STUDENT LIFE A DAY AT IRONTON HIGH SCHOOL School starts at about 7:50, when students arrive by car, by foot, or by bus. From their buses, students get their books, then go to homeroom. After attendance is taken, Mr. Boggs comes over the in tercom with the morning announcements. After homeroom, everyone goes to first period. The extensive curricu- lum at IHS offers the students a wide variety of classes to choose for their individual schedules. At left is a gym class. What a way to start the day! There are many natural sciences to choose from. Here is a sophomore English group hard at work, among them biology. 9 Home-economics is a popular class for both girls and boys. Here are Clothing Construction and Bachelor Living courses. The Social Sciences encompass Psychology, Sociology, American History, World History, P.A.D., and Current Events. Here is a Junior American History class. 10 After fourth period comes lunch. The cafeteria provides nutritious plate menus and many ala carte items. n Those musically inclined can develop their talent in either Instrumental Band or Vocal music. The commercial courses help students understand the world of business. Here, a drafting class learns to plan and design mechan- ical drawings. Painting, drawing, design, crafts, and sculpture are en couraged in art classes. In occupational work experience, students earn while they learn. 12 Vocational Education prepares boys for a technical career after high school. 13 At 2:38, students reboard their buses, and the school day is over. Among the many accomplish- Ihe IHS Student Council ments of the 1974 Student Council was the installment of two new soft-drink machines and the addi- tion of many ala carte items to the lunch menu. 17 ASSEMBLIES One of the first assemblies at Ironton School was held to give students information about the gym facility. The enthusiasm and interest shown there definitely helped to get the levy passed at the polls! 18 IHS vs. Findlay-4 10 74 A pep assembly, of 'course On April 11, the annual National Honor Society Assembly was held. Twenty Seniors and ten juniors were chosen to join ten other se- niors selected last year. 19 KNITTING SEWING 20 FURNITURE-REFINISHING CANDLEMAKING DECOUPAGE CROCHET CHESS 21 On November six, 1973, Ironton voters passed a levy to build a new physical education building at Ironton High School. The new facility will match the architectual design of the present high school. It will provide the much- needed room for gym and health classes, winter sports, and intramural activities. Also, the new gym will provide a place for adult recreation after school. With the completion of this building, IHS will have one of the best physical education departments in Ohio. We are heading toward the most acute shortage of energy since World War II, President Richard Nixon told the nation in a broadcast address on November 7th, 1973. Due to an Arab shut-off of oil to the United States, America faced a winter with 17 percent less oil than her estimated needs. Americans were asked to do what they could individually, such as lowering home thermostats six degrees and forming car pools for shop- ping or driving to work. Also, Congress passed emer- gency legislation to deal with the problem. In lanuary the nation switched to year-round daylight savings time. Highway speeds were lowered to 55 miles per hour. Still, by lanuary of 1974, many local gasoline stations had closed down, or at least shortened operating hours. In March, the President announced that the crisis was over. We were merely faced with an energy problem. The United States had come through another critical sit- uation and had shown her self-sufficiency to the world. 22 ISSUES: IRONTON THE NATION THE WORLD Unlike previous Arab-lsraeli wars, the 1973 war affected us directly. The Arabs, in order to put diplomatic pressure on Israel, placed an oil em- bargo on any nation not supporting them. Although many nations gave in to the Arab demands, the United States continued her policy of support towards Israel. During the early days of the war Syria, Egypt, and especially Israel suf- fered heavy tank, plane, and personal losses. Then Israel, in one of the most savage tank battles in history, trapped an Egyptian force east of Suez and occupied a large area west of the ca- nal. At this time, the American armed forces were put on alert because of possible Soviet intervention. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger then almost single-handedly initiated peace talks, convincing the Egyptians to pull back forces and the Israelis to withdraw from the Canal. As of March, the oil embargo was still in effect. Meeting A Deadline The 1974 Yearbook Staff at work 24 £■• . The last processional 30 Seniors sing a final Alma Mater We've finally gotten our diplo- mas-that little piece of paper that holds a key to our futures. It's taken twelve long, hard years of work to graduate. Since we've en- tered the doors of Ironton High School, we've matured a great deal. We've gone to our first prom, held our first part-time job, earned our first drivers' license, and cast our first vote in a political election. But far more important than these things, we've gotten a solid educa- tion-knowledge that will be vital to us regardless of whether we get married, get a job, or further our educations. Graduation is sup- posed to mark the end of our childhood, and that's a bit fright- ening. But thanks to Ironton High School-its reachers and adminis- trators, we face the challenge with confidence. 31 Liz Greene—Valedictorian, Citizenship Award, Kiwanis award, 4.000 Cheryl Kirk—Salutatorian, Blanche and Thomas Hope Memorial Average. The best in the school's history, they set new records every time they took the field. Their offense, especially early in the season, was a devastating ground game that gained 2483 yards in 12 games, spearheaded by All-State honorable mention senior halfback Bruce Carter's 1020 yards and a 7.1 average per carry. Senior fullback Terry Mowery, also honorable mention, had 704 yards for a 3.9 average and junior Alfonso Johnson rushed for 466 yards and 6.9 average. The Tiger defense was also awesome, rising to the occasion many times to make crucial plays. They set a new school record of 20 interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries. First team All State senior linebacker Rick Massey had 4 interceptions for 2 touchdowns. Senior Kenney Green, All-State honorable mention cornerback, had 4 interceptions with 1 touchdown while Bruce Carter grabbed 4. All-State honorable mention senior guard Merril Triplett set a new school record of 14 points scored on defense. He also had 3 fumble recoveries. First team All-State senior guard Terry Parker led the team with 62 solo tackles with a record of 10 in one game, as well as 66 assists. Returnees were Cecil Morrison and Jeff Mark- ins. New runners this year were Paul Rader, Dave Payne, Steve Byington, Mike Phillips, and Kevin McCown. This year's team was an- chored by Senior standout Cecil Morrison, Captain, who was only defeated twice during regular sea- son action. In 4 of these meets Ce- cil set new meet records. At the Lancaster Invitational, he missed the best meet time by 1.2 seconds set 6 years ago. This is always con- sidered one of the most challeng- ing meets of the season due to its size.
