Mr. Ken Mann Ken Mann was born in Buffalo, and was a graduate of the class of 1979 at Iroquois Central High School. He attended the University College of New York at Plattsburgh, and returned to Iroquois where he is cur- rently employed as equipment manager. Manny, as he is frequently called, takes care of the school’s athletic program and assists in coaching vari- ous sports teams. Besides his full-time position here at Iroquois, he also works part-time as a bartender at Tony Rome’s in East Aurora. Outside of school, Ken enjoys softball, basketball, racquetball, and weightlift- ing, to keep in shape. Ken is always around to lend a helping hand and give support to all the teams during their seasons. His work is spent primarily behind the scenes, and therefore often goes unnoticed, but without his efforts there would be no foundation for the sports programs. Because of Manny’s dedication, friendly attitude, and willingness to share his time, we the class of ’87 proudly dedicate the 32nd edition of the Iroquoian to Mr. Ken Mann. 2 Dedication Taking A Step Ahead You Stand Start Where The world won t care about your old defeats If you can start anew and win success; The future is your time, and time is fleet And there is much of work and strain and stress. Forget the buried woes and dead despairs; Here is a brand-new trial right at hand; The future is for him who does and dares; Start where you stand. Start where you stand and never mind the past; The past won’t help you in beginning new; If you have left it all behind at last Why, that’s enough, you’re done with it, you’re through; This is another chapter in the book; This is another race that you have planned; Don’t give the vanished days a backward look; Start where you stand. di • 1) Deanna Banaa shows Cheerleaders have pep even at outrageous hours of the morning. 2) The 1986 relay team consisting of: Jim Bapst. Opening When you ask the typical student how the week has gone, he usually answers, “It has been far too long, has gone much too slowly, and when the weekend finally rolled around it went by much too fast.” This can be commonly diagnosed as school burnout. It hits the seniors during the first week of school, and rapidly spreads throughout the rest of the stu- dent body. Many, however, discover quick remedies for these symptoms, and put them into practice on those long waited Friday nights. The favorite hangouts seem to be associated with food. Santora’s is a good place to talk about the game and find out where all the parties are. It doesn’t matter what you do on Friday night, just as long as you have fun. Many go to the football games to cheer for their favorite players and socialize with their friends. After- wards, many try to find out what is going on and whose parents are away for the weekend. Parties seem to be the most popular spot for meeting that special someone or just relieving the week’s tensions with close friends. 4 Opening 1) Don Battistoni attempts to impersonate the rank and file of Root’s Red Army. 2) The Varsity Cheifs at home on the gride iron driving downfield with the pigskin. Laurie Bebee is still lost in yesterday's lesson 7) Special friends have lots of fun over the weekend: Nevada Monta- gu and Michelie Klesewetter. Opening 5 ( .' 'T Here Comes The Weekend r As Friday finally approaches, and you pull yourself out of bed for the fifth con- secutive time that week, you can just barely keep your eyes open as you stum- ble onto the bus. You get to school, and with a sigh of relief, realize that tomorrow you can sleep until 12:30. You join your friends in a discussion of where to go, what to do, and where to sleep on the ever awaited Friday night. A classic week- end activity for most students is finding out who is having the biggest party. As one senior put it, “There’s always a party going on somewhere. It is a great time to be with your friends, relax, and get away from the pressures of school until Sunday when your day is filled with last minute homework, put off until the last possible moment. You enjoy your last few hours of your day off, before you dive back into the academic world, and get up at the insane hour of 6:00 the next day. With this depressing thought, you reluctantly proceed, knowing that after five more exciting days at ICS, another weekend is just around the corner. J 1) Girls. Please! There’s only so much of Wouter to go around. 2) Linda Barclnlak. Deanna Banaa, and Jessie Ferracclo ham it up in the library. 3) Joelle Gaughan and Tammy Sweeney: “Say Cheese!” 4 Andrea Hickman confirms a big plan for the weekend. Opening 7 7 £ Homecoming week-the spirit of apparel Homecoming ’86 started off with a week full of unusual activities. Monday, the entire student body came to school dressed in sweatshirts and sunglasses. Tuesday was named ‘Beach Wear” as everyone was at- tired in Hawaiian shorts, shirts and lais. There was even a grass skirt or two. Wednesday was ‘Senior Day’ as the seniors took over the teaching posts and conducted classes for the day. Thursday, students came dressed in plaids, stripes, polka dots, camou- flage, and generally anything that looked terrible together for ‘clash or mismatch day’. Friday was the height of excitement. Every- one wore their traditional colors: Freshmen in green. Sophomores in yellow, Juniors in blue, and Seniors in red. It was a memorable week, and a great start for the events to come. 8 Opening Matt Row. Jim Newman. Joelle Vacanti. Al Romanchuk and Dan Whalen have fun showing off their beach wear. 1) Senior athletes: Kathy Donovan. Tammy Beyer, and Stephanie Pierce display the tradi- tional ICS War paint. 2) Seniors bury the underclassmen in a blizzard of confetti. 3) Varsity cheerleaders perform their pom-pom routine. 