Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1987 volume:

h Memory of Mary Welle Happiness is the dream that we aii desire to achieve. Unfortunateiy, a dream was iost this year: a ioss that made us ail re- flect on what is truly important in our lives. We will miss her dearly, but hopefully a greater appreciation for what we have and what we hope to achieve has been attained. Aithough we can never have her back, Mary ' s smiie wili aiways remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. This yearbook is our deep expression of thanks to all the parents of the Class of 1987. With much research, determination, talent, and effort, this class history has been compiled and presented. However, our motivation and enthusiasm in achieving our goals, both past and present, has stemmed from the supreme encouragement of our families. A man ' s worth is judged by those who surround him, and indeed our parents have helped to guide us since the day we could pronounce the word success . It is to you, our mothers and fathers, that the Class of 1987 humbly dedicate this book of love. This book is a symbol of on end which is also a beginning. Now, as our high school years come to a close, we will all take different directions to- ward the future. Although we may all be separated, we will never forget the times we ' ve had together. During the past four years, while growing individually, we ' ve also become a close knit group. As each of us steps forward into the future, wherever it may be, we will carry with us the memories of I.H.S. The best of luck to everyone. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS SENIORS 4 PORTFOLIO 74 FACULTY 30 SPORTS 82 UNDERCLASSMEN 40 RETROSPECTIVE 108 ACTIVITIES 54 ADVERTISING 134 3 When did we finally become seniors? When did we achieve this lofty status of high school responsibility? For all of us it came at different times. For some it happened when we passed our junior year, tor others perhaps it came later. Maybe an event or a changing of season brought forth the realization that this would be our last year in high school. Every little thing was monumental because it would be the last time. It would be the last first day of school, the last school dance, the last time we could hear those motivating student announcements, the last gym class (well, not everything has to be sad), the last time pumpkins would be rolled down various hills, the last Christmas, the last high school party (well maybe not the LAST high school party), the last whatever meant a lot to you. But when all the lasts finally hit, a senior still has not been made. A senior finally becomes a senior when he realizes that the lasts only signify the beginning of the firsts. The first time going to college, first time getting a job to support yourself, first time to be legally able to go into Agawam Video and get something really disgusting, a first time to deal with life outside the structured sanction of high school. Responsibility looms over us like an impatient time bomb. But let ' s put it on hold for a while. It ' s time to sit down and look back on four years, that were not always easy, but not exactly a drag. Let ' s relax a little bit; hey, we really did accomplish something. Something that gives every one of us a right to be proud. We will always treasure our lasts and strive for our firsts because we finally became seniors. Where ya goin ' girls? Denise Segner The time me, Cindy, Jodrie and Chris Alexopoulos were sitting in suspension because I stole a salt shaker from the Said Bowl during lunch, no a class. A cop followed us back to the school where we were welcomed by Charlie on the front steps with his arms crossed. All he said was, Ladies, my office. Next day in suspension we ordered a pizza and had Walt ' s Cab deliver it. But, it was late so we had to flag the cab through the window and when we finally got it, Mackenzie was substituting for a class across the hall. Alex did a 3-point turn and dropped the pizza. Charlie picked it up and gave us detention. I think we were the first people to ever get detention during suspension. Stephanie Bies It started off like any other day. We were on our way to school but, got side-tracked on the way there. We de- cided to stop off at Donald ' s house. He was home and had to do some things so we decided to take the trip with him. I just wanted to know , , , Chris, Alex-did you really see those Chinamen dance? Hey, Steph- was that really Cujo? Well the day went on: Hey, Guys! Watch out, its following us and Good grief, is this bridge long! By the way Alex, those are real people. Steph was a bit on edge that day but. I ' m glad she got a grip on it. And, no-l ' m not Jaba the Hut. Steph, where did you get that gum? It sure is, damn good gum though and the fish weren ' t bad either. Proms are supposed to be something you ' ll never forget. But, Shan, Alex and Bets had one heck of a vacation once school was back in session. Shannon McElmon FACULTY A