FOREIGN LANGUAGE - r » The Foreign Language Department Foreign — Belonging to or concerned with another nation Language — Vocal symbols by means of which human beings interact and communicate Department — Separate division or branch, as in government organiza- tions, business, retail, stores, or schools According to The Scribner Bantam English Dictionary, that is the defini- tion of a foreign language depart- ment. But here at Ipswich High School, it is much more. The teach- ers have given students the opportu- nity to blossom, experiment, and ex- perience something different from math or science — a change from for- mulas and equations to accents and tones. French, Spanish, Russian, and Latin have been a much needed di- version from the core requirements at IHS. Although all of these teachers employ their own individual teaching methods, they are all working to- wards the same goal — to be the best educators any student could have. MATH The Math Department Math. To a few it’s commonplace, yet to many students each problem can be a harrowing experience. From Algebra word problems to Calculus theories, every step is a challenge that the student at Ipswich High School must brave through at one time or another. The Math Depart- ment has been the guiding light down the long, treacherous path to suc- cess. They have helped us over dan- gerous proofs, through dark func- tions, under low-hanging geometric shapes, and around dismal word problems. But just when equations were closing in and SohCahToa’s were everywhere, the Math Depart- ment pulled us out into the sunlight. Now that we have reached the end of the path, maybe, just maybe, someone will use his algebra to figure out how long it takes Sally Sue to ride her bike x miles east, 2x miles north and 5x+ 1 miles south of west of her home if she does all this on Monday morning at 7AM . . . SCIENCE The Science Department Passing through the IHS Science Department is an experience which transcends the ordinary limits of physics, slipping into the realm of metaphysics. As new converts in ba- sic biology, we were bombarded with a flurry of instructive packets. Clock- watching became our sole source of entertainment. During sophomore year, the witnessing of “awesome de- mos” mesmerized us. We learned a new way of worship in the chanting of the elements song, and were deemed “geeks” and “triple re- treads. Intuitively, as juniors we flocked to physics softball. Unfortu- nately, the earth’s gravitational force plucked Mr. Quigley from our midst. His replacement demonstrated sheer spiritual stamina and a strong hand as he brought an Eastern influence to our Western thought. We were thus reborn into Biology. Our biological bibles are bigger and better than any before as we continue our pilgrimage toward higher knowledge and greater spiritual awareness . . . Torie Hopkins (Lab Technician)
