Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1979 volume:

UAC ( EOFFf e. ' t Though we have drifted apart In distance, I always think of you as Being right here . . . Though we have different interests, Our experiences are still the same. And, Though we have new friends. It is our old continuous friendship That means the most to me . . . Susan Polis Schultz Ipswich High School Class Of ‘79 It is to this upward striving, This arduous and private journey, That we dedicate our yearbook. — Deahn Berrini All our thoughts. Once comfortably niched in the Predictable present of Ipswich High School, Must now change, contort. stretch themselves up and away to stray, search stumble, soar, converge and disperse — then To abide illuminant In our families, careers, diversions. Of the inconstant Future. 2 3 Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as pos- sible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exer- cise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what vir- tue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be careful. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nur- ture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less that the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Death is so final; the shock is so terrible. The memories, at least, live on. Most people remember Larry as always smiling, a young man with a carefree air. We remember him in his Styx tee shirt telling his enjoyable stories concerning the concerts he frequently attended. Larry was a good story-teller, and his stories live on even though the story-teller has gone. 37 i y 1 m j 1 mm li m ■ Senior Awards Deahn Berrini: Brown University Book Award Linda Shannon; Faculty Award Ellen Siegel: Bausch Lomb Harvard Book Award Faculty Award National Council Of Teachers Of English Award Debbie Dobson; Faculty Award Paula Theodosopoulos: DAR Award Bruce Lynn: Jewish War Veteran’s Award, Salem Evening News Student Athlete Award Jim Thoen: Boys’ State Tracy Perkins: Girls’ State National Honors Society Deahn Berrini, Liza Paul, Bruce Lynn, Ellen Siegel and Tracy Perkins 43 YEARBOOK 1979 Editor-in-Chief Artist Photographer Contact Treasurer Subscriptions Ad Chairman Paula Theodosopoulos George Karalias Owen Lloyd Ellen Siegel Cathy Manning Bruce Lynn SECTION EDITORS Opening Activities Faculty Sports Seniors Celebrities Marybeth Follansbee Karen Robie Liza Paul, Deahn Berrini Ellen Mackey Keri Cordima Elizabeth Dallas William Balboni CONTRIBUTORS Leslie Sanders Kander McCausland John Chmura John Quakers Paula Markos Andrea Sweeney Priscilla Ramsdell Sue Pimentel ADVISOR: ANTONIA MCMANANA Class Apple Polishers Laura Cuniff Steven Markos Best Dressed Glenn Wile Sally Palen Most Congenial Paula Theodosopoulos Most Attractive Paula Theodosopoulos Scott Shannon Most Likely To Succeed Tracy Perkins Bruce Lynn Most Talkative Dorothy Riddle Bruce Lynn Cori Deangelis Class Scholars Owen Lloyd Ellen Siegel Class Weasels Marybeth Murawski Jim Edwards 47 Jean Flaherty Bill Balboni Class Non Conformists Lianne Ames William Howard Ken Forman Dierdre Nirider Class Lovers Keri Cordima Tim McCarthy ftjr- Boyologist Annette Thibault mim Girlologist Mike Gajewski 49 Class Saints Most Gullible Debbie Robie George Karalias Deahn Berrini 50 Administration Joseph Rogers, Principal Charles McKenzie Assistant Principal Margaret Townsend. The debate on that question isn’t over yet, but if the early success of an Ipswich learning experiment is any indication, the answer probably will be “yes”. Project Open, an alternative program for unmotivated eleventh graders, has been underway for over a year, and stu- dents and teachers are enthusiastic about their progress. Housed in an isolated building on the grounds of Notre Dame Novitiate, Project Open students gather in two long rooms that resemble a workshop more than a classroom. The school is adequately furnished with comfortable seating for reading and facilities for a small engine shop. Students have yet to leave their marks on the walls with posted announce- ments and decorations, although schedules indicating who is doing what when are clearly visible, and a recent spread from the Boston Globe outlining career opportunities papers one wall. The students have many opportunities and often set up independent studies with a teacher of that particular subject. The student, though, must fill out a weekly schedule noting the amount of time spent daily on each course. Using the schedules, the directors can then insure that hourly credit requirements are being met. The teachers then fill out a weekly report on each student that notes conduct and ways in which the student’s behavior or work has been unsatisfactory. Parents, teachers, and students have access to these reports at any time. The project seems to have proven effective. The man of real excellence improves other people in five ways. Some he transforms like rain in season; for others he perfects an excellence that already exists; for others he brings success to innate capac- ity; for others he provides answers to questions; and others derive benefit in their own way. These are the five ways in which the man of real excellence improves other people. To act without knowing why; to do things as they have always been done, without asking why; to engage in an activity all one ' s life without really understanding what it ' s about and how it relates to other things — this is to be one of the crowd.