Day At The Gravel Pit The following is a satirical outlook on how things function around this place, it by no means is trying to insult, undermine, or cut down the working force of the high school, but . . . let ' s not be totally serious. Scene 1, act 1: Fred Flintstone (Mr. Fortado enters his office) - Willlmaaa!!! I ' m home!!! Wilma (any one of the various beautiful secretaries stationed at their assigned posts) - Yes, dear, I can see. Fred F. - Listen, Wilma if I hear any more remarks like that I ' ll (Enter Barney - Mr. Mackenzie) - Fley, hey, Freddie boy, we got trouble. The Bront o- burger workers (cafeteria workers - we sympathize, really we do) just left again because Bam-Bam and Pebbles (the entire school population) just started a brown sack rebellion, something about food that wasn ' t fit for Dino. The Apple B.C. ' s just blew up on Mrs. Granite (Ms. Townsend), Mr. Slate (Mr. Thompson) is coming down for an inspection and the rockfessors are complaining about well, I don ' t know, they are just complaining, Fred F. - Easy Barney, don ' t get your tail feathers in an uproar. Freddy boy will handle this. I ' ll just call another popular faliocrulty meeting and straighten everything out. Barney - Okay Fred, Uh, whatever you say. Scene 2, act - .■ (disgruntled workers meet in the rock-n-roll room, it ' s 2:30 by my sun dial) Fred F. - Okay, quiet down. Now I know there are some problems, so I ' ll just shaddup and be all ears. Ms. Dorock Fournier (representing our math dept.) - I need more slate, all my 3 granite is running out! Mr. Roockso (representing our English dept.) - I need more copies of The Great Rocksby! Mr. Rockendolan (representing our Music Dept.) - I need new tusks to replace the old ivories! Mr. Laddrock (representing our Foreign Language Dept.) - What about my trip to Paris, the city of candles? Coach Welchrock (representing Athletics) - 1 need more helmets, the boys are starting to feel pain!! Rockin ' Ron (representing Social Studies) - I need some history, class is getting boring. Betty McNeill (I know, I know, she ' s gone, but the name is perfect) I need more brochures for all the slate colleges! Mr. Quigrock (representing our Science Dept.) - What about my new rockulators!?! Houston (as himself — you don ' t mess with perfection)-Yeah I want some help too! Fred F. - Okay, you want it, you got it, plus everybody gets a raise. Just remember to vote for me for Grand Poobah next spring, (the rockfessors are ecstatic and break into for he ' s a jolly good fellow .) Barney - (frantically) But, Uh, Fred, Uh, there ' s no way we can do this. Fred F. - Don ' t fear Barney, where there is hope, there is a chance that everything will work out. If we all stick together we can make it work, (while I ' m inspired) Have faith Barney old buddy, old pal, old friend of mine. Wilma - (rushing in ecstatically) - Fred, Fred we were just chosen as the chisel representatives to the SAT ' s, we finally got rid of all our chisels, we ' re rich, we ' re rich, we ' re rich! PORTFOLIO The Artist Lover In the dim light bled vibrant walls of abstract perversity Amidst the impasto, Strokes of violence consumed him, bent by the immediate clarity of his glasses. His mouth sculptured, face moist, like a tightly wet canvas; “1 shall now 76 When I look inside a lightbulb I see a desperate woman trapped within a transparent asylum; with her copper arms of twisted wire she reaches upward — When the night falls her body shivers in anguish, her passion bursts into imprisoned light — and in frustration she lives her barrier life. B. Johnson John Walker Jamie Howarth Beautiful wings beat in the wind. Rushing and diving, feathered songsters dance an extravagant ballet in the sky above. T. Maizone Laura LaVallee Mirror Fragile, pellucid Shimmering, reflecting, revealing Prophet of truth Interpreter T. Josephson Dan Walker War War is a mischievous child That no one has the courage to scold. But soon it grows too ominous For one man ' s hold And conscience. Its power spreads like the tide ascends. Creeping slowly, taking land, then suddenly — Flooding. War feeds and flourishes on fear, hate. And love. Its ghastly mouth swallows men, digesting their emotions. Then spitting back their lifeless bodies. War is all men ' s enemy. It lies, cheats, and steals. And despite efforts to kill its ruthless heart. No one can. It lasts forever, lingering in the minds of men. T. Josephson 79 Becky Guay I look into the mirror But I see to my surprise, A wholly different person Looking deep into my eyes. The carefree little girl I saw When I was four or five. Has now become a young w oman Fighting to survive. It ' s really sort of scary That time has gone so fast For what then I called present Has now become the past. I look into the mirror And the face looking back at me Is that of a young lady Where a little girl used to be. S. McElmon Jamie Howarth SPORTS Sports are as vital to a high school as books. New ground is not being broken by