Superintendent’s Letter It is always a pleasure and an honor to address a graduating class through the medium of their year book. For the class of 1968 I venture the theme “taking stock.” Where have you been? Who has done it for you? How do you respond? ‘Stock taking’ is partly financial and partly informational. The information seg- ment is the guide to future actions. Financially your community and your parents have paid school tuition of $6000 to $8500 over 12 years at today’s costs for you to attend modern schools, staffed by professional teachers and served by fine people who live in your community and whose children go to school with you. According to the distance from your home to your school, you were transported by bus. You could choose a nutritionally balanced school lunch or one from home as you preferred. By world standards you were and are well clothed, well fed, and per- haps indulged. Did you grow up in a youth centered community? Were you pro- vided opportunities in Boy and Girl Scouting, Little and Pony Leagues, summer and winter recreational programs? Have you thought how your police, your town fathers, and your teachers tried to understand that ‘growing up’ is a big job? How many of you have thought or remembered that your classmates who were sick or handicapped in almost any way were tutored or aided toward their goal by the community as represented by its churches, private groups, the schools or an agency of the town? Now at graduation time the expectation! What is it? The hope is that each one of you will slowly as you are able assume the responsibilities that others have borne for you. This is the beginning, the ‘Commencement’ of do it yourself; I hope not just for yourself as an individual, but doing something for others. This ancient idea expressed either religiously or secularly may be what the Class of 1968 and all American youth want to believe and act upon. 6
