0 % IN DEDICATION TO BRADFORD LUCAS In appreciation for his patient guidance, for his inspiration, for his loyal friendship; and with honor for his devotion to Ipswich High School and its students, for his intellectual awareness, we, the Class of 1969, with the greatest pleasure and respect, dedicate this edition of the TIGER to Mr. Bradford Lucas. 4 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace . . Voll. 2 49 OUR FOREIGN FRIEND KLARA SUETENS As an answer to the question “What is an American?”, so many people in Europe tend to stereotype, only judging by what they happen to read, hear or see in the movies. I was tired of that. The opportimity to visit America came with that wonderful program which is A.F.S. When I think of an American now, as I observe him in Ipswich, I think of the constant, active outgoing type who is very free and has along with a great personality, a practical intelligence, a warm hospitality, a work together spirit and, sometimes for me, amazing frankness. I also think of his flowered or colorful stripe shirts, his funny looking bermudas and his nonchalance in whatever he does. Other things which remind me of him are; hot dogs, hamburgers, cokes, snow, wooden houses and Crane’s Beach. Taking all these things into consideration you get a quite interesting and charming people. A.F.S. is a wonderful program which is unfortunately not very well known about in Belgium and practically neglected in Tineneu, my hometown. I intend to begin an A.F.S. club in my High School because I want more Belgians to get this imique opportunity to spend a year in America, getting to know its way of life by staying with a family and by going to the High School. A.F.S. does not only give you a chance to meet Americans, but during some special weekends I have had the opportimity to meet lots of people from all over the world. It is really hopeful to see real unity and harmony. It makes me able to believe that even with differences in country, language and tradition, people are basically the same. Ipswich is a great place to be and it has a very well organized A.F.S. Chapter. I love being here. Thank you so much, and if you get a chance come and visit me. Klara Suetens 50 51 Vice Pres. Hear ye! Hear ye! All persons wishing to hear the Ipswich of 1969, draw near, give your attendance, and it shall be revealed. Let us begin with the fall of 1965, when we, the class of 1969, entered Ipswich High School as freshmen. To lead us through this first confusing year we chose Louise Mackey as president, Sandra Van Buskirk as vice-president, Donna Sylvester as secretary, and Susan Krupanski as treasurer. Representing us in the Student Council were Chip Nylen, Arthur Markos, Barbara Hetnar, and Phyllis Gallant. In March, our class displayed a tremendous group effort in planning for our freshman dance at Ipswich High. The cafeteria was mystically lit with pink and blue lights. Glittering silver letters revealing our theme — “A-Go-Go” — were strategically positioned above the stage. Hence, our first project as a class proved to be successful. But more success was to come. Eagerly awaited by the upperclassmen was our slave auction. The luckier (or should we say braver?) freshman class members were raffled off at lunch and left to the merciless sub- jection of their masters. Looking back on our freshman year, we recall a number of memorable experiences. Freshman Biology will never be forgotten — especiallv our collecting, categorizing, and labeling one hundred BUGS (rather AR- THROPODS) for our beloved biology teacher Mr. Dort. And always in our hearts we shall remember Mr. Tommy Lucas, who tried to convince us that the South had won the Givil War! And who could ever forget “plugging in” to the way-out m sounds of Gerry Thibodeau and his master console. High School history of the Glass Our first year at Ipswich High School was soon at an end. A long-desired summer vacation quickly passed, and we returned to school in the fall of 1966 as older and, hopefully, more mature individuals. We were no longer the “babies” of the school — we were now “grown-up” sophomores. President Arthur Markos was elected to lead us during our sophomore year, with the assistance of Vice- President Gary Drown, Secretary Sandra Van Buskirk, and Treasurer Louise Mackey. Delegates to the Stu- dent Goimcil were Ghip Nylen, Barbara Hetnar, Phyllis Gallant, Mary Jane Gibelh, and Larry Markos. 82 The fall of 1966 was marked by the fad of long hair — not for girls, but for BOYS! The faculty didn’t especially care for our innovation in haircuts. One particular male teacher preferred tradition (as revealed by his coming to school with nothing but a thick layer of stubble for hair.) Mr. Bob Bennett and his slide rule, Miss Brown and her typewriter, Mr. Lang and his pipe — all are insignificant sights but unforgettable. The girls of Ipswich High School were accustomed to walking into the smoky air of the Girls’ Room. The teachers did their best to smother the flames; but, much to their dismay, the smoke still remains today. Long practice was rewarded when cheering competition saw a number of sophomore girls named to positions on the two squads. Linda Kingman, Ann Lezon, Carolyn Carr, Ann Markos, Joyce Wright, and Debbie Girard were among these spirited few who were chosen for cheerleaders that fall. Before we realized it, the first half of our high school lives had passed, and we suddenly found ourselves as upperclassmen. Officers elected to guide us through our junior year were Arthur Markos, president; Jane McKay, vice-president; Sandra Van Buskirk, secretary; and Louise Mackey, treasurer. Student Coimcil representatives were Chip Nylen, Barbara Hetnar, Helen Oldfield, and John Sullivan. 