pointing out that being physically fit is just as important as staying mentally fit. The two work together to form a bond that makes up solid physical health. But the importance of sports in a small school like Ipswich goes a little deeper. Ipswich is one of the smaller schools, population wise, in the Cape Ann League, but the ratio of students who play sports is very high. Why do so many kids play sports? What makes it all worth while? In a small Division III school the chance of an afhlete recieving a scholarship is very small; it happens, but rarely. The main reason students play sports is the satisfaction of win- ning. They like to see their names in print, and the glory of it all can be consuming. However, winning isn ' t everything, (corny, but true). For example, say that a team goes undefeated, makes the state tournament and goes on to win the state championship. That is the ultimate for any high school team: to be the best. Sometimes, however, something is missing. At Ipswich we have that missing element. People care about each other. The feeling of togetherness not only helps unite a team, but also helps the school and the community pull closer. A great example of fhis feeling of unity is when the football team cheered on the soccer team and meant it. A gap between fields that were miles apart was spanned. The epitome of high school sports is bonding a school together whether the result is winning or not. At Ipswich we have accom- plished this. The sweetest thing to support this theory is the fact that . . . we win. Football Varsily Team Record Wins - 6 Losses - 4 Ties - 0 Captain: John Linehan Hit ' Em Hard FRONT ROW (L TO R): B. I ' ll smile and remember the joy I live today. I have seen, a thousand eyes stare in my face, a pleasant dream, how will it be replaced? All my friends, will soon part and go their separate ways, but to the end. I ' ll smile and remember our special days. But time, you can ' t buy time anymore, just say goodbye time I ' ll be missin ' you, as I walk through life ' s door. And if we ever meet again, bump together on a street. I ' ll grab your hand and say, hey friend, weren ' t those times way back really sweet. We ' ve turned the page, we know our left from our right, we now hold the stage, our destiny is now in our sight. And if we ever talk again, reminisce about the past. The absolute favorite, however, was Top Gun by miles and miles of air- space. The summer films-The Fly, Aliens, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Ott also recieved rave reviews from the class of 1987. Cn a more serious note, our more intellectual students agreed that Out Ot Africa, Witness, and The Color Purple were the best The Rocky Horror Picture Show experience also made the list. Strange to say, however, that no Rambo or Rocky films recieved as much as one vote-sorry Sylvester! Sometimes the programming on TV can leave a little to be desired . . , sometimes it leaves a lot. The class of 1987 watches only the best. Namely The Cosby Show. The other prime time favor- ites include Moonlighting, (second place). Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court, (love those Thursday nights), Mac- Gyver, The Facts Of Life, and Dynasty, (I guess we ' ve outgrown good, old GFI). For the more frivolous, we ' ve got the Fllnstones, and for the more adolescent . . Ses- ame Street? For the slightly off the wall- Monty Python. Flappy Prime Time Viewing! Favorite Movie Favorite TV Show There ' s nothing like the sound of a favorite group to bring back memories by the myriad, (that ' s an SAT word!). The top three in this category certainly do that; they are: Van Halen, U2, and Pink Floyd. The rest of the candi- dates in our poll ranged from AC DC to Run DMC and included: The Violent Femmes, Journey, The Beatles, Squeeze, INXS, New Man, The Police, The Cure and the Beach Boys. Yes, Led Zep was also in there. Meryl Streep has become almost a synonym for the word actress. A classic wom- an as well as actress, she truly de- serves this position. Fler peers, old and new, have also been cho- sen by the seniors as worthy of mention. Cybill Shepherd was chosen number two for her role in Moonlighting, and Demi Moore was voted number three for her numerous movies roles. The hunks have it! Number one goes to the top gun, Tom Cruise, who stole hearts in Risky Busi- ness, All The Right Moves, and most recently. Top Gun, (the number one movie of ' 87). Number two and three were Michael J. Fox and Rob Lowe, re- spectively. The older men in the acting world recieved their votes-Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood would not be left out. Favorite Group Favorite Actress Favorite Actor With ap- pearances in two of this summer ' s best movies, Twist and Shout was voted the favorite song, Stair- way to Fleaven was tied with Lisa Lisa ' s All Cried Out for second place- a rather odd combination for top three. A few others were: In the Name of Love , Shock the Monkey , I Drink Alone , and