DETENTION I believe that by the end of every student's four years in high school, they will have had to spend at least 1 hour in the beloved institution known as detention. Detention is the fate of all practical jokers who dare to violate the rules laid down by the teachers. It is mostly assigned during study halls when the unfortunate stu- dent who has nothing to occupy his time with, asks his friend for a piece of paper. It is supposed to be the punishment served for any misbehavior, or as we see it, fun and adventure. An hour or two is gladly spent when the offender recalls the act that bought them that hour. Detention is assigned for the slightest movement, whisper, or sound, and faster than you can say, Wait, I didn't do anything. And upon saying this, the teacher suddenly feels challenged to say, Want to make it 2 hours? It's so unjust. Teachers often use it as a con- trolling device to keep the less-than studious stu- dents in line. No matter how wild the class, they can always keep you somewhat civilized. For detention veterans , detention is a way of life, and one more hour really doesn't matter. But for those who haven't had much experience in this area, detention strikes a note of fear. So remember, the next time you attempt to crawl out of study hall, there just might be a teacher waiting to apprehend you at the doorway with a smile saying, You've just bought yourself an hour.
