CLARA MARGIE AVENT Margie Transfer Carnival Princess Annual Staff Paper Staff Play 1- '31 Glaaa Jluiofuf In 1940, Irrigon Grade School was blessed with the presence of LaVonne McCoy and Don Acock. In the middle of the year Helen Steagall entered the small class and they struggled through under the supervision of Miss Bedingfield. In the following year we had the pleasure of a new student, Lenora Burnette joining. Our teacher was Mrs. Newllurg. ln the third grade we all had a time leaming our multiplication under our teacher, Mrs. Matthews. The foul-th grade cgnginued with the same ornery students under the instruction of Miss Eddy. In the fifth grade the class had the loss of a classmate, LaVonne McCoy. We were all in a great chorus and had a good time with our teacher, Miss Scott. The following year we had a new boy join us. This was Don Leighton. He fit in well with the class and our teacher. Mrs. Smith. In the seventh, another boy, Ronald Berger joined us. This year we started our class with Mrs. Smith for our teacher. She left because of illness. We then had Mrs. Sunstun. when she left we had Mrs. Morgan and she substituted until we gotaperrnanent teacher, who was Mrs. Percy. Our last grade in grade school was just as upset. We lost one of our boys, Don Leighton who moved away. We started the year with Mr. Allen as our teacher. We then got Rev. Turner for our teacher, Mrs. Adams followed Rev. Turner and was our permanent teacher and passed us into High School. TheFreshman Class foundus mean as ever on initiation day. The second six weeks brought back an old classmate, Don Leighton. The Sophomore also brought back an old classmate, LaVonne McCoy. In the Junior year. we got 2 new students, Meredith Hoover and Don Eppenbach. The same year we also lost a classmate, LaVonne. The Senior year found us all happy because we made it this far. The first few weeks of school we didn 't have Meredith Hoover: she returned after a leave of absense. This year we also regained LaVonne, who came back to graduate with her old classmates. We also gained a new girl, Margie Avent. Through the years we all have taken an active part in activities, and the class as a whole has gotten along well, and have very pleasant and happy memories of all our friends and school days, we are leaving behind. The first bright star is Helen Steagall's. She has given up her nurse's training to join the Ringling Brothers' Circus as Madame Zo -Zo, the elephant rider. She enjoys her new work so much that she has decided to make it her life work. The next star shining our way is Don Acock's. He is the mayor of lrrigon. the biggest little town in the United States. Next we see a very bright star in more ways than one. It is Meredith Hoover. She is the new Marilyn Monroe. Then comes Margie Avent, hostess of the Rest Inns. She has a complete chain of these famous restaurants. and has a very good business. Her specialty is anything. The next in line is Don Eppenbach. now in Yugoslavia teaching English and history. Before leaving America, He published his new revised edition of the dictionary. Lenora Brunette has really moved to the front. She has been operating a prosperous turkey ranch with the help of her husband and her six children. The stars tell us Ronald Berger now owns.the finest beauty salon ever know. Ze Hair You'll Let Me Fix Either Way You'll Be Chix . We are told he is a very fine hair stylist. LaVonne McCoy is in the Ozarks and has twelve children. Reckon as how it's Cheaper by the dozen . She seems very happy. The last star is Don Leithton's. He sold all his horses to go into the dairy business. and has re-sold that line to produce the Drink a Little and Live Longer Youth Serum. Wait! One more star flashes out. Oh! yes! it reveals the occupation of Mr. McMasters, the senior advisor. He has long since retired from his own dance band and seems totbe spending his time writing poetry. We will be watching the stars for further developments. .1 AI' f I I I I I , I I I I . I I I I . I :'- I:-. u H. I. If -V ,. uf- 1- :nf 3' .y ,J ,- In I, - I. -, U1 I , . Y I- g I ' '14 , I: XL! Of- ficers were elected as follows: President Janet Stephens: Vice President--Evelyn Sanders: Sec. Treasurer--Mary Gaspers, Sgt. at Arms--Bob Frazier. The mighty Seniors planned quite an initiation, complete with a football game played at Helix which all Freshies attended. A return party is being plan- ed for the spring of 53 . Our treasury holds a sizeable sum from the sale of candy at basketball and volleyball games. Various members of the class took their turns at selling and cleaning up in the gym. Being the lowest classmen it was our rightful duty to clean up after the Christmas Banquet, but to tell the truth we really enjoyed it. Under the coaching of Les Rucker the boys got off to a good start by winning the first game of the year. The boys cooperated very well with one another. A lot of stress was placed on fundamentals. Go -operation and sportsmanship are the two major things to be gained from athletics. Any sport, competitive sport that is, is allowed to stay in the high school curriculum because of the value received from it, not entirely because it is important to the school to win games, but because it is important for the things it teaches the students that participate in it. When the boys and girls realize the fact that athletics are given for what they, themselves get out of it and not what the school gets out of it, they will enjoy it more Irrigon is looking forward to a better season next year both from the stand -point of games won and also from the angle of the enjoyment the players get from it. 1'. !-flw! : I-gn PL s 49.--2.:gM', ' Vt,-, ' r ,H 1- ,Q W. l .' A B Edwards, Sullivan, Berger, Kenney, Losness, Acock, Coach Rucker, Ross, Smith, Edwards, Eppenbach. The Basketball team played 21 games this year. This figure does not include the tournament. The team looked pretty ragged at the beginning of the year but began to sharpen up as the season came to a close. The coach, Mr. Les Rucker, said he was pleased with the progress and advancement of the boys, There were quite a few changes made in the first ten as the season wore On. At the close of the season the first ten consisted of the following boys: Kenney, Acock, Smith, Ross, Mann, Shingledecker, T. Edwards, K. Edwards, Sullivan, and Losness, W. Huwe and R. Warlick were managers. W. Kelly received a letter for his help as assistant coach. On Dec. 5, 1952, Irrigon went to the basketball jamboree at Umatilla. This was the official opening of the basketball season for the Irrigon High team. The Saturday following the jamboree, Irrigon went to Umapine for their first game. Fron then on Irrigon played, on the average, two games a week until the tournament on Feb. 20, 1953, where they met their Waterloo at the hands of the Uma - pine basketball squad. nv, J 14: I I I v . ff 5- .
