On Graduation Day we'11 all shed a tear Everyone will look back Separate ways we take. How that you're out in the real world Take a step back and see all you1 ve done. Til miss ya Iroquois Central Time really flies, doesn't it? 2 Opening Time for Confusion Time for Relaxation Time for Firedrills Seniors 3 DEDICATION In June of 1987, we at Iroquois suffered a great loss when Mr. Patrick Collins was tragically killed in a car accident along with three of his Pembroke driver education students. During the final day of instruction, their driver education car was struck head-on by a drunk driver with disastrous results. In his earlier years, Mr. Collins served four years in the navy as a machinist's mate during the Korean War. He then attended Buffalo State College and received his degree in Industrial Arts which he taught for fifteen years at Eden. He began teaching at Iroquois as a substitute in 1982, and from 1983 through 1986 he taught Driver Education. His final year of teaching was as a driver education instructor at Pembroke. Mr. Collins enjoyed those activities which al- lowed him to share his time with his family. A dream of his, as a lover of adventure, was to reach the peak of a snow-capped mountain, a dream that came true for him on a trip to Califor- nia with his wife and children. We mourn and are diminished by this loss even though we are enriched by the legacy he left us. We, the Class of 1988, proudly dedicate our Iroquoian to the memory of Mr. Patrick Col- lins, a man who believed life must go on despite adversity. As life proceeds, so will the memory of him in the hearts and minds of us all. 4 Chad Filipski shows us his motor coordination sUe Wollen gives an announcement with her usual pep and charm Mr. McCready watches over the days activities Modified football players look ready to handle anything that comes their way Kim Swartz and Jenny Balon keep in step at the dance Dan Meyers happily works on his electronics project Underclassmen move and groove to the sounds at the dance Seniors 5 1 1. Scott Catlin shows us his patriotic colors Rock Yearbook Day Monday October 5, was Rock-sunglasses day. Students were asked to show their spirit by wearing their favorite rock T-shirt, or by dressing up like their favorite rock star. Many did, including art teacher, Mrs. Russell, who not only dressed like John Lennon, but brought in her painting of him. She also held a contest in her art classes to encourage students to get involved. The students were asked to draw a picture of their favorite rock star and post it on the bulletin board. The winner was Mike Or- lowski, with his drawing of a Motley Crue member. Many teachers said they thought it was great to see different students get involved, not just the ones who usually do.' All in all, the day went well and the response for doing it next year was encouraging. 4 6 Opening Clash Day Tuesday October 6, 1987, in spirit of Homecoming Week, it was clash day. Many people dressed in plaids, stripes and polka-dots. This activitiy showed school spirit,'' and it was fun to those who participated. There were many who didn't partici- pate in this activity. Some reasons stated were, why bother, it's stu- pid, and I forgot. To those who didn't participate, it's your loss. Yearbook October 5-9 was national Yearbook Week, and the staff of the 1988 Iroquoian celebrated this first ever occasion with a unique opportunity. On Rock Yearbook day students were eligible to register to win a free yearbook. One student from each grade level won. The winners were: Freshman Kelly Wurtz, Sophomore Kathy Thompson, Junior Joanne Luders, and Senior Janet Duerr. The homeroom that purchased the highest percentage of yearbooks won free lunch for all those who had participated. Mrs. Warzel's homeroom 114 won with 77% participating. 2 3 1. Sue Walsh and Matt Minich definately make an appearance in their clashing attire Opening 7 Teacher Switch Day Wednesday, October 7 was Senior Day. The seniors switched roles with the teachers and taught their classes for that day. The seniors were to do as the teacher would. They taught a les- son or a lab and even got to lecture the classes as a teacher would. The teachers said it's a great way for students to see what a teacher has to put up with. One student said he thought it was fun to see the teach- ers having so much fun and really en- joying a blow-off day for a change. Mere is a list of a few of the students and the roles they played for the day: Mr. Clinard - Denise Szymanek Mr. Dennis - Sharon Stone Mr. Staebell - Lora Kay Mr. Stepien - Kerri Liddell Mrs. Warzel - Bonnie Mauck Mrs. Butler - Rachelle Rydzynski Mrs. Mann - Julie Lindberg Mrs. Smith - Diane Mewman Overall, most of those who were in- volved enjoyed the switch. The day turned out to be successful and an adventure to some. Congratulations to everyone who participated! 8 Opening Opening 9 That Was Then, This Is Plow On Thursday, October 8, some students dressed from their favorite era. They wore every- thing from togas to peace signs and bandanas. One person dressed as a baby and carried around a bottle and blanket, now that was an interesting look at the past. Another popular dress for the day was from the 50's era with a wide varity of bobby socks, saddle shoes, pony- tails, and brightly colored scarves. Then there were the people who dressed as This Is riow or in other words, just another school day. Talk about out of the ordinary, they wore jeans, sweaters or T-shirts, and sneakers. We would like to thank the many participants in the day's activity. Homecoming Pep Assembly The Pep Rally Friday afternoon was a success for the most part. The energy and enthusiasm could be felt as the shouts and cheers rang out. The assebly began with the musical cheers of the band, rousing the students as they entered the gym. As the students settled in their own bleacher sections and things became orga- nized, the assembly began with the greetings of Miss Boggan. Activities got underway with the traditional, Let's go ICS'' cheer, done by each individual class in competition. Although the competition wasn't judged, each class put forth a great effort to all become winners. It was a close competition, but the sopho- l 1. Peace, Love and Happiness states Molly Hoeft 2. A definite look from the past was displayed by junior Tina Hauber, who got into the day 4 10 Opening mores came up winners of the class competi- tion, juniors second, seniors third, and fresh- man fourth. The junior class won the wood contest; this is the first time in Iroquois history that the senior class didn't win this contest. next came the spectacular cheerleading pom- pom routine. The cheerleaders worked