“
1 We have dedicated the 1978 Loner to you. Hazel Borowski, because you have done many things for the students of Ironwood Catholic High School. Though most of your deeds pass by un noticed, we are now willing to acknowledge you. Mrs. Hazel Borowski, a member of the Ironwood Catholic Board of Education where she has been an accountant for 6 years, is an active part of all fund-raising programs within our school. When the school needs something, Mrs. Borowski takes upon herself the responsibility of find- ing the solution. In 1970, when the state wide issue of financing private and parochial schools came up, she was right up-front, fighting for our cause. To Mrs. Borowski, we are grateful, because without interested persons like yourself, Ironwood Catholic High School would not be as it is today. 3 Andrini The staff of the 1978 Loner” would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Surpre- nant, the faculty, the student body, and par- ticularly, Mr. Grenda for their co-operation, time, and unyielding patience in preparing this yearbook. I would also like to thank Kim Suzik and Karen Me Quiggin for their gener- ous help and effort. We have tried to cap- ture all of the beauty, feelings, dreams, activities and accomplishments of both the fun and serious sides of the people of ICHS. We hope you will enjoy this book of memorable occasions as much as we have had in preparing it for you. Sincerely, The world is like a mirror reflecting what you do, and if your face is smiling, it smiles right back at you.” 4 Mrs. Federico Mrs. D’Antomo Mr. Tomlanovich SEATED (L R) MR F. TEZAK, MR. R. She likes to swim, ride bikes, camp, go bowling and play basketball and football. Indoors, she busies herself in the kitchen cooking and tending to her plants. Outdoors, she can be found driving around or 'exploring.' Her goal is to become a photographer and get married. Joan has a talent for making people laugh. This talent comes to life when she gives her forensics pieces. She has been in forensics for 4 years, and even though she hasn't gone down state, she has won many certificates and awards. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; CCD 1, 2, 3, 4; Volleyball 1; Pep Club 1; Forensic Club 2, 3; Pop Shoppe 1,2, 3, 4; Yearbook Staff 1,2, 3, 4 (Editor 4). Joan K. Andrini Swimming, bike riding, going camping, and play- ing volleyball are only some of Debbie’s interests. In her spare time, she makes herself useful in the kitchen by cooking up a storm. Being the very active girl she is, Debbie has ambitions of becoming a beautician or caterer. She enjoys being with other people and serving their needs. Despite being a quiet girl, she excelled in track in her freshman year and got her letter. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Choir 1; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensics 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 1; Volleyball 1; Pop Shoppe 1,3, 4. Debra L. Balduc 18 Because of his physical ability and strength, almost all of Dave's interests are sports-related. Water skiing is his favorite, followed by fishing, hunting, basketball, baseball, football, swimming, and tennis. Dave also likes to go hiking in the woods and to travel. He’s in many sports programs in school and lettered in both track and basketball. Looking toward the future, he sees himself having a career in either law enforcement or criminal jus- tice, but only after going to college. Dave Decur Beth, a student at Ironwood Catholic for twelve years, enjoys driving, camping, swimming, bike rid- ing, tennis, and volleyball. Beth has been on the vol- leyball and track teams for which she has received her letter in her freshman and sophomore years. She has a special talent in forensics as being a story teller. She has gotten awards at the District and Regional Meets all four years. She would like to be a cosmetologist. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; CAC Trea- surer 1; Forensics 1,2, 3, 4; Choir 1, 2; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Track 1; Volleyball 1,2, 3, 4; Cheerleader 1,2, 4. Elizabeth B. Fabbri 19 Marilee Fudaley Although Marilee's greatest interests are horses (horse shows, horse back riding, and horseman- ship) she is also interested in other things. Among these are basketball, football, volleyball, and swim- ming. In her sophomore year, she got both her letter in basketball and a ribbon for throwing the shot put in track. She’s sports-minded, but the serious side of her knows that being a bookkeeper or accountant is what she wants to be after graduation. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Basketball 3, 4; Volleyball 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1,2, 3, 4. Paul is a natural candidate for his future career, wildlife management. His interests portray the out- doors — hunting, fishing, trapping, snow shoeing, baseball, swimming, tennis, snowmobiling, and bow hunting. An outstanding student at ICH Paul has done well in forensics and won highest individual honors at different times in high school. He has held office as: class rep. 1; class president 2; student council president 4 (second semester) and does plan to go on to college. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Baseball 1,4; Forensics 1,2, 3, 4; Chorus 1,2, 3, 4; Choir 2, 3, 4; Mass Leader 2, 3, 4; Archery Club 2, 3, 4. Paul Gust 20 Kathy Jean Hegbloom Mark is a quiet guy who likes to play basketball, baseball, and go skiing. He enjoys tinkering with small engines and has decided to make mechanical work his occupation. This can only be done after years of training in college. Throughout his high school years, Mark had classes at Luther L. Wright High School and at our local junior college in auto mechanics and small engine repair. Other activities include: Track 1. After enduring shorthand in her junior year, Kathy has decided to use her skills and pursue a career as a secretary. However, she loves nature and being outdoors. Some of her favorite sports are swimming, camping, riding bikes, and playing ten- nis. She is a very active member in our school after being a cheerleader for her last three years. In her freshman and sophomore years, Kathy excelled in serious interpretive reading and received awards accordingly. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Choir 1,2; Forensics 1,2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1,3, 4; Pep Club 1; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1; Volleyball 1. Mark Holmes 1 .«• 1 A multi-talented guy, Tony is interested in skiing, swimming, fishing, skate boarding, tennis, and camping. During his spare time he reads science fiction, carves wood, and draws. After high school, Tony plans to join the Army (Rangers) and be a pro- fessional mountain guide in Colorado and own a ranch. His greatest achievement, Tony feels, is not missing a day of school his whole freshman year.” Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1,2,3, 4; Server 1,2, 3, 4. Anthony J. Kapets Although Joe is clearly associated with being a bright student to his fellow classmates because of his interest in politics and history, he isn’t planning to pursue this field. Instead, carpentry has won out. In his junior and senior years, he took a building course at GCC where he learned his trade. After graduation, he plans to go to Gogebic for 2 more years. Joe, a tall, slender guy, isn't extremely out- going, but when the time comes to get hard and devout workers, he is right there. Other activities include: Track 3, 4; Cross Country 4; Forensics 1,2, 3, 4; Boys Chorus 2. 22 Cathy is a very out going and politically minded person. She enjoys current events, skiing, golfing, and (most of all) people. Cathy has been at 1C for 11 ' 2 years, as she has been selected to be an exchange student during the second semester of her senior year. Scholastic abil- ity has played an important role in her high school life. She has been honored with many awards and certificates. After graduation, Cathy will be going to college to become a journalist. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Student Council 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensics 1, 2, 3; Chorus 1, 2, 3, 4; Attending Operation Bentley 3; Cheerleader 1, 2, 3; Offices (Class President 1; S.C. Sec. 2; S.C. Vice Pres. 3; S.C. President — 1st semester 4.) Catherine A. Malovrh Jim, who is an outdoorsman, likes to fish, hunt, boat, swim, and play tennis. He also enjoys baseball and basketball. Jim’s main reason for being out- doors is to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of nature. Jim shows an interest for making things in his shop classes and he always does a very good job on them. This may be why he would like to become a carpenter after he is through with school. Jim, how- ever, has another interest in law, which he would also like to go into, so he may take that up in college and then decide after what he wants to be. Other activities include: CAC 1,2, 3, 4; Basketball 1,2, 4; Track 1, 4; Pop Shoppe 1,2, 3, 4; Boys Cho- rus 1,2; Server Forensics 1,2, 3; Vice President 4. James Micheal Mazzon 23 2 25 Karen L. McQuiggin Karen, who has been at Ironwood Catholic for eleven years, likes cooking, drawing, and being with little children. Karen has a great deal of patience when dealing with children which may be why little kids look up to her. Karen also enjoys watching sports and being out of doors. After high school she would like to get a job, but if none are available, she will go to college for one year. Other activities include: Labels 2, 3; Glee Club 1, 2, 3; Volleyball 1; Candystriping 1; CCD 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensics 1,2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Yearbook Staff 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensic Club 3; CAC 1, 2, 3, 4. John H. Neice John came to Ironwood Catholic in his sophomore year and completed his high school years here. He is interested in aviation and working with cars. In his spare time, John likes to play guitar — both folk and bass, which he plays equally well. After high school, he wants to go to the Air Force Academy and eventually become a pilot for a com- mercial airlines. Other activities include: Cross Country 1, 2; Foot- ball 1; Chorus 1,2, 3, 4; Band 1; Basketball 2; Track 3,4. 26 Kathy likes drawing, writing, music, and skiing. She is clearly associated with art to her fellow stu- dents because of her interest and ability to draw and paint. She is seriously planning to pursue the field of Commercial Arts. Kathy, who has been at 1C for 12 years, has repre- sented her class as an officer (sec.) her junior year and has also provided the school with her many cre- ative posters and designs for pamphlets. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1,2,3. Kathy Olson George, who has been going to 1C for 12 years, is one of our overall athletes. His interest in sports might be the reason he does things such as play baseball, tennis, and basketball, both in and out of school. Fishing is a leisure time hobby. However, a career in meatcutting is his outlook. Among special achievements are being his junior class vice-president and serving all 4 years of high school in the Christian Action Corps. Other activities include: Track 1; Cross Country 3, 4; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4; CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Boys Chorus 1, 2; Forensics 1, 2, 3. George Alan Peterson 27 Barb Ruppe Debbie likes swimming, bike riding and shows an admiration for sports in general. She has played basketball for three years, and when in her junior year, she made the All Star Conference Team. She also enjoys volleyball and track. Deb, who has been at ICHS since first grade, has represented her class as an officer (S.C. Rep.) in junior and senior years. She would like to become a Data Processing Operator after college. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Volleyball 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensics 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Cheerleading 2; Pop Shoppe 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1,2, 3. Coming to Ironwood Catholic three years ago. Barb had proven to be a very involved student through activities and sports. She was her junior class president, proving her abilities to lead and organize. She was chosen for Girls' State the sum- mer of 1977. She has interests in writing, hiking, bike riding, and being out doors. She has narrowed her future ambitions down to two choices but still can’t decide whether to become a physical education teacher or an accountant. Other activities include: CAC 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 1,2, 3; Volleyball 1,2, 3, 4; Forensics 1,3, 4; French Club 1; Pep Club 1,2; Choir 1; Glee Club 2, 3; CAC President 4. Debra Jane St. John 28 Like most of the boys, Steve mostly enjoys out- door sports. Among them are swimming, camping, running, hunting and fishing. The most outstand- ing, by far, is running. He has been in both track and cross country all 4 years of high school, letter- ing in both. In his junior year, Steve qualified for the All-State Cross Country Team, and when competing against the finest in the U P., took a 4th. Intellectually, Steve enjoys history and is very good at it, but wishes to become an Electrical Engi- neer. Other activities include: CAC 1,2, 3, 4; Boys Cho- rus 1, 2; Basketball 1. Stephen J. Semenak Kim, who has been at Ironwood Catholic for 12 years, enjoys swimming, bike and motorcycle rid- ing, camping, and bowling. Kim is also interested in baking and being out of doors. Kim’s love for sports is coupled with her uncoor- dination. She attempts them with her usual high spirited personality. She has a talent for making people laugh and a patience that comes naturally to her in dealing with others. Her future ambition is to just settle down and become a homemaker. Other activities include: CCD 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Volleyball 1; Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1, 2, 3, 4; CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Forensics 1, 2, 3, 4; Sec. Treasurer 1, 2, 4; Labels 2, 3; Yearbook Staff 1, 2, 3,4. Kim A. Suzik 29 One of Gary’s interests is music and it should be because singing is a talent he’s good at. He fills his leisure hours by going fishing, or finding a quiet place to sit down and do some creative writing. After graduation, he would like to become either a com- puter technician or a professional photographer. Gary took math courses all four years of high school and considers 'making it through them’ his most outstanding achievement. Other activities include: Boy’s Chorus 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1. Gary Swanson Mike who is very sports oriented has been at I.C. for twelve years. He likes fishing, water skiing, track, baseball, basketball, and snowmobiling. He is a very easy going guy which will probably be to his advantage for his career after high school. Mike would like to be a truck driver and drive the big rigs, such as the Kenworth and Mack trucks. Other activities include: CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Track 1, 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1, 2; Softball 1; Server 1, 2, 3, 4; Boys Chorus 1, 2; Forensics 1, 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1.2, 3, 4. Micheal Gustav Valle 30 Lucy S. Vinoski Snowmobiling, football, welding, and hunting are the interests of this four year student of Ironwood Catholic High School, but he is also known for crack- ing jokes. He is better known to fellow students as ‘Z’. John does not yet know what he wants to do in the future, but you can be sure he will be good at it, because of his easy going personality. John did not partake in many school activities because he was only interested in what he had to do, but he really has a talent for making other peo- ple laugh. Other activities include: Track 1. Lucy likes sewing, knitting, collecting stamps, and helping other people. Lucy has proven her ability to help others as she has been a candystriper for four years and she has given a lot to the people during her years of services. She also finds it very reward- ing for herself. After Lucy has completed college she hopes to become a legal secretary. Other activities include: CCD 1, 3, 4; Forensics 1, 2, 3, 4; CAC 1, 2, 3, 4; Pop Shoppe 1, 2, 3, 4; Glee Club 1,2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1, 2; Candystriping 1,2, 3, 4; Choir 2, 3, 4.