83 In October of that year, the long-awaited class rings arrived. For some unknown reason, acjuainarine proved to be the overwhelmingly favorite color choice with the boys. Constant rivalry existed between Miss Man er’s Homeroom 327 and Mr. Holmes’ Homeroom 328 during our junior year. Some .sav that “327 ” proved to be the better because of its expression of love and appreciation to its “coach, ” Miss Manzer, bv wav of a gift of ro.ses to her. But “328 refused to be outdone and pre.sented the class flag to their beloved Terry Holmes. Mini-skirts, although officially banned from the .school’s code of dre.ss, became a popular fashion with the girls — and the bovs didn’t mind, either! The junior steering committee was elected to guide our class at this time. 84 The spring brought the selection of Arthur Markos, Chip Nylen, and alternate John Sullivan to Boys’ State. Diantha Wade and alternate Louise Mackey were chosen as delegates to Girls’ State. The entire school displayed an enormous amount of spirit in the mock presidential election, but the juniors proved to be most influential when Chip Nylen, as .stand in for Gene McCarthy, was elected President. Springtime .soon dawned upon us, along with the thoughts of our Junior Prom. We cho.se Crane’s Castle as the location, naming “Of Time and the Sea” as our theme. Valeri Trocki was elegantly crowned Queen of The Prom, and the rainy weather helped to make the evening a memorable one. 85 Toward the end of our junior year, many of our outstanding classmates were honored for their achievements. Wayne Nicholson, Joan Yurewicz and Debbie Johnson were given wristwatches for their respective courses. Eight juniors were inducted into The National Honor Society; they were Ralph Fitzgerald, Ron Saxon, Joanne Adamowicz, Jane McKay, Louise Mackey, Joan Yurewicz, Bonnie Plotner and Debbie Johnson. This same assembly saw The Harvard Book Award go to Bill Hickling. The D.A.R. Awards for excellence in History were presented to Bill Hickling and Helen Oldfield. The annual Crane’s Beach Picnic was especially memorable as rival clas.ses vied for one another’s section-marker flags. The junior girls demonstrated true class loyalty as they marched bare-foot through the “forests” of Castle Hill, searching for some sort of flagpole. They returned victorious, hauling a huge, 20-foot tree trunk back to the beach. The beach was frequently visited during the summer months by almost all of the seniors to be. In the fall of 1968, we began what would be our last year at Ipswich High. We were finally seniors. We were led by the same group of class officers, Helen Oldfield, Barbara Hetnar, Carolyn Carr, and Chip Nylen served us in the capacity of senior class delegates to the Student Council, with Chip acting as President of the Council. Klara Suetens, our exchange student from Belgium was a welcomed addition to our cla.ss. Her ability in art proved extremely helpful in various decorations and artwork. Several of our boys played varsity football and aided the team led by captain Dave Doyon to its title of Massachusetts State Class-D Champions. We were also very proud of our wrestling team and its fine record, led by captain Bill Wallace. 86 With Christmas approaching, plans were being made for the Christmas Party and Cotillion. The party was highlighted by the opening of a few unique gifts which will be long remembered. Tigers fans staunchly cheered our Ipswich High basketball team. Captain Danny Alexson led our players to many victories. With the rank of senior came the traditional privileges. We were finally able to cut in to the lunch line — legally. Exerting an all-out effort on our behalf were our advisors: Miss Fournier, Mr. Hayes, and Mr. McKenzie. Also there to guide our class was our newly-elected steering committee. Under the direction of Mr. Brad Lucas, many seniors busily worked on THE INSECT PLAY. Costumes for its performance presented a challenge to those who worked on this committee. Mrs. Kraemer’s Homeroom 317 became a haven for wanderers whenever Mr. McKenzie made an unexpected “visit” to the third wing. Of these incidents our student history has been made — much fun and much work, pleasant surprises and some disappointments. To paraphrase a poet: “A purposeful and yet a wiser class we go on to our respective endeavors.” Debbie Johnson 87 88 ACTIVITIES CHORUS CUB STAFF OCTET 90 LANGUAGE CLUB STUDENT LEADERS MATH LEAGUE 91 A.F.S. 92 93 JUNIOR STEERING COMMITTEE ERESHMEN STEERING COMMITTEE SOPHOMORE STEERING COMMITTEE 94 SENIOR CHEERLEADERS Debbie Girard Carolyn Carr Ann Lezon Linda Kingman CO-CAPTAINS Joyce Wright Anne Markos 95 96 SENIOR STEERING COMMITTEE V.
