 111011 5111ss911103 11161 9591109 01 05 u91r191H,, 51111111111 11121111911 , ulafiimf HOSIIL11 P1101 9A111s0d s1i1zm1V A11219199s -911112g1,, 91s11111 11z9N A1911 , .SX13m1V 19111I1z1501191s 1651 '11, 5111111129111 Sep 9111111 9131111199 91qe11011s911b d12,1g qv- ' gunfl gp 9,1313 991110 s11s11119p 111 1110111 6551 'dv 5111111291 11111113 11011 X111ad 91111291111 1112 112911 1611111 112111 11 13119111-10 51103 191Id113 11113219131 111110 H911m01g1,, 1112111001 11111113 1151111 11191s1s,191I 911 1161 '119111 1s11p.1121g 111211119111 H91:1111g1,, Ax011s 01 511105 S19 111111-g X11eg s191111111g X1p1191.1'1 95.1095 Kg 1s11p.1131S 111211119111 HnA9p111q,, - 5111111291 p9,1p111A1 119111101 0111 s11:9g s.i12A11V 911AA9Sl1011 G 91S119,,, SUIIUQ p11211911g 911g 911110111 s6919C1 91119 1 A 1129,1xs 1161 1111.111 S111 11912531 01 1161911113911 S,XfIU2I,, ll? 511121001 p11211911S 1111V 199ms 11919111 AsAx1ef1 1s11p1121g 11110111 9111 99s ,,U0f1,, 01112111 5111113111 91129g 12110111 A2121 11111111115 10 KZ12111 sX1aAx1V 111211118011 691893, EUIIAVNI 911a9S 1411111 s1111291q 1911A110g 91q12951112119 111zu1 19 1191 1161 X111 111 11011 99g 191110111 11z190s N9!IIU9QI,, S9?I0f 5U!Il91 9111p11:.1913 I 51111991109 u01ss91dX9 9911019 1s11p11z1g 1991115119111119 ,,Cl!J9S,, dlUU1S -ISHALIOS XUIHIOJ, 1 110sp.11a119111 19111129.19 A109 X111 s19119'1 9A0'1 19190111 6611-911111V,, 119111211 19112519111 , X11911119s1ufj 111101 9111 111911 1s11p1e1g 1991115119 112911111091 , 9111S113,, 51119uep 11u11911 HOL 1191112411 91q1ss0d1111 11101111 1511011 1 WOIIIIAX 1301 SSI PSI u1 S1125 'N 19110 05 uI9XV,, 511111201 119.1104 u911g 1391193111 gqgwq I 95111111 9111 110 9111011 11 519119 51111215 u11991111111A,, 51111111111 1111121051 11911,-1 0151011 991109 MIAA MQUBI LUOCI I X11111121 11911 01111 X11121u ,SPSS-1A1,, 5111211121 91.41251 Bp191,51 p9110ds 11211 12 11161 og AQIIOLUS P10 1915111121 ,60p1I1211I1110Q,, S5011 91111251 X111111eg 0111121 01 ,ip1111111 SAHHPIIH1 Il!
