Ipswich Public Library Ipswich, Massachusetts THE WEATHERVANE 1 9 8 6 Each one of us, at one point in our lives, has looked to other sources to tell us something about ourselves or about those cir- cumstances or people who directly affect us. We have turned to horoscopes to predict our future or to look for promising prophecies. We even look to fortune cookies for an assuring word that our futures will be happy and fruitful. Predicting events has become so com monplace that every day we tune into trained men predicting tomorrow’s weather on television. Will it be beach weather? Or will it snow? Most important of all, will school be canceled?! But in the end, we have only ourselves and our past to turn to for glimpses into the future. This yearbook. The Weathervane of 1986, is, therefore, dedicated to our past, but most of all, it is dedicated to the future of the Class of 1986. It will be our “Forecast for the Future.’’ f Good Luck to All! . . . And when we were Juniors in 1984. Now Se- niors in 1985 and 1986. UNDERCLASSMEN, JUNIORS NOW SENIORS. Picture the Class of 1986 as Un- derclassmen in 1983. . . . “IT WILL BE . . . Before school ends, Summer begins, and Summer usually means one thing to us; CRANE’S BEACH! We all flock there to soak up the sun and socialize with our friends because the beach seems to be the only cure for our sudden “illnesses”. Then finally freedom: the end of exams. We are able to join those in pursuit of the perfect tan without the burden of asking Kirsti to sign our notes. We may think our terms have ended, but the freedom is short- lived; soon we report to our Summer jobs. The lucky few are fortunate enough to work at the beach “it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it”. Some other establishments which thicken our wallets are Harvest Market, Cape Ann, The Parrish House, The Hellenic Center, Hill’s, Oscar’s, The D.Q., Chipper’s, Richdale’s, The Clam Box and so on. Though our jobs are many, we manage to find time for the pleasures of life: July 4th at the Castle, Polish Picnic, Greek Picnic, even Olde Ipswich Days, but the question always arises at 5 on Friday, “Where’s the Party?” And so goes the warm season for us in Ipswich. 5 Above: Taking some time out to enjoy the night are Becky Poirier and Jon Rice. OH WHAT Yes, wild women can be found anywhere . . . even at the prom! Above, from left to right are Bernie Barry, Jen Kincaid, Bethlee O’Connor, Chrissy Gianakakis, Chris Campus, Cathy Blais and Chris Fitzpatrick. A NIGHT! Clockwise from bottom left, Dodie Ingalls, Cathy Blais, Bernie Barry, and Barb Layman (in the shades) all bask in the sun at Crane’s Beach. Above: Jen Linehan . . . enjoying summer cheering practice? And Alyson Doherty, still smiling at double session Field Hockey, left. 8 After a storm, the surf at Crane’s is definitely UP!! From Left to Right: Captain Jo, Barb, and Captain Bethlee. Near Right: Faith Drown, Chris Rousseau, and Hollie Lawton take a break from cheering to check out some pictures. Left: Lisa Davidson cracks a Senior smile. .ifilt ' ’ sm a - Fall in Ipswich is not only one of the most interesting times of year but the most colorful as well. The first day of school soon arrives and the leaves begin to change from shades of green to brilliant hues of red and orange. New freshmen, decorated in their best clothes, hug the walls of the halls to make way for sometimes over-confidant Sophomores, rowdy Juniors and smooooth Seniors. When warnings sneak up on us at the half way mark of the quarter, we wake up and realize that we’re really back in school. Fall sports seasons start. Football posters appear around school, and the Seniors grab the option of sponsoring the first dance to raise money from the Freshmen who are sure to attend. It is a time of adjustment for all: New schedules, new teachers and for the students ' and Faculty, a new principal. This year we are becoming accustomed to many new faces, especially those of the workmen constructing a new roof and locker room. An enforced system of rules in 1985 has also changed our attitudes toward our school and toward our sometimes frequent absences. What conscientious I.H.S student would be caught without his or her student parent handbook? For entertainment we look forward to the annual Octoberfest at Don Bosco and the Topsfield Fair. Colombus Day is the first three day weekend of Fall and Thanksgiving is not far behind. The Fall season is also a time for celebrations: Halloween parties-where we ' re, supposed to wear a costume but seldom do, and a first for Ipswich: Homecoming. Though Fall in Ipswich is certainly different from the Summer season one similarity definitely exists: When the bell ending classes rings at 2: 1 1 on Friday, the familiar question soon arises . . . “Where’s the Party?!’’ FIRST DAY: SENIOR YEAR J First Day of school . . . SUMMER FACES CH-CH Senior year is finally here . . . and we all have to face the real world and our all too real transcripts. The hardest part of leaving is having to say goodbye to all of our friends who we ' ve grown up with ... but you can’t hide from the changes (Chris! right), you can only relax and enjoy the final year that we all share together. Like Barb and Sandi at McDonald- land (above). Growing up presented us with many changes . . . like BRACES. Above, 2 of Dr. Nelson’s victims, before (top) and after (bottom) the braces were removed . . . Dodie and Kirsti. 