WE THE CLASS OF 1983 PROUDLY DEDICATE OUR BOOK TO: MR. PETER BOSCH There is a certainty in this man Who is unafraid to share with others. Unafraid to become in- volved in the Candid life of a student. To him we dedicate this IROQUOIAN In an attempt to return some of the respect That he first gave to us. 1983 Yearbook Staff Those who teach become our friends, because they give ALL they know! i. DEDICATION 3 HOMECOMING 1982 Homecoming 1982 was a smashing success for all those who participated. The Homecoming weekend started Friday with the afternoon pep assembly. This year the Senior Poll was announced by the Yearbook Editor-in-Chief, Judy Carpenter and Production Man- ager Kevin Abraszek, at the assembly instead of waiting until later in the year. After the pom-pom routine, a culmination of many long hours of practice by the cheer- leaders, and the color guard routine, float attendants were revealed. This year's homecoming attendants were Freshmen: Stephanie Digati and Dawn Schruefer; Soph- omores: Laurie Gaglio and Chris Balyszak; Juniors: Lau- rie Macaluso and Laury Simme; Seniors: Mary Jo Cup- pone, Mary Lou Kaufman, and Homecoming Queen Laura Schroeder. Saturday the Varsity Football team lost 12-0 to Wil- liamsville South. However, this could not harm the spirit of the half-time parade. The juniors won 1st place under Chairpersons Mark Zukowski and Laurie Macaluso. The Sophomores won second place under Steve Ziembiec and Lisa Zgoda. The Seniors under the direction of Tom Knab, and Laura Schroeder won third place. The Fresh- men came in fourth place under the direction of Chair- people Fritz Kohl and Kiersten Lang. The Homecoming dance theme was First Love . It was evident that a lot of work had been put into this. Everyone who was there had a good time. The entire Homecoming weekend was an experience for all who participated, and many people will never forget it. 3] Blfi3 EfflfcB CEO EC? ROBERT ZYWICKI Four Seasons of Life Some of us are like the spring, it is when we begin to grow. We find out who we are and all the things we need to know. All the things we encounter on life shapes us into kinds of persons we are. And we begin to dream of our future years by looking out afar. Some of us are like the summer, like the plants thriving under the sun. We begin to blossom as better persons and make new friends one by one. It is also the beginning of our own journey along our chosen road To experience what our dreams are and what our future holds. Some of us are like the fall, we begin to harvest at last The fruits of our labors that we have sowed in the past— We find silver-lined and golden memories mingled in And the reflections of our youth begins. Some of us are like the winter, our quest for dreams nearly done. We curl up in front of the fire remembering the good old days gone. SENIORS THROUGH THE YEARS TO FIND OUR TRUE IDENTITIES SEE PAGE 215 27 i BABY PAGE UNDERCLASSMEN The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Has worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back, I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. Patrick Njorage Njau Mauricio Moreas Where the heck is Elma? Asked the postman when he didn't find it on the map. I had thought to keep a hold of myself, and I was doing fairly decent when Use began to cry. And after that I knew that I had lost my battle. I really miss those intense breakfasts in your office. It's a real test of your courage but well worth it. It was pretty hard getting used to good old Switzerland again. We all have a Western lifestyle, but there are, nevertheless, a lot of differences. My A.F.S. year was undoubtedly the most exciting year of my life up to now. The A.F.S. bus trip was fantastic. I met a lot of wonderful people from all over the world. It is very hard at the end of the year to say goodbye to all the friends, teachers, adults in the A.F.S. Chapter and especially to your host family. Then came the departure. One by one all my friends left — Phil, Ilse, Silvia — everyone was simply bursting into tears, it was a day of very strong feelings. When I left home to begin my A.F.S. year, I didn't know what I let myself into one year away from home; are you crazy girl? Now I'm glad I had a chance to ex- perience what A.F.S. is all about. It's FANTASTIC! A.F.S. will change the shape of your world. A.F.S. is Love A.F.S. is Brotherhood. We are hoping for just one year To make our message good. You really feel stupid sitting in class and don't understand even one word of English. I loved going to the luncheons at Manila Home Bureau and Elma Senior Citizens meetings. We ate so much we could hardly make our speeches. Merrilee Lands The year was well worth the twenty pounds I gained. Please come and visit me so I can do something back with pleasure. An A.F.S. year teaches you more about yourself than you may ever learn in a lifetime. A. F. The other officers are Gayle Ljungberg as Vice-President, Marie Thompson as Secretary, and Michelle Doyle as Treasurer. The purpose of the organization is to extend the students knowledge of France outside the classroom. This is experienced through talks and slides by A.F.S. students, films or filmstrips, trips to area French restaurants, observing French techniques in art during trips to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, French plays or musicals, and field trips to Quebec. A typical meeting. An officer looks on with enthusiasm. 208 FRENCH CLUB NEWSPAPER Although beginning with a slow start, the Newspaper gained its recognition and throughout the year continued to put out a fine piece of journalism. The TOMAHAWK was published every two weeks and was headed by the editorial leadership of Doug Knox. The staff of the TOMAHAWK is small but the workers are devoted to the cause of giving needed information to the student body. The newspaper consists of articles on school sports and organizations, as well as happenings around the school , an advice column and feature interviews. With the intention of giving students a chance to learn about aerodynamics through the construction of a balsa wood plane, the Iroquois Mod- el Airplane club was devised. The club was open to all stu- dents willing to put in the time and effort after school hours. The airplanes which were built were J. Guillow's Javelin, an extended flight guider with rubber band power. Their airplanes fly as proud as the American eagle. Kevin Leidich, Mike Hall, Hans Bader, Eric Schmitz, Mr. Abies. Time Time goes slow as we wait for these books to come. The wait seems endless until... Photography Easily the most important job on year- book involves photography. We had a large staff of photographers this year and the photography Editor was Don Dessert. Spe- cial thanks to Bryon Foersch for his work in the lab. Copy An essential part in the mak- ing of this book is the copy. The staff was small but loyal and were under the guidance of Editor Hol- ly Zgoda. Another way we made money was by sell- ing patrons.
