3L 1976 v .4 i i m£ let rou know how things are going, on this two hundredth birthday Dear George Wa ' sjlii I writing to of our independ hce. Some people are Jcallihg tfiis the buy -centennial because everything from boots to bananas is being sold with flags and banners. Flags are still being used by politicians, but lately they have’been saying things like I am not a crook , rather than all men are created equal ’. The latest hit song is no longer Yankee Doodle ; have you heard I Want to Rock and Roll All Night, and Party Every Day , or White Punks on Dope ? I wonder if your patriots at Valley Forge and Fort Ticonderoga would fight with more courage if they could see how their new nation has developed, or would they trade their guns for a cold beer? The question of freedom still is with us, Mr. Washington. There was a girl who wanted the freedom to die, this year, but the courts and some machines said no. In Boston, schools are struggling with another freedom issue, ancl our freedom to control our OWN lives through government is threatened by both the government, and our own inaction. There seems to be some sort of awakening going on though about the land America itself. The people are pushing for tough environmental laws, and we are traveling by bike and van all over the nation, seeking out the beauty in America. In Ipswich we have made a pond in back of one of the town ' s oldest houses, built a walkway by the river, held parades and parties, built a flag pole on Town Hill, and published pamphlets, tapes and slides and stored them in our library so OUR children ' s children will see better who we are today. Jobs are scarce this year as America takes a stumble step forward into a new dir- ection. The space race against the Russians, is over. We travel WITH them now, and the jobs that accompanied that great industry have shrunk, as America searches for a new frontier, no longer Westward, but more inward, improving itself. The jobs of the future will likely be linked to pollution control and city planning; they will draw the creative young minds of today. I wish you could meet these seniors, 5 ] Mr. Washington. I think that you would approve of their staunch refusal to be covered up with Red, White and Blue gowns at graduation. They chose instead, green, maybe symbolic for a cleaner, greener America in the next one hundred years. Yours truly. £ Teacher, Bicentennial Course Taking time out to hear us was important to them. Guiding us through the laughter and the pain was a special talent of theirs. And lending a helping hand was something that came naturally to them. During the past four years at Ipwich High we are greatful to have found three such un- selfish individuals. Thus, we the class of 1976 wish to dedicate our yearbook, with love and appreciation, to our class advisors; Mrs. O ' Brien, Mrs. Quinn, and Mr. Storer. Thank you for c aring. 3 1976 Yearbook Staff Editor: Ann Paul Layout Editor: Kathy Parady Literary Editor: Debbie Markos Business Editor: Laura Siemasko Advertising: Dierdre Schoen Subscriptions: Venetia Constantine Patron Drive: Elaine Markos Photographers : Bruce Coulombe Marco de Dona Bruce Sinclair Photography Editor: Vicki Doud With many thanks to: Scott Stevens Tina Angell JoAnne Peatfield Laurel Parker Lisa Giest Lynda Poirier Leslie Day Matt Smyth Jim Penniman Jim Sotis Mr. Laakso Mr. Storer Mr. T ole os And with very special thanks to: Mrs. O ' Brien and Mr. McKenzie SENIORS Susan L. Cindy Budzianowski was chosen queen, while Matt Smyth was chosen as the king. The Junior Prom started off on a great note when the Hellenic Center was locked Saturday morning when it came time to decorate. Luckily an unlocked window was found. Our class got unified on junior sock day, by wearing extraordinary socks. The class got together again by wearing the traditional bows and havingthe tradi- tional Christmas party with Mr. Carey of course, as Santa Claus. 26 Remember the cheers that went up as the seniors caught the tiger after winning the third hall decorating contest in a row. This was the year of the new band uniforms, but most of the football players still couldn ' t find their way through the formation. The Seniors were great at selling things. Remember the bake sales and the bake sales of the freshman year? Then the candy, and finally pies and Christmas trees. Can anyone forget the little kids who helped the class sell the trees? A good number of the class were inducted as juniors into the National Honor Society. 