18 CHANGES . . . A Halloween Senior pasttime . . . We seemed to have come through the changes without a scratch, but only with the help of our close friends ... at the left, Jen Stevens nd Caroline Follansbee, tennis pros direct from the steaming courts of I.H.S. I 19 % THE “PLANE” TRUTH ABOUT THE CLASS OF ’86 IS . . . THEY’RE “AWL”RIGHT. R. MERULLO THE GREATEST CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CLASS OF ’86 IS THEIR FRIENDLINESS AND COOPERATIVE SPIRIT. K. SPELLMAN The Faculty Section is shorter this year, but that in no way diminishes our appreciation for all the help that the teachers and aides have given us throughout our years at IMS. So, we bid a fond “Farewell” to our teachers and wish them Good Luck in the future! Although there are many clubs at the Ipswich High, one of the most distinguished and respectable is the drama club, The Company”. The Company consists of students from their freshman year to their senior year, male or female. Its director is Mrs. Faust, and together with many blossoming young actors and actresses, they put on a great performance. The participants in the Co. rehearse every week and when a performance date is near, every day rehearsals are a necessity. These rehearsals begin at 6:oo pm. and may last until midnight. Even though I am not a direct participant in the Co., I do sell tickets and have watched the performers struggle to learn their lines. They are a very dedicated group! Time, patience and talent are required to succeed as a member of the Co., and along with parental and peer support, the Co. has proved once again to be a fantastic choice as an in- school activity. - Keisha Anderson ES ACTIVITIES ACTI OEA Sandi Kalina, Heidi Hunt, Becky Poirier, Cathy Blais, Lauren Lemansky, Amber Robinson, Chrissy Giana- kakis, Julie Pendexter, Paula Smith OEA stands for Office Education Association. It is a club offered in the High School for people interested in attaining a career in an office after graduation. Members must be currently taking a minimum of two business courses. As the year begins, the members have profitable sales to obtain money for the Annual Convention. At this conven- tion high school students from around Massachusetts com- pete in office and business fields. Some of the areas they compete in are accounting, typing, job interview and re- cords management. Those who receive the highest three scores in each category continue on to the National Con- vention. Since Ipswich High has had OEA, students have gone on to the National Competition. OEA gives one many opportunities to get an early start in a business-oriented career. I would greatly encourage any student interested in the business courses to join OEA next year. OEA Pledge We are met in a spirit of friendship and good will as we prepare for lives of service in office occupations. We work together to attain the goals of O E A and pledge our loyalty to our nations. SLEEPING TWISTING 80 81 Wisdom comes with winters. -Oscar Wilde Winters in Ipswich are snowy, cold, sometimes rainy, and very, very bleak. The days seem endless because they are all so similiar. Advisors tell students to plan dances and other activities during the Winter months to break up the monotony and to dispell the doldrums. Basketball games are the only source of entertainment outside of movies and, oh yea, skiing. Skiing in the Winter is the equivalent of hanging out at Crane ' s in the Summer. Ski bums are as common as beach bums in Ipswich. When skiiers reminiscence they ask such questions as Was Loon the mountain where you ran over me?”, or, “Was that the time you came home with the cast?”. A fun sport? Indeed it is. And an expensive one at that. Once a skiier spends a year’s worth of savings on skis, boots and bindings he has to face the cost of a lift ticket. Weli, there’s always Hamilton Hill, or is it Hamilton Bump? And a prime source for skiier’s scrapbooks? The annual Ski Trip! Strange things happen when a group of skiiers from Ipswich are set loose on the slopes for a weekend . . . and set loose on an innocent hotel that same night. Chuck Holman, Rick Storer? They were never quite the same after the skiier’s lost weekends . . . But, the skiiers have to return to Ipswich someday . . . and during the Winter there’s not much welcoming them back. (Maybe that’s why they go skiing in the first place.) Movies at the Sack 6 always seem to be popular . . . The House of Pizza and Chick’s always seem to be more attractive around 11:00 on Saturday nights . . . and then there’s . . . and then there’s . . . well, then there’s . . . skiing. But Winter, however bleak it may be, does yield events popular to all who attend the High School. The Christmas Cotillon for Juniors and Seniors always seems to end up without a bang ... at least it fills up a Saturday night. The Senior Christmas Party occurs the Friday before vacation. At the Christmas Party the Seniors receive gifts from the class. This year the whole Class of 86 was given a prom cruise. We’re still waiting for Santa to drop that off in May. And definitely. Winter brings VACATION. The first Real Vacation of the year. Christmas brings presents and New Year’s Eve brings A PARTY! Usually the New Year’s Eve memories have to be good enough to last through January and into February until someone throws a party honoring February vacation. Mid- Terms . . . Valentine’s Day and the balloons with the messages attached make February a slightly warmer Winter month. And March? March leads to April and April leads to SPRING!!! Campus Spring: The Season between Winter and Summer, The first stage and The freshest period. The first stage appears to be the last for the Seniors at Ipswich High School ... at least the last stage of High School . . . and free education. When Spring blooms Senior thoughts turn towards memories. Though hard to believe, Seniors were once Juniors, Sophomores, and yes, even Freshmen. Walking down the hallways, laughing about the past. Seniors find themselves bumping