TIGER 1970 Editor’s Letter In this, the 1970 Tiger yearbook, my staff and I have striven to show the unity within our class as we grew from bewildered freshmen to aspiring seniors. Al- though there were times during the last four years when we stumbled and occa- sionally even failed, we were able to pick each other up again in our attempt to achieve success. To quote Dickens: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. As editor-in-chief I wish to thank our advisor, Mr. William Laakso, our excel- lent staff, and everyone else who made the publication of Tiger 1970 possible. Maire entered our class in her Senior year. 57 Through the A.F.S. program I had the opportunity to spend a year in Ipswich. Having lived now in two countries I learned that it is impossible to look superficially at any culture. The image of America seems to be an ever changing one. Switzerland and the U.S. are not anymore absolutely gorgeous countries. However, I experienced a wonderful way of interna- tional contacts. I found that some people in other countries feel and think the same way 1 do. I would like to thank all the young (and older) Americans I have met and who have helped to shape all my adventures here in Ipswich during this year. 58 59 The American Field Service, ever since it came to Ipswich has provided us with a better understanding of peoples from other nations. This year it continued the tradition of sponsoring Margrit Durrer to Ipswich High School from Switzerland. Again we have had the enjoyment and pleasure of exchanging our culture and ideas with our foreign friend. She has also adopted some of our habits (whether they may be good or bad!) which, in turn, has given her an understanding of our country. From this exchanging of knowledge we may all enjoy, as well as learn, the significance of international understanding made possible by the American Field Service. 60 61 SENIOR A CTIVITIES With all beings and all things we shall be as relatives. Sioux Indian Barry Hopping, President Steering Committee 63 CLASS HISTORY All things and most people change with time, and the Class of 1970 is no exception. We ' ve changed a great deal during our four years at Ipswich High School. In 1966, we walked through the doors of Ipswich High School as freshmen. Dave Bialek, Carla Dragoni, Andrea Fry- drych, and Steve Tobiasz were our class officers; Nancy Nylen, Patty Jodoin, Paul Messelaar, Kathy Sullivan, and Dave Bialek served as our representatives on the Student Council. There was, of course, a freshman dance. Summer In The City may not have been the year ' s most profitable event, but the decorations . . . (especially the Borrowed street signs) . . . were certainly the most ambi- tious. Nevertheless, we not only broke even, but made more profit than any freshman class before us. Our slave auction was scary, embarrassing, funny and totally worthwhile. The boys came running to the shrieks of plastic whistles. They wore leashes, shower caps, makeup, and dresses. It seemed that the admiring upperclassmen had more pity for the girls. Through the year, our class spirit grew. Crane ' s Beach Picnic was marked by the great Battle of the Classes. Our first class flag was soon captured by marauding upperclassmen, but several makeshift banners fol- lowed. The freshman defense was energetic, even though many were dragged through the sand and nearly drowned. Thinking back the water was not very warm that day ... as it never seemed to be on beach picnic days. Then summer passed and we were sophomores with Dave Bialek, Barry Hopping, Andrea Frydrych, and Steve Tobiasz 64 as our class leaders. Nancy Nylen, Patty Jodoin, Paul Messelaar, Eve Israelsohn, and Dave Bialek were Student Council representatives. This was a year of spirit; dozens of sophomore girls practiced diligently for cheering tryouts. Stephanie Rogers, Kathy Sullivan, Chris Callahan, Paula Nicholson, Patty Jodoin and Melodi Hammett were chosen. A mock political election, held in the school, involved many of the class. En- thusiastic and dedicated campaigns resulted in very successful convention and ballotting. Then came our junior year and half of our high school days were over. The arrival of class rings made it official, we were upperclassmen — finally. Class officers were Barry Hopping, Carla Dragoni, Ginny Haserlat and Steve To- biasz; Nancy Nylen, Eve Israelsohn, Peggy Lezon, Patty Jo- doin and Barry Hopping were class members on the Student Council. A steering committee was also elected, and the year began. This was the legendary Year of the Tiger . The I.H.S. var- sity football team battled its way to victory after victory, tak- ing the state Class D championship and the Cape Ann League championship. The varsity basketball team also took the Class D title, after carrying on the Tiger winning streak in the Tech Tourney. These games in Boston Garden were certainly exciting! The Christmas Cotillion, attended by both juniors and se- niors, was one of the most elaborate social events of the season. The junior dance, Kaleidoscope , was well attended and profitable. But, as spring arrived, most of the class looked for- ward to the Junior Prom, our first formal dance. The setting was Crane ' s Castle and the theme, Younger than Spring- 65 time . Queen of the prom was Carla Dragoni and her court; Marie Cook, Jean Courage, Jean Wright, and Kathy Sullivan. The year closed, and summer went past. Crane ' s Beach and Town Hill were the most popular meet- ing places. Everyone had a favorite spot to do their thing . Finally, we were seniors. Barry Hopping, Carla Dragoni, Andrea Frydrych and Steve Tobiasz were our class officers; Nancy Nylen was Student Coun- cil President, with Eve Israelsohn, Patty Jodoin, Wendy Whiston, and Barry Hopping serving with her. A steering committee was elected. Their function now became more important, for graduation was not far. Margrit Durrer, our exchange student from Switzerland, was a welcomed addition to the class. Involved in many things, she soon fit into the town and school. The fall of our senior year was very busy. The Student Council accomplished more in one year than seemed possible After innumerable past attempts at changing the dress code our class finally succeeded. The dress code was abolished, leaving clean, safe and decent as the motto. And senior year was a year of conflict, too. Politics, the war moratorium, and national events involved us all. We found that people don ' t always agree with others, but yet have a right not to. We became individuals, taking opposi- tion or aligning ourselves to the issues. It was during this year that we discovered, along with parents, teachers, and townspeople, that the process of learning sometimes involves the use of irregu- lar or unusual material. But, with this learning process it becomes inevitable that 66 we experience not just the world inside our classroom, but outside as well. We had a senior Victory dance and a Christmas party, and a Cotillion. All were fun and equally successful. The Ipswich Tigers, led by Carl Mattarochia, had a great season, taking the state Class D championship and tying for the Cape Ann first place. Basket- ball, Hockey, and Wrestling were doing just as well. We have all been changed and molded by these past four years. We have learned to love or to hate; to be hypocritical or to be honest; to love justice or to fear it. Our school has taught us something more than names and dates, it has taught us to live.