long and hard preparing the routine. The cheerleaders showed much energy and spirit as they waved their pom-poms, kicked their legs, and per- formed high quality moves to the tune of Lolli- pop, Lollipop , Old Time Rock 'N' Roll , and Be True To Your School . As the senior athletes were traditionally called down from the bleachers to have their faces painted, the confetti contest took full swing. After this contest, something new took place at the assembly. It was a Multi-Event re- lay . Five girls and five guys from each class, and five men and five women from the faculty volunteered to participate in the race. The events consisted of blowing up and popping bal- loons, egg carrying, puffing a flower and giv- ing it to a cheerleader, and buckling up on a chair. The freshman class was victorious. Chuck Dimitroff and Colleen Talty came up winners by showing the most Indian war-like spirit in the face painting competition. The assembly came to an end with the an- nouncement of the homecoming attendants and queen. Winners were: Freshman-Dawn Schuelerand Shelly Boitschenko, Sophomores- Leah Corrigan and Marjorie Maze, Juniors-Jill Apa and Missy Roth, and Seniors Lisa Scott and Melinda Weiglien were chose along with the queen Jennifer Colern. Jenny Colern happily accepts her bouquet of flowers being presented to her as this year s homecoming Queen The Billies dummy hangs awaiting its ceremony at the evening Pep Assembly and bonfire The look of anticipation is evident in the faces of the Senior class Chris Martin, Stephanie Gilbert. Diane Mewman, Jenny Bender, and Sherry Comstock decorated in Senior Class colors from head to toe The competition and excitement showed through at the assembly during the relay between classes and faculty Opening 11 12 Opening Homecoming 1987 This year's homecoming game against the Williamsville South Bil- lies was played in the bitter cold on October 10. The game did not start out in the Chief's favor as the Bil- lies marched down the field to score a touchdown and successful extra point. The second quarter showed some improvement, but the Chiefs could not halt the Billies drive. At the end of the first half, the score was 13-0 in favor of Williamsville. The halftime entertainment con- sisted of the band, the cheerlead- ers, and the class floats as they pa- raded around the track. During this time, the judges finished counting their points for the final float decisions. Each class worked long and hard constructing their floats with the help of their advisors. The judges, all from Iroquois, were Miss Gold- bach, Mr. Jacobs and Miss Schafer. First, second, third, and fourth places were taken by the sopho- mores, seniors, juniors, and fresh- men respectively. While the final decisions were be- ing announced, the second half of the game began. Matt Minich scored the Chief's first points of the game as he ran for a three yard touchdown. A successful field goal attempt by Lance lanello made the score 13-7 in favor of the Billies. The Chiefs' defense held strong against the Billies' offense until the fourth quarter when Williamsville scored another touchdown and two point attempt. The final score of the game was 21-7. That evening the Homecoming dance was held in the cafeteria. It was decorated with the theme THAT WAS THEM THIS IS MOW by the SGB members. The music pro- vided by John Barry kept every- body moving till midnight. Many chaperones commented that the kids all seemed to have a really great time without anyone getting in trouble. After the dance many people topped off the evening by going to parties or getting together with some friends. Opening 13 The voice behind the Chiefs. It seems as if it were just yesterday when we were at the bottom of the totem pole, lost in the maze of halls. We all imagined the day when it was our turn to become seniors, having domination over the underclassmen. Today as seniors the halls are a second home to us, and we can do almost anything that we'd like! Tomorrow, we will leave this school forever after the graduation ceremo- ny, asking ourselves, Where has all the time gone? If I Had Another Hour In The Day. . . by Traci Coffey Typical Students at Iroquois: I'd sleep—you can never get enough sleep. If you don't get enough at home, there is always study hall, or even English. Another hour! That would mean they'd make school longer. Would that mean there would be an extra three hours on the weekend? The Die-Hard Student: Study, of course. Then the grin appears. The Athletic Type: There would be time to run those five extra miles, do 500 more push-ups and time left to pump some iron . I'd save some friends in there with it. Most of the people leaving this great high school will re- member friends. You will probably remember the time just before homeroom when your best friend came up to you asking for help with homework due that day. Some kids leaving, will remember the times with friends spent at parties. A time for friends is a time to talk to somebody to tell them what's wrong. Another time for friends is the time you call a bunch of people and ask them to have a game of football. You play for a while and some people get hurt and other people get angry, but it is fun—a time for friends. You slowly sit down. You know you have to study this period because you have an important test next period. You open your notebook, as if to study, but then begin to talk to your friend sitting next to you. The study hall teacher gives you the option to either shut up or take an hour. You don't want detention, so you write on the desk for five minutes and wait for the teacher to cool off. When you think you've been quiet long enough, you begin to talk, this time for the rest of the period. Don't cry. We ll keep in touch,' someone announces to the general crowd. Knowing we won't, I get depressed. Everybody says goodbye to their friends. The crowd dis- perses; a few lingering souls remain, staring at the old brick building with tear stains on their cheeks. Looking out the back window of my car as we pull out of the driveway, I realize that I have made it out, but I want back into the safe world of high school. I am staying with the Little s and I am really enjoying living with them, as well as going to Iroquois. School here is completely different than in New Zealand. Most schools have about 300 people, uniforms are re- quired, they are more strict, and the classes are harder. One good thing about school at home is having an hour for lunch, and half an hour for morning tea. I have really enjoyed being on the golf team this season, as well as going to the football games on Saturday's. Many thank's to everyone who are making my stay a memorable one.
