1985 — A Limited Year Coming to school this year, the students experienced the teachers seeking a new contract. Their con- tract had run out and they were try- ing to improve their pay and benefit status, because it was among the lowest in the area. This affected students in different ways. Will there be a Homecoming? Yes, there was a game and a dance, but no floats. Why? The teachers would not chaperone float parties because of their situation. Will there be class dances? No, teachers will not chaperone. A prom? Sure, there better be. Another way students were affect- ed, was in the class (most important- ly). Some teachers were upset to the point of not taking an extra few min- utes between classes to explain a problem to a student. As far as taking tests in some subjects, one did not know what their grade was until two or three weeks later. The teachers had agreed not to take homework home to correct themselves. The major problem with this is that the students are the sufferers, not the teachers. They have learned the material and can go someplace where good teachers are needed and are paid for. The students are missing the little extras that help the basic and harder problems. Remem- ber the teachers are there for the students, so how much is your edu- cation worth to you?