4) Seniors anticipate the chance to show their spirit. Seniors take all As you walk down the halls of Iroquois, the faint chant of “let’s go ICS” can be heard. Approaching the auditorium, it grows stronger until you finally arrive at the gym, where the doors, chairs, and everything else not bolted down is rattling. The traditional cheer was the height of spirit at this year’s Pep Assembly. The bleachers having been repaired, students stomped their hearts out as each class showed it’s spirit. The cheer- leaders did a pom-pom routine to “Playing with the boys” by Kenny Loggins. The spirit award was won by the seniors as they threw a shower of confetti to bury the peo- ple below. The chant, “Seniors Rule’’ tow- ered over all the other classes. The Homecoming float attendants and Queen Laura Cholewinski were an- nounced, and the cheerleaders read off the senior athletes as each was painted in the traditional manner Kathy Donovan and Joe Kunick won the titles of Prince and Princess for displaying the best painted faces. When the assembly came to an end, stu- dents dispersed through the hallway’s with a renewed class spirit, and as they left, they took with them many new memories from Homecoming 1986. You’ve discussed plans, gone shopping, and talked with your friends about who’s going with who, and who’s not. What is this spectacular event? Why it’s the Iroquois Homecoming Dance. Many people planned ahead by making dinner reservations, and getting dresses and suits in advance. Still others waited frantically making last minute arrangements. Many couples showed up after dinner from various restaurants in limosines, arriving at the dance in style. This year’s theme for homecoming was “Saturday Night at the Movies” with the sound system by “Max” Laura Cholewinski was crowned Queen. The dance ran from 8 until 12 and the evening ran smoothly with the help of various chaperones who volunteered their services. As people began to depart for parties. Minich as Most Outstanding Boy. His dedication and involvement have qualified him for this honor. As a freshman, P.J. played JV Soccer and Varsity Tennis. He also participated in the Peer Counseling Program at the Boy’s Club of EMW. In our sophomore year, P.J. was our Vice-President. He also switched to Cross Country and still played tennis. In his junior year, he served half a term as a delegate until he was elected President of SGB. He also switched from tennis to be a member of the champion track team. As a senior, P.J. was a captain of cross country. In his four years, Pete has worked on three holly hangings and three floats, finally seeing us win as seniors. Outside of school P.J. is an active member of the Kissing Bridge Ski Patrol, and was chosen outstanding National Junior Patroller in the East last year and runner up Junior Patroller in the country in 1986. The class of 1987 voted Laura Cholewinski as Most Out- standing Girl. Her long list of activities and achievements are the reasons for receiving this award. In her sophomore year, she was elected Secretary, was Vice-President in her junior year, and in her senior year she was elected President. Laura has also been very active in sports and after school activities. She has been in tennis for four years and captain for one year, volleyball for two years, basketball for four years, captain for one year, and softball for two years. She has ridden the float for all four years and was voted the Homecoming Queen. She has also been a band member for all four years. Minich HALL OF FAME Class Of 1987 The class of 1987 entered Iro- quois Central High School in Sep- tember of 1983, when we began our four years as timid and naive freshmen. It seemed forever until we could finally claim the honored title of senior. We made a good start by taking a second place with our float “FROM POP TO ROCK, THE BEAT GOES ON” in the home- coming parade; our attendants were Laura Cholewinski and Pam Dekarz. Much to our dis- may, holly hanging was cancelled due to the weather. In our sophomore year, despite all efforts, our float entitled “PE- TER PAN” placed fourth in the homecoming float competition, with Joelle Vacanti and again, Lau- ra Cholewinski as attendants. We overcame our disappointments and pulled together as a class to place a proud second in holly hanging with “A WALT DISNEY CHRIST- MAS”. Our class president for both sophomore and junior years was Kathy Donovan. In spite of the many hardships of scarce student activities because of disputed con- tracts during our junior year, our class hung together to help make homecoming and the junior ball a great success. In this, our final and senior year, we are guided by the efforts of our class president, Laura Cholewinski, and SGB president, P.J. Minich. Our unification is evident in our class spirit; we were again, the loudest class at the pep rally, made the biggest mess of confette under the bleachers, and for the first time in three years, won first place in the float competition with the theme of “GHOSTBUSTERS” for SATUR- DAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES. The attendants were Kristin Little and Tammy Beyer, and our Home- coming Queen was Laura Cholewinski. It seems like only yesterday that we were scared freshmen, but with time, we grew together, and with much success. It seems evident that we can attain whatever goals we are determined to pursue. They usually start by accident. Somebody tells someone else a true story or incident, then that person tells the story again and adds a little false detail to make it more interesting for the next person. Little by little the true story is forgotten and rumors take the place of facts. Two things that give strength and power to a rumor are the human needs to gossip and to enjoy someone else’s misfortune. Sometimes rumors get started on purpose. A motive for this could be anger or jealousy. This seems to be the best route to revenge and also the most damaging. You hardly ever hear a rumor that is flattering to the person it’s about. A rumor can be extremely harmful to a person’s reputation. If enough people who hear a rumor believe it, that rumor will be remem- bered for a long time and will stick with a person. So in the future, watch your step, you could be the next target of a vicious rumor. Jessica Accurso sitting in the library during studyhall. 