It is not often that a man can command respect, admiration, and instill that hint of fear in students all at the same time. Not often does it happen that students receive an authoritative figure who can arouse so much enthusiasm, inovation and drive without sacrificing the individuality and comforting security of a first name basis. Here at the Ipswich High School we have been exposed to a diverse group of people who have added flavor and spice to our lives; but few have had as great an impact on our high school education as Mr. McKenzie. Through our experiences at the I.H.S. we have come to predict his arrival by his ever present keys and the quick dispersion of menacing groups. He has his other peculiarities: Nobody could quite look over his glasses the way he does, or lean back in that chair at his desk without falling over, and better still who could possibly perfect the duplication of his signature. Mr. McKenzie, you have bought our raffle tickets, eaten our pancakes, worn our carnations and measured us for the caps and gowns which we now don. You have held our class together in the most turbulent times always keeping our heads above water and our eyes on land. Now we ask our final favor of you. The class of 1981 has overwhelmingly voted you the recipient of the dedication of our yearbook. Please accept this as our apology for the headaches, ulcers, and any inconvenient pains we may have caused you. Your memory will be as vivid in our minds ten years from now as it is on this day; as for us, you have only to open this book and the memories will flow from its pages. Here ' s to memories! The class of 1981 j MR. PETER O’ROURKE Math Department “Originality excites curiosity by its rar- ity. -H. Larent He who has the esteem of others is a man much sought after; as is our Mr. O’Rourke. Mr. “Pete O’Rourke left us in March of this year after a teaching career at Ipswich High School of seven years. In the past four years he has be- come a friend, a teacher and an all around “cool guy. He has taught many of us the basic skills of math through algebra, trigonometry, calculus and fin- ite math. Mr. O’Rourke has been our homeroom bell for two years now. How many times have we heard, “C’mon, get to your homerooms, ’’ or “Where do you belong? only to find once we were dispersed he and his colleagues were forming their own aggregation in the front foyer. With these memories, and countless more, we will remember you, Mr. ORourke. Good Luck in Wisconsin. J.C. V The Meeting Waters Close beside the meeting waters, Long stood as in a dream, Watching how the little river Fell into the broader stream. Calm and still the mingled current Glided to the waiting sea; On its breast serenely pictured Floating cloud and skirting tree. And I thought, “o, human spirit! Strong and deep and pure and blest. Let the stream or my existence Blend with thine, and find its rest!” I could die as dies the river. In that current deep and wide; I would live as live its waters. Flashing from a stronger tide. A long time ago, in a galaxy far away existed the freshman class of 1981; and so existed the new science-fiction movie ’STAR WARS’. This film sparked a trend of galaxy greats. Speaking of science, NASA made space history sending the ’Space Voy- ager’ to photograph Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Traveling in space was not much more expensive than here on Earth in an automobile. The price of gas was about GOd per gallon. Keeping warm was another expense. Heating oil was 47(t a gallon. Meanwhile, the freshman class — the largest ever to enter IHS — was adjusting to its new environment. Just as Ipswich High School became familiar to them, an exchange trip to Bondy, France was originated. Some students experienced extreme cul- ture shock in the foreign land while others merely became cultured. And another item was originated. Students developed a new outlet for creativity and communication in the Ipswich Chronicle — the Ramblin’ Clam’ was born. Many have been steamed or fried by news articles, but for the most part the Clam has been a favorable asset to the school. Another asset to the school was the Varsity Football squad. They blitzed and blocked their way to the Super Bowl title over Newburyport, 54-13 in 1977. tbe John I m not crazy about him, eitiier Even thelHS ' Company’ became reknown state-wide when its produc- tion ' Chinamen ' in the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild Festi- val clinched the winning title with Cohasset in 1978. However, not everyone in the world was so fortunate. Great celebri- ties such as Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, John Henry Bonham, Peter Sellers, and most recently John Lennon met their mortal end, but remain immortal in many hearts. But devastating losses touched our community as well; more than we could endure at times. The losses of Kitty Robertson, Larry Levesque, John Equi, Daniel McArdle, and Rocky caused tremendous grief and sorrow — although they are considered immortal in our humble town. Yet grief seemed to be the trend of the