IPSWICH HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK 1978 DEDICATION We, the class of 1978, dedicate this yearbook to: The Unsung Senior, who faithfully suffered through four years of Ipswich High School and — . . . went door to door peddling raffle tickets, . . . stamped endless hands at dances, . . . baked and helped sell the food at grocery store bake sales, . . . stood freezing: all night, day and weekend, sefling -Christmas trees, . . . helped to bake pies, deliver them and collect t money before Thanksgiving, . . . convinced people that they really needed to buy an!lpswich Tiger pennant. donated blood, or time, to the bloodmobile, drew, painted, hung up, or otherwise added to the hall decorations, helped clean up after the cotillion, collected attic treasures to sell at the flea market and book sale, stayed for assemblies and pep rallies to represent our class, went all over town collecting money for the patron drive (and then fhissed the pizza), gave their best to or supported the I.H.S, sport| mogram, and helped shape the personality of the I.H.S. cl of 1978 — not soon to be forgotten! - (J f J Quiet streets Gulls that cry and soar History stands still The ocean meets the shore Church spires reaching to the heavens Seventeenth century looms still active in weaving their story “Our Little Town This is our Ipswich as we will remember it. White ( 1916 - 1977 ) We are remembering a man who exemplified years of service to his community as a local dairyman, businessman and who, more recently, served briefly as selectman before his untimely death. As the symbol of the White Farms cow stood for the happy carefree days of the summer to every child in this community, so did Mr. White stand for integrity and friend- liness to every adult in this community. We honor him here as a part of Ipswich that will never be forgotten. Photo courtesy of House of Hinlin 6 SENIOR AWARDS 1. CLASS POLITICIAN Christine Mackey Richard Dudzisz ADIEU, MES AMIS What is the legacy of a High School Education ? This is a weighty question which wo could ponder profoundly. A diploma is only the visible and tangible proof of four years of learning. After it is firmly arranged in some scrapbook or frame, to be shown to approv- ing relatives and friends, we are left with ourselves, our minds, our capabilities and our skills. Have we learned, along with our academic knowledge, how to live and to share, how to care and to give, how to love and to grow? Are we witness to the truths, and in- spirational ideas implanted in our minds during these past four years? Hopefully, as we say goodbye, we can look with confidence to our future, knowing that our teachers have tried their very best to impart to us, not only learning, but values, convictions and ideals. Each one of us has taken a different direction in terms of extra-curricular activities. To some, it has been the playing field and the gym. To others, it is the stage, the lights and the music. Yet to others, it is the marching rhythm of the band, the harmonizing of voices, or the creating of self-expressive works of art. Now, we are finally standing together as one group, for we have one thought in mind, and one goal to attain. This goal is the esteemed title of Graduate, the wearing of our cap and gown, the acceptance of the long-awaited diploma, the smiles on the faces of our parents and friends and the approving glances of faculty members and advisors. Our high school days have come to a close, and each of us is left with his own personal thoughts. Perhaps, without even realizing it we have become the adult that the outside world demands. Each one of us has attained a measure of personal growth. Perhaps the German poet, Johann Schiller, expressed it best when he wrote, It is only through the morning gate of the beautiful that you can penetrate into the realm of knowledge. That which we feel here as beauty, we shall one day know as truth. JeantK’ I . PROJECT ADVENTURE 1 i mTA - i fmmmrn THE COMPANY The Company ' s production of William Shakespeare ' s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT ' S DREAM was certainly the most ambitious, and to some, the most successful, show which its director and members have undertaken and presented. Undoubtedly, it was our largest show, in relation to cast size. Our fall show will also be remembered as it marks the longest rehearsal schedule to date — almost four months. This is not to say that these weeks were dull or boring. Those long nights in the dreary school cafeteria were en- livened by many incidents such as our Mr. Wonderful Pageant, our queen ' s sleep walk- ing habits, the whining of our cast member Benjamin, a certain cast member ' s un- controllable laughing fits, and the ever present fear that some unfortunate fairy may literally come tripping down that dreaded ramp. We were most grateful to have the talents of Taylor Armerding and John Richards. Their performances added greatly to the Shakespearean atmosphere of the play. When the director, cast and crew of A MIDSUMM ER NIGHT ' S DREAM look back, we will remember those long months of rehearsal, but even moreso, we will remember the four rewarding nights that made it all worthwhile. MANNING W. WOOLWORTH CO. Ipswich, Mass. A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. I am arrived at last in the presence of a man so real and equal that I may drop even those undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, which men never put off, and may deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness with which one chemical atom meets another. Sincerity is the luxury allowed, like diadems and authority, only to the highest rank, THAT being permitted to speak the truth, as hav- ing none above it to court or conform unto. Every man alone is sincere. At the en- trance of a second person, hypocrisy begins. We parry and fend the approach of our fellow man by compliments, by gossip, by amusement, by affairs. We cover up our thought from him under a hundred folds ... But a friend is a sane man who exercises not my ingenuity, but me. My friend gives me entertainment without requiring me to stoop, or to lisp, or to mask myself. A friend therefore is a sort of paradox in nature. I who alone am, I who see nothing in nature whose existence I can affirm with equal evidence to my own, behold now the semblance of my being, in all its height, variety, and curiosity, reiterate in a foreign from; so that a friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature. 149 SENIORS The Times We Had Were Very Few, We Didn ' t Have You Long, The Greatest Class We Ever Know, Each One Of You So Strong. Nickname Tracey There is a time in every man ' s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernal of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what he can do, nor does he know until he has tried. — Ralph Waldo Emerson IPSWICH PUBLIC LIBRARY 313.414513 1 ♦ Aey . o 3 2122 0007 4497 For Reference Not to be taken from this room rMtliHli; £, ' ' .V
