•% ' Tiger— 1973 Ipswich, Massachusetts AM curing our iitetime, there has been war. This was has wrought destruction within our nation and touched the peoples of many other nations. It has violated the morals and conscience of some, and crippled or killed countless others. Now, as we leave the security of our schopi days and enter a world to which we are yet strangers, we enter a world of peace, a world that must reconstruct and re-evaluate the shattered ideals of its people. The first and most important phase of our lives has come to ah end and with it, the suffering and anguish of a war. Therefore, we the Class of 1973, as a memorial to those who have suffered in this war, dedicate this book to the year 1973. the year that peace came, to the men who gave their lives to make this end possible, especially those from Ipswich; Paul F. Doyon, John Mattarocchia, Robert E. Dudek, and William Gresch, to those who did return but will carry the scars of battle with them as long as they live, the P.O.W.’s, who have lost precious years of their lives to suffering and confinement far from their homes, to those who suffered for their ide- als, which could not condone a war, and to untold hundreds, whose stories will never be complete. We dedicate this book with the hope that the world of our children will also be a world of peace. . . Teenagers are subject to a far wider range of influences outside the class- room — influences from their own peer culture, as well as from the adult culture transmitted by parents and the mass media. D. Riesman 6 Adolescence is the period during which a young person learns who he is, and how he really feels. It is the time during which he dif- ferentiates himself from his culture, though on culture’s terms. E. Friedenberg 8 All Religion, all life, all art, all expression come down to this: to the effort of the human soul to break its barrier of loneliness, of intolerable loneliness, and make some contact with another seek- ing soul. (Marquis) 12 The question was put to him, what hope is, and his answer was “the dream of a waking man”. (Laertius) If only all the hands that reach could teach. M This wo In eve! I’m nineteen years old and at this age it is easy to learn innumer- able experiences in this grand colossus of North America, the United States. To be an AFS student is a wonderful thing. I have the opportunity to know other towns, other people, and other ways of living. I couldn’t forget the nice Ipswich High, its stu- dents, its very nice girls, and its untiring teach- ers, that never stop in the teaching of the young people. The teachers are like the trees, the older they are, the more they sink their roots in the earth. Thank you Ipswich High for the beautiful ideas that you gave to me. As you people can see, I consider myself another very happy tiger, an d this is a good reason and honor for wishing all the improve- ments for the high school. GO TIGERS! As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. i If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. 121 Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfoldingas it should. Therefore be at peace with God whatever you conceive him to be. and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. Be ca reful. Strive to be happy.