into 8th graders on a tour of the High School. New Freshmen?? Yes . . . Too quick and Too Soon. When Senior skip day rolls around Its the closest house with no parents home and a dismissal note for Toni. 80 Seniors all have a doctor’s appointment at 10:30? The Graduating class, when Spring begins to turn a young man ' s fancy, are united under a name. Their name ... a simple 4 number digit: 1925, 1945, 1952 ... or 1986. Personalities so very different join together in a few final months of parties, worrying and cramming for the only thing that stands in the way of the Senior Prom, Class Day, and Graduation: Exams. All around the excitement builds. Lacrosse, baseball and softball, track, and spring soccer seasons are in full swing when the Seniors begin to choose prom gowns and dates for The Big Night. Juniors wait patiently for Graduation to arrive by occupying their time with the Junior Prom. After that early June afternoon when the last diploma is handed out, and the final scholarship awarded then a Junior’s waiting is over. He becomes a Senior at last! Moreover, the sophomores are at long last upperclassmen and the Freshmen? The Freshmen are no longer the youngest and have someone else to pick on! Class elections are held for a new Class President, Vice- President, Secretary and Treasurer. The National Honor Society inducts its’ new members at a schoolwide assembly. The ski jackets hit the closets for another season and out come the beach chairs, bathing suits and suntan lotion. Students eyes seem to wander more towards the window than towards any teacher or blackboard. Spring wasn’t made for kids to be locked up in a school still smelling of Winter. Maybe that’s why the days are longer: so after practice there’s still some daylight left to make a DQ run. If It’s sunny and warm outside then Summer can’t be too far away! Spring marks the end of an era . . . friends are remembered, yearbooks signed and money saved for next September when some will be entering colleges, others the armed services, and others a full-time job. Did any September ever seem so far away? Like the seasons. Seniors grow and change eventually becoming adults. Good Luck to all the adults in The Class Of 1986 . . . and if you’re not an adult yet . . . There’s still the Summer! Where is that party anyway???? Rex and Val will be married among the books of the Carrington collection, in accordance with the show’s main characterss. To spice up the slow plotline, Rex’s long lost Father “Jim” will enter mysteriously from the dictio- naries. Val will clean Rex’s dirty deeds up, changing his mischievous ways. But Jim poses some real problems for the couple’s wedded bliss. In real life, Steve Hunt and Susie Crawford shy away from televisions’ bright celebrity lives, full of parties and wrongdoings. Susie says she likes to stay away from the gossip columns. It makes sense therefore, thaf the actor and actress were voted Class Angels in their High School yearbook. The four stars of the new hit series on ABC, Motet, all studied at the same High School, Primetime has just discovered. Gary Mastrangelo, the bungling maitre’d, and Jen Madden, the popular waitress “Boopsy” were both voted Class Blushers in their High School yearbook. Veteran theatre star Cathy Blais, who plays the cunning “Claudia”, and Kevin Kiesal, the brilliant actor who plays the very sly “Ricardo” were together voted Most Congenial. On the left: Rich O’Bri- en and Tina Parent. On the right: Steve Hunt, Susie Crawford. Although CbS’s mini-series, i’m Me You ' re You, has been picked up as a series, stars Rich O’Brien and Tina Parent will not be returning. Rumor has it that Rich has been asked to star in “Raider’s of the Lost Ark, part 52” at an undis closed amount. O’Brien is also considering a new comedy role written for him by actor director producer Steven Spielberg. Tina Parent, also in demand, has committed herself to a starring role in an upcoming series on ABC entitled Zoo. Tina will play a zoologist whose best friend is a very intelligent ape. For now, the two super- stars plan to accompany each other to their High School reunion. Both were voted Most Attractive in their yearbook. Below: The Most Bizarre Female in the Class of 1986, Marie Donaldson, now shown, Tom Mayo, most bizarre male. Today, the two athletes have taken the sportsworld by storm. Soucy signing a multimillion dollar contract to endorse the new line of Nike basketball shoes for women, and Farfaras netting a contract as the new Aqua-Velva super- star. Besides flashing a clean shave on the tube, “Foo” could be the New En- gland Pats’ newest star. Senior Celebrities seem to be in the news this year as Class Spazzes Dar- ren Brockelbank and Bernadette Barry prepare for their flight as the first teenaged astronauts in space. All wired up; Mayo, LaCourse Back in High School when the now infa- mous Hacker Brothers were voted Com- puter Whizzes, Tom Mayo, now alias “Modem Mayo’’, and Tony LaCourse, alias Floppy Disk Fred’’, were just the normal run of the mill kids interested in Hardware, Software and anything in be- tween. But, after the publication Of their autobiography. Modem and Floppy prove to be far ' from your basic run of the mill kids. In their recent book, written while in prison, they admit to hacking their way into Hugh Hefner’s computer and chang- ing all the Playboy bunnies into tailless trenchcoated waiters. Said Modem, “We were ' only hacking for more modesty!” They look tame here, but Class Flirts Paul Nikas and Chris Fitzpatrick have just been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as flirting with the most people ever: Paul alone flirted with 1000 centerfolds . . . while they were still sta- pled in.