28 Perhaps the best way to sum it up would be Twas a fun four years if only I was here. 29 Senior Superstars Class Scholars Ann Paul and Bruce Coulombe Class Blushers Erik Muench and Venetia Constantine Class Clowns Jimmy Marr and Marci Martel 30 Class Actors Alan Downing and Diana Small Class Flirts Leslie Day and Marco de Dona Class Musicians Scott Stevens and Barbara Todd Most Likely To Succeed Susan Perkins and Jim Penniman 31 Class Artists Mike Gerrish and Kathy Parady Most Congenial Lisa Giest and Chris Reagan Class Lovers Class Athletes Cindy Scherer and Ted Flaherty Bobby Moody and Lisa Corkum Most Talkative Jim Marr and Brenda Nikas Missing: Most School Spirit— Vicki Doud and Armand Michaud Best Dressed — Maureen McCraven and Kevin Pickul Most Guilible — Debbi Nelson and Bill Lewis Class Apple Polishers Sharon Wickstrom and Peter Radzinski Done Most For The Class Matt Smyth and Maureen McCraven Best Looking Lisa Corkum and Joe Couturier 33 Senior Honors 1. The summer started out on a slow note for the crew. There was never much to do except to help with that horror called a patron and ad drive. More than one Company member debated whether or not to hide in the halls when it came time to choose that crew! Some of the lucky people who stayed in school were treated to daily trips to the bakery downtown, and games of Facts in Five outdoors. Who can forget the midday raids on everyone ' s houses in search of period furniture. And the endless painting and washing of flats that were decreed ' streaky ' . Production week finally arrived, amidst many problems including the blowing of two of the light dimmers before the bulb size was checked. And what happened to top all that, but it was the hottest week of the entire summer. This can be guaranteed by the crew members who stayed all day trying to paint wallpaper on all of the flats. But finally the set was up and decorated and it was time to open the show. Playing to packed houses of 20 to 60 people in 100 heat for 5 nights may not sound worth it, but it certainly was. The show was great, and marked the first roles on stage for many of the actors. It was also the last for Danny Maher, a company stalwart. Many new crew members also worked the show. They got a first hand view of how hard a job a running crew can have trying to rearrange furniture on stage in the dark! More than once a chair or table was ' lost ' and out of place when the lights came up. They also got a chance to see the lighter side of The Company, when notes were places on- stage where the actors would be sure to see and read them. But, despite all of these mishaps, the show was a great success for the peo pie involved, and alot of fun too. Ann Paul Scott Stevens ' The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie ' was the biggest undertaking ever for The Company. It had a rather large cast of about 25 actors, plus crew members. It was also though, the most successful in terms of attendance. Thursday night the crew set up about 150 chairs as usual, but by 8:00 it was apparent that this wasn ' t going to be enough. This, coupled with almost full houses for the last 2 nights, was a welcome sight to those Company members who had participated in ' Towards Zero ' . It was also a tribute to the hard work of Publi- city Director, Alan Downing. ' Brodie ' also marked the first time that The Com- pany could use the new light board, and work with a budget. This meant no Patron Drive, a relief for many people. There were problems though in the production of ' Brodie ' , including a classroom complete with desks and chairs of 9 children. This was a feat on the High School stage, especially when combined with all of the other areas that had to fit on it. 52 Deahn Berrini will probably never forget the perils of being stuffed in- to a locker, expecially the night that her dress ripped. And no one will forget the mix up in the order of the scenes on Thursday night. The aud- ience might not have noticed, but there certainly were some tense mo- ments backstage until the show got back on the right track. All in all though, it must be said that Brodie ' was successful, from every aspect, for everyone who participated. 53 With its own optimism and pessimism, With its own corporeal fatigue And the spiritual one. With its happiness and its anguishes. To pick up in each moment something; Every day a lesson of life; To give and to receive. To know how to give, and how to receive To distinguish good from bad. Right from wrong. Honestly, To understand others and himself, Critique and self critique. To look at, to look for. To be intuitive, to discover; Never to say it is enough But always to say why? Because there is a why Behind everything. Surprise s and delusions; Little things of every day Big things of an experience, An experience called . . . A.F.S , Marco de Dona 54 SPORTS m Varsity Field Hockey I Junior Varsity Field Hockey The past two seasons of field hockey for Ip- wich High have been extremely fruitful. Both years, the Varsity Tigers have had winning seasons, enabling them to compete in the state tourney. Behind the leadership of Cindy Scherer and Tricia McSweeney, coaching of Linda Santoro, and