Black Coffee in Bed. Favorite Song Looking for the perfect comeback? Flere are some of the best, ac- cording to the class of 1987: We ' re Golden , Whatever turns you on , Party , Can ' t deal with it , I ' ll rip your heart out, (for those of you who like to get right to the point), Get a clue, For God ' s sake, Frodo lives, It ' s casual, That ' s cool , (or coo-elle), and (of course), the favorite of all sayings- Get a life. Now you ' ll never be at a loss for words. Favorite Saying Let ' s face it, any saying can be worn through with time. Flere are the cream of the crop of bad sayings. At the top of the list: You ' re bumming . The four runners up are as follows: whassup? , Fley hon , Dur, and, Flappnin ' . Other win- ning phrases included: Do it , Like-wow , Same difference , Yay , Oh my head , Gag me with a spoon , totally! . ( Valley went out so long ago!) and, of course: Wicked Awesome! Least Favorite Saying Guys , you ' ll be happy to know that you have been voted the favorite thing. (Girls, how cliche!). The three runners up were: parties, Sugarloaf ' 86, and money. The class of 1987 also enjoys rock concerts and boating, not to mention dancing. Other favorite things of the class of 1987 include: the Tazmanian Devil, Ipswich, graduating, blondes, the brat pack, the movies, rock ' n ' roll, and (of course), weekends. Another favorite is the one and only - romance (sigh). There are some things you can just do with- out. For example, rap songs on the radio, homework on Fridays, cafeteria food, col- lege applications, Ipswich, school, popularity, cold winters. Joan Collins and her glitzy ward- robe, avocados, graduating, not graduat- ing. Mondays, the clientele at Fantasy ' s, rain on weekends, getting caught, having to work on Friday nights, SAT ' s, and (last but not least), Mr. T. You will surely find, after the essays and interviews and applicatians are done, and Spot and Fang are all caught up, the social scene has set- tled down, the last set is struck the final final is finished, and your last Transcript has gone to press, that we all know you will go on to do great things, start- ing with cleaning your room. I ATE IT JUST THE SAME: EXPERIENCES AT IPSWICH HIGH I muddled down the hallway, tired, as usual. The voices were in my ears, their colors bombarded my eyes. You-Are-Here, Ipswich High. WELCOME!!! I went to my class, familiar, yet nameless faces file to their seats, yapping to each other. We ' re pretty much happy students here at Ipswich. That ' s good. The teacher walked in and it began, another extension of our collective consciousness. Five days a week, nine months a year. Every class seems to have its own distinctive personality, depending, of course, upon the degree of alienation between teacher and student. You either relate or you don ' t. Simple. It tends to affect the whole course. Ah well, it makes no difference to me, time is mud. So the day trickled on and it was finally time for lunch. Good, I thought, food ... no tension. Cafeteria lunch periods can be real intriguing places. There are four of them here at Ipswich. All are unique. The cafeteria becomes, suddenly, a scale model of the student body as a whole. With each class and culture represented, we act like seperate cells in a single writhing organism. I love it. The big doors yawned open and we responded with a stampede. By sixth period, you can get real hungry and I joined them in the ol ' push and shove. The food assembled by our new cafeteria staff looked vaguely disturbing to me, but nevermind, I ate it just the same. Soon enough, the bell rang and lunch was over. We filed out of the cafeteria leaving it in a total mess, discarded ice cream wrappers were everywhere, milk cartons, cellophane bags and protoplasmic slime. And what did we care? We do have janitors after all. The first thing a foreign student notices about our school Is it ' s size. ( My Gawd! Our GYM ' S 4 times as big as this one! ) It ' s tiny and poorly designed; but that ' s okay, it ' s what makes us unique. We may not like each other but certainly, we at least know each other. It ' s one big family like it or not. Our ' s is the school that looks like it was drawn up on the back of a coffee napkin. Our ' s is the school with T.V. commercials on the walls, the only one like it around. We have an identity all to our own. From one end of the spectrum to the other, We-Are-Here. The last two periods eased by and presently, the day had ended. I was one step closer to grad- uation. How strange, I thought Graduation from this place! The overwhelming presence in my life for the past four years, soon to come to an end, like the day itself. The mechanics of life. Some students have grown to resent this school and the people in it and I suppose that ' s understandable. But not me, for better or for worst, our school has been an experience for me and that ' s what it ' s all about, experience! (You dig it, man? ) I ' ll never forget Ipswich High, how could I?