times. The great Hills fire accompanied by the Norris fire and the deaths of three of their family members resulted in many tears and frazzled emotions. This grief spread nation-wide when Iranian terrorists siezed the U.S. Embassy in Iran taking 52 Americans hostages. A long 14 1 2 months was endured. The time seemed to drag . Boom! Did the Iranians drop the ' big one ' on the U.S. ? No, it was the Mount St. Helens volcanic erruption! This natural disaster left many homeless and covered with ashes. Yet the Middle East was a hotter spot. The Russians invaded Afganistan. As a result, young adults, (both men and women), wer e enco raeed to visit their local Post Office for Draft Regis- ' the 1980 Summer Olympics — held in Moscow- America and a few of her loyal allies. I I However, the Winter Olympics — in Lake Placid, New York- — were outstandingly successful for Americans. They provided the icing on the American Bake of ' Russian Animosity ' when the U.S. Hockey team skated their way to the sold defes tin s the g viets. 4-3 — a dream come true! Meanwhile, i Girls ' Varsity Basketball i li hey siezed first place in their state division [ irTT . ' was achieved by still more Ijxrm ites. The ' Fools ' , their musical career playing at IHS dances, cut their firsf bunjziSold Out ' . They were destined to be famous; the world and produced a second album. razing of education feared Despite the nation’s political, economic, or social situations, most of the people’s attention was drawn to the ’boob tube’ — especially to the two T.V. treats, ’Gen- eral Hospital’ and ’Dallas’. With Laura getting raped. Heather accidentally tak- ing the LSD she intended to give Diana, and Rick breaking up with both Leslie and Monica, etc who could help but keep their eyes glued to the screen from 3:00 to 4:00 every weekday afternoon? And wasn’t the suspense as to “who shot J.R. ’’just terrible in ’Dallas’? (By the way, do you think Luke and Laura will ever get back together?) Nevertheless, most Taxachusetts citizens’ attention focused on their pocket- books. Referendum question 2 — Proposition 2V2 — received an overwhelming (2-1) ’YES’ vote. It was the people’s plea to reduce taxes; however, many social services and educational programs will be eliminated — threatening the jobs of many. Already, the Junior High School is without an interscholastic sports program. Ronald Reagan also received an overwhelming acceptance — into the White House. He defeated incumbant Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Presidential Election. As the oldest president ever to take the office, Reagan intends to “get the government off the backs of the people”. Hopefully he’ll do something about the skyrocketing gasoline and heating oil prices. One must now pay an amazing $1.30 per gallon of gas, and shocking $1.27 per gallon of heating oil! But do not despair! The hostages have been set free after 444 days of captivity, returning to the tune of ’Tie a Yellow Ribbon ’Round the Old Oak Tree’. . . . And as we march to ’Pomp and Circumstance’, we have served our time. Our class was fortunate enough to have two people who made this distinction quite clear to us. They cared enough to make certain that our high school years were pro- ductive within the classroom and beyond. They were successful. Mr. Bell came to us early in our freshman year. Why, we still don ' t know. His tranquility and sin- cere concern rejuvinated us even in the despair of losing hall decorating for the third time. Arduosly working in the background, this man guided us to our profits, and through our losses. He was there with us for four years, the Junior Prom, the Cotil- lion, and eventually graduation. Mrs. Quinn joined us in our senior year when her innovative thinking and tight control of the reins of our class were desperately needed. She advised our class with an ease and authority unique to her, and was to eventually become respected, dependable, and truly admired. Thank you both for your time, your effort and your understanding. We dedicate this page to you. This page is a small reminder of the role you played in our school years. We can only hope that ours will not be the last class you touch in so special a way. LEON ‘ROCKY” HASSERLATT A person’s true worth is always most evident after he is gone. In the past year a great loss was felt by the Ipswich High School. When Rocky passed away we iost not only a bus driver, handyman, and the aroma of pipe tobacco but also a uniquely sincere individual. Rocky was probably best known as our favorite bus driver. His amazing quality of eliminating tension and nerves before even the most formidable games made him an overwhelming favorite amongst students and administrators. His war stories, jokes, and playful hollering made even the longest trips interesting. These trips and his daily interaction with us as students live on so vividly that in our minds Rocky will always live. J.C. Photo courtesy of Mrs. Leon Hasserlatt. Improvement is the measure for success. The next step is tough de- fense. ‘Go for goal!’ We actually had two seasons in one. The first half was the result of a new team with a new coach. We had mistakes tWith much to learn. The second half en- tailed great improvement with posi- tive results. Hudson, J. Gauthier DEAR MBS. LOVELY, I I L On Veterans Day 1980 as we sat assembled in the gym, a kind, familiar face approached the microphone. You cleared your throat and gathered your thoughts, as we the audience sat hushed. The quote you read that Veterans Day was written by Paul Roche and was entitled The Greatness of Man. A theme you genuinely believed in. Here is that quote which we now read with an understanding made to us through your teaching. We need to be told that man is but a limited and contingent creature, subject to sudden disrupting forces. Success is not finally to be measured by fame or material prosperity. Human greatness consists ultimately in nobly accepting the responsibility of being what we are; human freedom, in the personal working out of our fate in terms appropriate to ourselves. Though we may be innocent, we are all potentially guilty, because of the germ of self-sufficiency and arrogance in our nature. We must remember always that we are only man and be modest in our own conceits. Our place in the total pattern of the cosmos is only finite. That is not to say that it may not be glorious. Whatever our circumstances, we can achieve and endure through to essential greatness. It is not what fate has in store for us that matters, but what we do with it when it comes. There may be suffering, but no abiding hopelessness, no power, no imposition, no catastrophe, can uproot the personal dignity of each human being. The seeming caprice and unfairness of life, striking down some and pampering- others, is only the beginning of of the Great Encounter. Both the choice and the desitny are ours” The words you spoke that day were not new to many of us; we had heard them numerous times in your classroom. Mrs. Lovely, you claimed to be a tyrant, a cold heartless person, but we saw through you. You were no more than an English teacher who wanted to reach out to us, your pupils, and share that which ga ve you so much enjoyment. Now, as you retire, we reluctantly say goodbye. After twenty years of teaching at Ipswich High it is hard to beleive that you are leaving us. We are certain however, that your teaching will never be over. Sincerely, The Class of 1981 J.C. 102 THE IPSWICH RIVER O this is the winding Ipswich Flowing slowly down to the sea, Rising up in the Topsfield naarsl EvJ widening on its way ’Twit disappears in the roari At first it is a narrow brook, Winding through the meado And through the MaFsKes Then as it speeds on its hastenia i Larger it grows Until at length With a finiu roar and resounding crash Over the dam it surges onto the sharp rocks below. Thence it rushes under stone bridges ’Til reaching the marshes it spreads itself Into creeks and inlets Until it becomes A maze of intricate channels. Flowing slowly along Past the white beach Out to the sea. Richard Hodgkins, 1921 . IK H tr d n 53 jji ■ J ■ I SCHOOL COMMITTEE Anthony Christopher, Chairman George Jewell, Edward J. The immediate left hand corner of the Guidance department is Donna’s territory. In this corner you will find her hard at work preparing our senior transcripts, typing our recommendations, and ar- ranging, rearranging and finalizing our scheduales. We want you to understand, Donna, how much you are appreciated not only because of your hard work, but because of the precious gift you bring to school with you every morning: YOUR SMILE. It’s your trade mark, so take care of it. We are graduating and having to say Good Bye. We will miss you, but next year you will have another senior class to prepare for graduation, and the class of 1984 to nurture. That’s when they too will come to know how lucky they are. INTRODUCING THE SENIOR CLASS — We Even Dress For Dinner 135 In January of 1981, the Ipswich High School welcomed its newest exchange student, sixteen year old Juan Carlos Bacarreza, who entered the school as a junior. He is from Santiago, the capital of Chile in South America. Through the Open Door Student Exchange Program, Juan Carlos was able to enroll in the Ipswich school system and resided with two different families in Ipswich during his stay in America. In the Spring, he participated in the Ipswich Youth Soccer Program and was a member of the Boys’ Track Team. At home, in Santiago, he has six brothers. Enthusiastically he added, “Yes, and they are all married!’’ When asked what he thought of the high school, he re- plied, “It’s nice, but there is a lot of homework!’’ He then added that he appreciated the kindness and generosity of all the students and teachers. 136 m THE WAY WE WERE. 137 mTRON ADVERTISING CONTRACT I ' m 17 . im This will authorize you to publish: □ My name as a patron iH An advertisement ! 1 Other in the llIL yearbook. □ Cash We agree to pay $ □ heck [Q ill us [] Full Page □ 3 4 01 2 [] 1 3 U 1 8 □ 1 16 Name of Advertiser or Patron (type or print)_ WiHiftm Sh if 3p %re f(itDbe Ihfiaire.
