ATHLETICS The Athletic Department The newly expanded Athletic De- partment at IHS consists of various opportunities for students to develop their athletic ability. To ensure safe- ty, the department has hired an ath- letic trainer to prevent and treat inju- ries. Gym teachers have emphasized fitness as well as specific sports. Health is also heavily stressed. SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department The Ipswich High School Social Studies Department is creative, help- ful, and ener getic. Each member of the department adds a special touch to the environment and the curricu- lum of the school. Ron Toleos, our department head, was known for using some rather strange teaching techniques. Classes often found themselves outside chanting Indian spirituals or stum- bling blindly about on trust walks. Rick Storer, best known for West- ern Civilization, starts his class ev- eryday with a smile and a joke. Mr. Storer is also involved with many ac- tivities from the Leadership Project to the Ipswich High School track team. Our political science teacher, Ken Spellman, may teach CI.S. govern- ment by day, but he is also a football coach and student government advi- sor. For economic and foreign culture classes stop in Mr. Dembowski’s room. He conducts his class with hu- mor and concern for students. Jane Rotsko, with her enthusiasm for history, has taken the department by storm. She has generated fresh- men participation in the political pro- cess. It is obvious that the members of the Social Studies Department have a great amount of talent, experience, and enthusiasm. Nancy Emerson Amy Lovell

The Leadership Project is a special organization in our community. It dedicates itself to the development of leadership models and programs which are designed to enhance young people ' s lives. The project also hopes to reduce incidence of drug and alcohol abuse. This pro- gram believes that adolescents are very responsible and capable people who have a great impact on their community. One important goal is to create a more positive environment which can better address substance abuse and other issues. Amy Player Lisa Terry 18