32 Seniors Friends and food go together A common statement such as, “I can’t wait till lunch can be heard from students in different classes during the day. On this break some used this time to run errands to the office, to make important phone calls, and to make appointments with their counsel- ors. However, the majority of students would socialize with friends as well as grab something to eat. Although lunch lasted twenty minutes, students still found this time to be quite relaxing for munch- ing on cookies and chit-chating with their full mouthed friends. For the most part, it is a sign of relief. While the underclassmen are glad to go one step higher, the seniors are eager to go to college or do their own thing. Graduation is a sad time for leaving friends that you’ve known for most of your life. For the majority of students the end of the year activities were the most fun. Dances, the Pep ral- lies, football games, and other fun events most people will not forget. These special times have brought people closer together, and together, for the last time. Laimen Sanchaz Below: Carmen Morera. Teresa Serna-Borsa. Wouter Tersteege. Lotta Jut- mar. and Laimen Sanchaz all enjoy the sun here in America. LOTTA JUTMAR My home is in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. I have always loved traveling and meeting new people, so it is exciting to be in America. Our schools in Sweden are quite different. School requirements are higher, but the discipline isn’t as strong. We’re divided up into small classes, according to our line of study, of approximately 30 students. These 30 students have all their classes together throughout high school. I really like the sports here with cheerleading and pep assemblies. In Sweden we play club sports not connect- ed to our school. Here I played field hockey in the fall and really enjoyed Coach Millar and the girls on the team. I look forward to playing soccer in the spring. I am living with the Battistoni’s, a great family and I’ve enjoyed every bit of my stay with them. I’ve gotten to know that people are pretty much the same all over the world. When I get back to Sweden I will work for a few years before I go to the University as most Swedish students do. CARMEN MORERA I came to Buffalo the 24th. of August. I live in Barcelona, Spain. I live in the big city and I really like to live in the country. I made the decision to come here because I wanted to learn about different customs and another way of life. The first weeks I felt home- sick and uncomfortable, but everyone tried to help, and now I feel more natural. Everything is really different; the school, the food, the peo- ple, and the everyday way of life. I enjoyed the tennis team, and I’m enjoying the ski club. I had a really good time and I did a lot of things I’ve never done before. I cross-country skied, I went roller skating, sledding and I rode horses. Thanks to everyone! WOUTER TER STEEGE My name is Wouter ter Steege and I come from the Netherlands. I already graduated from high school and I’m all set for college. I’m going to study in the University in Amsterdam. One of the reasons why I came here was be- cause I wanted to know what American life was all about. Besides that, I became bored of the Europe- an chicks. I wanted to see how the American girls let their blue-jeans talk. I can tell, you do pretty well. But keep on practicing. I also wanted to see some places here. Now some differences between the States and the Netherlands. First of all, we don’t have a drinking age. We don’t have to act as sneaky as you have to do. We just go to the store, bar, disco, or whatever. Next, here everything is much bigger and farther away from each other. They grumble when you are late, give a load and-one-half of homework, for the weekend, and quiz you on things you couldn’t possibly have learned. Who fits this job description? A teacher, of course. They’re not all bad, though. Can you imagine where you would be without teachers to guide you, and mold your thoughts throughout the years? They have been there all your life, to help with a problem —be it acedemic, or personal. They have shown you what was right, praised your sucesses, and helped to correct your faults. We all would be uneducated fools walking aimlessly around without a direction for our lives without them. We often take teachers for granted because they are always there for us to fall back on. The time they spend to explain our confusions should not go unnoticed, because it often goes above and beyond the call of duty. They prepare us for our life’s purposes long after our education is finished. Sometimes, this cool pillar of intelligence crumbles, because of an unruly group of students, who have closed their minds and are unwilling to learn. At these moments, teachers seem to explode with the frustration of trying to break through a brick wall, and who could blame them. For those of us who are willing to learn, we thank them for the job they have done over the years. After all, could you ever have gotten past Dick and Jane without them? Elma became the «ounfrtt town ' in Erie County The first settler came in 1845 to harvest the timber They built a dam on Buffalo Creek. dun a millrace and erected a sawmill Gradually as the land was cleared, homes, barns, stores, tavern, blacksmith shop, school and church were built nearby When the need for a post office became apparent, so did the need for a name Mr Joseph W Bancroft suggested. There is a btg elm tree at the crossing of the Bowen and Clinton Roads, why not add the letter a to the elm tree and call the post office Elma’ The suggestion was accepted and adopted The area then became known as Elma Village On December 4.1856. Elma officially became a town The first town meeting was held on March J. 1857 in the home of Clark W Hurd Sawmills were erected in several areas near creeks Small settlements grew at these various locations instead of one central location Over the years, the town continued to grow Farming became the main occupation after the trees were gone With the town spread out. it still fee maintains its attractive rural appearance that is enjoyed by a population of over 10.500 people A -' ’ AV fA-tr' (--'iW ► £ , A . t? cAutumnview m rvrrnsf u ■yinrrnu emne If you wuk a MMsenif placenuil plane dlk your usnrresi CUSTOM V BOWEN’ ROADS ELMA.
