FOOTBALL Winning Spirit Prevails Despite 1-6-1 Season Varsity Football, 1972 . . . training started early . . . team spent a week at training camp “Good News” Opening game . . . Chiefs lead until Alden slips by their defense with a touchdown in the final minute, to take the game 34-26 . . . losses to Williamsville South, Grand Island follow . . . Chiefs come back to smash East Aurora 20-14 at homecoming ... tie with J.F.K., four more losses, finished season with I.C.S. fourth place in Division V . . . Tony Guido named All-Star Defensive Linebacker . . . Dan Johnson chosen All-Star Offensive Fullback . . . with 724 yards on 101 carries, Dan was leading ground gainer . . . Keith Wilkinson was top receiver . . . Head Coach Wainman: “We’d have had more recognition if we had been a winning team.” . . . Captains: Mark Shanahan, Karl Dembik, Tony Guido, Bill Pasco . . . overall. Chiefs averaged 5.1 yards per carry, “the best we’ve ever had” . . . Winning spirit, according to Coach Wainman, made Chiefs a “great team to coach. We could have won any one of ’em. They never quit, right down to the last game.