assistance of Merry Eu- stace, the ' 75 - ' 76 Tigers scored their way to an 8-0-4 season, ending with an overtime de- feat by Holliston in the first round of the State Tourney. With the combined talents of the players from all four grades, the team worked well and proved itself against stiff competition from schools like Masco, North Andover, North Reading, Lynnfield and Amesbury. Kathy Parady Venetia Constantine Cross Country Cross Country is a sport for dedicated ath- letes because they have to run between 3 and 10 miles a day. The team ran through all types of terrain; fields, salt water marshes, private property, up graveyard steps, Spring Street, and Farley Ave. , not to mention the laps a- round the track and hop- ping up and down the football field. Boys W-0 L-13 Girls W-l L-9 Four years ago, there were no girls on the team. Today there is a complete Girls Var- sity Team. The girls started this year with a winning streak, but it was soon broken because of the many injuries. The boys on the team put a great deal of effort and ded- ication into their running. Although their efforts did not pay off to victories this year, they have formed the nucleus for a winning team next year. We hope to see more un- derclassmen running in future years, es- pecially girls, to keep the sport thriving in Ipswich. Dierdre Schoen Varsity Soccer W-2 L-ll T-l Improvement, yet with frustrating re- sults was the overall view of this year ' s season. The Soccer team had its youngest and least experienced team in its six year history; at the open- ing of the season there were but two sophomores who started, at the end there were five soph- omores and three juniors. Yet with an improv- ing defense giving up only half as many goals in the second half of the season, the Soccer team, captained by seniors Mark Hum- phrey and Chip Parker, played its most exciting match of the season in its last contest with North Andover and came from behind with a 2-2 score. 62 Junior Varsity Soccer W-9 L-2 T-l Award winners were: Most Improved -- Jon Leamy Most Valuable -- Mark Humphrey Coaches Award — Chip Parker Humphrey and Parker were also selected to play on the C. A. L. All-Star Team. Mr. Storer . ■ ' , Varsity Football W-8 L-2 To sum our season in two words, one would have to use pride and accomplish- ment, For ours was one of personal sat- isfaction in a team sport. After each contest, we could look back and say we had given it our all. And in sport, as in life those who give the effort, reap the reward. Football was our catalyst, it changed us from boys to men and, most importantly it gave us the confidence needed to become a winner . Jim Penniman Junior Varsity Football W-10 L-0 Girls Varsity Basketball W-17 L-0 State Tournament Northern Finalist 68 I ml atJ I P Jk m i .1 1 1C 1 Junior Varsity Basketball W-16 L-l Well, it was a great season. We had only two disappointments, and nineteen glorious wins. It must be said that this was defi- nitely one of the most unified girls ' basketball teams that ever hit the school. A record of 17-0 during the season shows how far teamwork has gotten us. Prac- tices as well as games were al- ways a challenge. Even with the energy crisis playing under the moonlight presented no problem, as there was plenty of it. Be- tween trying to move the gym wall, suicides and fast break 69 drills, our favorite was scanning the floor for contact lenses. This is a team enthusiastically work- ing its way to the top; with a few minor obstacles (Breen, Nagor- ski, Toby, Stix, Goon . . . ). We entered the state finals seed- ed 1. We got half way to the top --not bad for our small school. All in all, this season will be remembered as the most excit- ing ever. Records are often mislead- ing. They fail to show the misfortunes that a team has to suffer through: sickness, injuries, inexperience. We ' ve had our share of mis- fortunes, but we ' ve known the thrill of good perform- ances, too- our precious wins and the upset ties against Newburyport and Hamilton-Wenham. What we have attained we have worked hard for, and Junior Varsity Ice Hockey Varsity Boys Basketball W-13 L-5 State Tournament Semi-Finalists 74 The Ipswich High School Varsity Basketball Team was one of the most successful Basket- ball teams in recent years, finishing second in the Eastern Division in the Cape Ann Lea- gue. The team also qualified for a position in the post-season Tournament for Division 3. Throughout the year we were led by Ted Flaherty, our captain and high scorer. He started at forward position. We had two other Junior Varsity Basketball W-16 L-l 75 seniors starting, center Scott Robie and forward Jim Holten. The rest of the starting team was made up of juniors Brian Phaneuf and Harry Lampropoulos. On the whole we had a great season with a lot of fun and excitement for our GREAT Coach David Whipple.
