IPSWICH Ipswich Put ' -; r I t. Ipswich, ,V: IPSWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF ’80 The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps th e better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, 1 doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost Reprinted by permission of Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc. 3 DEDICATION “He would not deny that he was influenced by human passions and human feelings — possibl y by human weaknesses; but this he would say, that if ever the fire of self-importance broke out in his bosom, the desire to benefit the human race in preference effectually quenched it.” Charles Dickens used these words to describe his endearing character Mr. Pickwick, in his novel Pickwick Papers. They are also fitting words to describe the man to whom we dedicate our yearbook. Almost everybody in Ipswich knows this man, and all who do care about him. As he walks down the hall, he greets each student because he knows them all. He meets every new school class or team as enthusiastically as if it were the first in his career. As he announces on the intercom that football tickets are on sale for Saturday’s game, the whole school comes to a halt, entranced by his booming tones. On a trip to France with Ipswich students, he cried as he stood at the World War II memorial at Normandy Beach. He is smiling and warm and kindly and very human. And he acts as if he really likes us. We dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Roundy, Ipswich’s own version of lovable Mr. Pickwick. He was the overwhelming choice of the Class of 1980. 5 V 6 7 IN MEMORY OF JOHN EQUI A good friend and classmate died in a tragic car accident. He was a carefree, fun - loving guy. He was quiet in times of sorrow, always there with a joke to brighten even your bleakest days. He was an excellent kid. He’d always give you a ride home, joking about his car on the way. He had just turned seventeen and would have graduated with the Class of 1980. A lot of people lost a close, dear friend, John C. Equi. Perhaps forethought could have saved his life, perhaps not, but from this tragedy hope comes that maybe another tragedy like this can be avoided. THE BAND wmsm CHRISTMAS COTILLION . . . kids went to the Pavilion and got more than just a view of the ocean . . . Crane’s Beach was hotter at night than in the day THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN . . . . . . Quint’s corner was more important than Quint’s . . . kids would rather eat at Chicks than at home . . . the Drop-In Center was a place that everybody dropped out of after freshman year . . . the great challenge for freshmen was making it into the Strand to see an R-rated film THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN . . . . . . we were so deeply “into” leather that the high school began to look like a Mafia hang-out . . . the biggest events in the world were the ordeal of the Iranian hostages and the United States Olympic hockey team’s victory over the Russians . . . Trans- Am, Camaros, running, and biking were the only acceptable means of transportation . . . kids were being entranced by The Who, Cars, Bad Company, Aerosmith, Eagles, Foreigner, Van Holen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Jimmy Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Boston, Styx, and The Fools . . . the biggest choice in our lives was which class ring to choose . . . our heros were Pope John Paul II, Eric Heiden, and Mr. Bill and . . . our villains were Ayatollah Khomeini, the Shah of Iran, and Mr. Sluggo . . . the biggest event in school was a fourth period food fight . . . the biggest events in the town were the fires . . . there were more wooden clogs in Ipswich than in Holland THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN . . . . . . perms were popular . . . the most widely-used words in our vocabulary were: wicked, excellent, no way, yeah right, pig out, excuuse me (and others which were unprintable) . . . General Hospital caused us to debate the really important questions: Will Laura tell Scottie that Luke raped her? Will little Allan Quartermain, Junior like his new playroom? . . . we felt naked without a comb in our back pockets . braids were back . . . the highlight of a field trip was a pit-stop at McDonalds and the pits was school lunch . . . The man of real excellence improves other people in five ways. Some he transforms like rain in season; for others perfects an excellence that already exists; for Sthers he brings success to innate capac- ity; for others he provides answers to questions; and others derive benefit in their own way. These are the five ways in which the man of real excellence improves other people. To act without knowing why; to do things as they have always been done, without asking why; to engage in an activity all one ' s life without really understanding what it’s about and how it relates to other things — this is to be one of the crowd.
